I didn’t think the plot was that complicated either but I think a lot of Cdrama viewers are used to much slower pacing. Understanding character motivations seemed more difficult because the cuts ruined the context tho. All in all though I think the story gave a reasonable explanation for why the main couple get together and since they’re biggest draw, I’m satisfied.
The main leads chemistry is really good. I was skeptical at first but the trailers sent me straight into the pit and I haven’t looked back. Acting ability really makes all the difference and this combined with the quality of their relationship makes this my No.1 pairing. I can’t stop rewatching them and hope we can get all the cut scenes especially the ones in the opening.
I’m not sure the about age difference either but I guess it’s because most people don’t seem to know the FML’s real age and think she’s really young. She also often stars with much younger costars. FSF is one of the few MLs she’s played against that is older than her. Yan Yikuan was the other I think but that show never aired. In the show she’s most famous for, a lot of people thought her co-star was older but in fact he was like 6 years younger.

The FL is 32 in real life. There’s only like around ten years age difference. Plus the character the ML plays is set to be in his 40s/50s so the casting is correct on his end.

It’s really an insult to him with how little of his scenes they included.

A’Rui is the only person who is kind to Bai Lu in Yebei. It make sense that she’s attached to A’Rui especially since A’Rui saved her from being burned at the stake when they were children. There’s also the element of if she saves A’Rui from death, she can love Yu Xiuming guilt free.
Yi Wuyou is hard to tell because most of his story has been cut. However, he was going to try to overthrow Yu Xiuming no matter what. Yezi was only one of his motivators. In the original story, he wasn’t even in love her but rather A’Rui.
The major theme of this drama is about obsession and letting go. Yezi’s journey was learning to live her own life rather than in the shadow of A’Rui. Yi Wuyou was letting go of revenge for his tribe/ Yezi for the sake of peace but he failed. Yu Xiuming was the obsession with invincibility /immortality but he gave it up.
Yezi at the start of the story is 19. The story happens over at least a year or more so she’s in her 20s when she marries Yu Xiuming. In real life the actress was 30 when the show was filmed, she just looks a little bit young.

I didn’t feel like it was very toxic. Yu Xiuming is pretty reasonable so he’s not hotheaded and Yi Wuyou seems way too gentle with Yezi for an extreme response… he’s actually a pushover for her. However, a lot has been cut. It’s possible the original version was more intense though just from attitude at the end.

Most it has to do with the author of book the show is based on being cancelled last year for comments he made. That implicated the show. Lots of netizens were threatening to boycott/ asking for the show not to air as a result until the show said it cut ties with the author. After that the show basically went dead until the end of November this year.
All Cdramas have to undergo a censorship review before they can be broadcast. Sometimes in order get the permission, shows will cut scenes with content that won’t pass the review. In SJFY’s case it cut 11 episodes, bringing the show from 36 episodes to 25. Most fans theorise the cuts are due to the author and
that while the show touched on sensitive matters, the review was ruthless because of the author. Plus the reviews have been getting tougher. Shows that aired a couple of years ago might not make the review now.
Most Chinese fans accepted the cuts initially because usually shows in this situation get buried and never air. But then there were cuts that didn’t make sense.
Most of the anger at the show on Weibo is about the show being cut in a way that doesn’t accurately capture the actors skills, doesn’t make sense, and focuses way too much on the secondary couple.

The more I think about the cuts, the angrier I become. Yu Wuyou’s death was so emotional. But what did we get?
When he dies, he dies looking at Yezi. As in until the end, he loves her so much that he can’t bear to close his eyes/ take his eyes off her even when dying. Hands shaking, Yezi then closes his eyes when she realises he’s died. That’s why there’s a closeup of her hand on his face during the scene. Then Yezi cradles Yi Wuyou’s head and sobs. It’s such a powerful and good scene.
