In this drama, Lu Di kept them in cages becos there's so many cats and since he does not stay there, he might be worried the cats would fight or hurt themselves when he isn't there. The cages are kept clean and look well maintained. And he lets the cats out when he is there, so they get some exercise too.

I didn't read the novel but read a sypnosis that says the dead Wang Meng Meng created the time loop in an attempt to save her parents and the bus passengers from death. That she is trying to save her parents' souls from hell and hope they don't die in vain. The reason why she chose Li Shi Qing is becos she looks like her and so she thought Shi Qing is the most likely among the passengers to stop her parents. But such a reason would not pass China censorship that don't approve of such afterlife plot.... So we don't know what is the explanation they would use in drama. Virtual reality game is highly possible as the ML character was not a game developer in novel.
For people desperate to watch the latest eps but Eng subs are not yet ready, there is a way... Reset actually does not have that much dialogues, and this is contemporary setting so the Chinese isn't too difficult. Best is, no idiom has been used, which is usually tricky to translate. Well, you can use Google Translate mobile app Camera feature to translate the Chinese subs into English or any language of your choice. So, you watch drama at PC or tablet screen and put your mobile over the the Chinese subs, use Camera feature and you can see the Eng subs at your mobile. Do not need to pause the video, Google translate works quite fast and can provide the translation in real time. Of course this kind of machine translation subs would not be that accurate but acting in Reset is soo gooood, you just need to know the main points of what is said and can deduced actual meaning from the actors' faces.... PS: there's audio translation feature too, but I've never try that. You can try that too and see which works better.

I might get 'hate' for this comment... But I actually have fun watching the Older Hou wooing Qian Qian... Thought I won't like it, their characters' age difference of 29 yrs is a big put-off, but these 2 are really good actors. And watching the Older Hou act cute is surprisingly not "oily", he pulled it off pretty well. For me, as long as the actors pull off a convincing act and actually has on-screen chemistry, I'm okay...
