Maybe we’ll get to see her dress him the morning after their first night??
This videos reminds me of a potential reason why San fell in love with Doek-Im. Yes, she talked to him normally and bluntly with ideals that almost match his own about the lower classes but she’s also witnessed a couple of his weakest moments with no judgement, she was just there by his side. Stark contrast to Hwabin’s first comment about Doek-Ro’s death which is ironic because Hwabin’s reaction about Doek-Ro’s death was just like Doek-Ro’s unsympathetic reaction regarding the dead traitor guardsman’s son.
While kings usually are free to have as many concubines as they want, they usually don't love those concubines.…
🤣 yeah…I haven’t watched Jang Ok Jung but know of her through Dong-Yi (Jewel in the Crown). Both the main characters are in that one too. Kdrama harems are not as crazy as Cdrama harems.
Reminder: their special DJ gig starts in an hour and a half, and it'll stream live here: https://youtu.be/nVehLrQZglw
Can’t wait! Watching their presscon interview while I wait and just caught the question for Seyoung’s most memorable line…recording the breathing (according to Junho urgent breathing 🔥). We all know which scene that was 🤣
Yeap. She was first 5th Rank Sangui, a concubine but not part of the Royal family. Then promoted to 3rd Rank So-yong,…
Lol…they could get to that rank without sleeping with the King…but it would take like 35 years. It gets confusing since they have the same title Ranks as a 5th Rank concubine. It’s probably why they’re not officially part of the Royal Family. 5th Rank Court Ladies are head of their departments and the highest rank a regular Court Lady could be, I.e. Court Lady Seo, Head Court Lady Jo.
Yeap, concubine ranking depends on family background and if they were directly appointed from noble families or a favored CL. Also if they gave the King children. It’s political and sometimes depends on the mood of the King.
i guess it's because i watched too many sageuks already?? im the opposite. i really appreciate how he has such…
Yeap, it was King Hyeonjong with Queen Myeonseong, parents of King Sukjong. The Queen was able to bear him like 5 children. And she had a fierce personality so people thought that’s probably why the King didn’t have concubines. The Queen usually has to accept the concubines for them to be recognized. Most cases they’re guilted/trained to accept them for filial piety and to be virtuous.

Remember that CL’s belong to the King. They start at the lower ranks and promote over the years to 5th Rank Court Lady (highest rank of Court Ladies, what Doek-Im aspired to be). If favored by the King (he sleeps with them), they can get elevated to 5th Rank Favored Sangang or Sangui automatically, officially a concubine but not a Royal Consort and not considered part of the Royal Family. It’s similar in the Chinese Imperial Harem (except their palace maids don’t belong to the Emperor and will get married off). Royal Consorts start at 4th Rank. They don’t have to bear a son to become a Royal Consort, but won’t get promoted to 1st Rank Bin rank until bearing a son. Bin is almost similar to Imperial Noble Consort of Imperial China where they’re second to the Queen as wives but still below the other Royal family members.

That’s why I’m glad they did the extra episode and the extended length in these last 4. Plus two episodes of them together. Most other dramas give you like 10-20 minutes at the end if we’re lucky.
https://youtu.be/dvZNB4xnEJ0 Waiting for the translation of this video but it looks like an analysis of the Queen Dowager’s reward to Doek-Im and a comparison with Head Court Lady Jo’s gift of expensive tassel.
Is this heading towards sad ending for the couple?
Happy part: In both the novel and history, San and Doek-Im were married and had about 4-5 years together. They had 2 children who survived birth.
Sad part: the children died young. Doek-Im passed away months after their son while she was 10 months pregnant with their 3rd child.
Bittersweet because they had their happy times and loved each other before the losses. He wrote of his love on her epitaph and continued to love her till his death 10 years later. In the novel, the author ended with San meeting with Doek-Im in the afterlife. We’re all hoping that they end the drama with our two leads meeting in the afterlife.

Neither have I. Most of the historical kdramas I’ve watched, harem politics isn’t the focus. I think Dong-Yi had the most harem politics that I’ve watched of sageuks. I’ve watched a couple of cdramas that were not palace dramas but were slice-of-life dramas and the FL were daughters of concubines that married as main wives of a noble family. Those did a decent job with it.
