Guess there’s our answer with Doek-Ro. The Queen Dowager was the one who actually selected his sister as Jeongjo’s concubine. Some believe that Doek-Ro made sure his sister knew the answers to the Queen Dowagers questions. 😒 I just hope that if they do make her a concubine, there’s a year time jump to Wonbin’s death…not hating on her but it’ll keep pace with the episodes left.

They’ve subverted a lot of drama tropes. You’ll see in ep2.

In the stills I saw on YouTube< did Doek-Ro’s sister become a Court Lady…didn’t see anyone in a concubine outfit.

The drama may be taking creative liberties with the whole time line because based on history Noble Consort Won became concubine 2 yrs after he took the throne in 1778 (became King in 1776). Then a year later she died and a year after that, Noble Consort Hwa was given to him as concubine. It was after this that he approached her a second time. She finally became his official concubine 6 years after becoming King. This is not to say that they didn’t already start a romantic relationship without her having an official title as the novel hints since he can technically do that. Plus she gave birth in Oct of the same year she became his official concubine (just lower rank than others until the prince was born). That’s the part where I loved how Doek-Im puts herself first in the drama. Unlike the daughters of nobility, she wouldn’t be automatically a Noble Consort when she accepts him; she’ started off as a 5th rank concubine, then third rank the month before birthing her son, then 1st rank Bin. The others went straight to the most senior rank Bin.

In ep 7, it was image through the mirror?

I don’t think they’ll go into that detail since this is about Doek-Im/San relationship and not a drama specifically about Yi-San. They’ll probably do a time skip or stop with Doek-Im.

In the old version, they just showed his death by doing a time skip to his second son being King very young. Didn’t show the next concubine and all that.

I’m hoping it might be a surprise cameo? Don’t think it was well publicized about who was going to play Doek-Im’s brother until closer to his appearance. Doek-Im needs a Royal to be on her side with Doek-Ro being against her.

A lot of it stems from his poverty in childhood and how their extended family treated them. Being CP’s playmate and confidante was what allowed him to stand on his own in the Hong clan. Think you can see it in his expressions when he met with the State Counselor in secret in like ep3 or something. CP was basically his lifeline?

One of the court ladies works at the Crown Princess’s palace so she’s mentioned just not characterized so far in the drama. If they bring her in, it would probably be as a cameo for the coronation and acceptance of Doek-Im as a concubine as they had a close relationship.

He had two others with a new concubine because his children and Doek-Im passed away. He had to have an heir so had no choice but to take another concubine. Although fond of the new concubine like the Queen, his live was always with Doek-Im and he still kept going to Doek-Im’s palace and used it as a study of sorts. I also read that he habitually visited Doek-Im and their son’s grave until his next son was born. He only stopped out of respect for the new crown prince.

It was a ghost pregnancy because she wanted to get pregnant so badly to secure her position and the favor of the royals. They said she never gave birth similar to the Queen. Apparently from what I read, she was the only one who ever got jealous and tried a couple of things against the Queen.

I’ve heard of ghost pregnancies where the person goes through everything as if she was pregnant and in the end, there’s no baby…a mental thing because they want it so bad but who knows, court life was full of threats.

I agree, I didn’t think it was a filler. It’s actually given a direct answer to Doek-IM’s thoughts and also closing out the whole tattoo thing. It’s also leading to the start of the closure on the YeongJo/Sado thing. I haven’t felt like any of the episodes have been fillers but I’m into looking for all the little nuances in these types of dramas.

I watched a little bit of the old Yi-San drama and I much prefer the current events of how they’re portraying things. I wouldn’t mind his wife showing up cause that’s no secret. In the old version, they changed the sequence of Uibin Seong and Hwabin (the second concubine) and tried to throw in a little harem drama between them, even having them pregnant and giving birth at same time (though IRL, that didn’t happen cause Hwabin was pregnant but never gave birth before Doek-Im accepted Jeongjo’s favor).

I think this drama has the best balance between fleshing out all the characters involved but still maintaining the central plot and so far there’s good allocation of timing to tying together all the antagonists and protagonists. Whether we get scenes of the main leads together or separate, they are still very much the central point of the drama. Can’t wait for next episode to hopefully close out the old regime and start the new one. Then we can really see some movement with SanDoek and removing the baddies.

I love the symbolism in Doek-Im’s river scenes. The first time in ep7, she sent the little boat away with her feelings but this time, she didn’t because she’s accepted her feelings.

IRL, from what I read he didn’t take another concubine after her until he had no choice cause Uibin Seong and all their children were gone 😭 Even though he had a wife and another concubine before her, he rarely ‘visited” them except for the required scheduled baby making time. Wife and Doek-Im were close.

Ugh…Doek-Ro is an a**….the way he talks to Doek-Im. He’s literally trying anything now cause he knows he’s only worth something and can only be a part of the court if CP survives to become King. He knows CP’s personality but will defy his orders as long as they can maintain power.
