Like many of her dialogues, this one rubbed me the wrong way too, but I chose to ignore it because I was tired…
tired,
It's not about gender we already said it. It about story. ML or FL I don't care. I will watch how the story unfold, so yes even a man in this situation who will say this after 30eps with a good storytelling is also acceptable.
Story matter, not gender.

It's more accurate to see this character saying such things here than in Legend of female general for example, and I do agree with you on the low effort about her character in this drama while in this one, I can't agree with you. . Some will of course call that a trend, but for people like me who have read rare books of history of women in China, I call that "finally they are awake when writing". Not all women are the same, so why we shall always have the same typical women on screen ? And if something new arise, already labelled it by selfish and whatever... maybe there is a mechanical process ( education or societal) people need to understand before jumping to labels.
It's not being fan or her or not ( on my side at least), it's just being cultivate about woman and the way people ( men and women) easily erase them under " selfish" behavior label, "it just again a strong FL pretention" while we get the chance to see another kind of representation more bold, more accurate with many women doing thing in order to survive, to get what they want and just be more audacious on screen. Seeing people having no critical thinking about this matter ( whatever the drama is) is exhausting.

It's to cater to the fantasies of most female viewers. Apparently, mistreating the ml is romantic. I'm currently…
True I was about to respond the same thing. Yeah and they respond to each other accordingly. The start of the drama is pretty good to catch attention on their relationship. It is not mistreatment, it is brutal encounter and again it is fictive. But it's better than in Shadow Love, (while I do like the drama) in Fated Hearts there was no scene of "almost r*pe the great female general". They are both animate by harsh emotions and balanced desire of equivalent force. I don't want to watch a drama about generals that just take tea watching each other in the eyes and wait dying by who poison the other one first x) Better watching equivalent power boucing towards each other equally.
There is no "gender" at the beginning of the story, except in the eyes of us, viewers. That make the story more accurate.
And by the way the filming of the beginning was pretty great.
I wonder if people do watch drama carefully 🤔

I think the character is supposed to be a buffoon, someone clearly not qualified to be Crown Prince.
I think he played well that fact.

Dragon probably just appeared. He’s a spirit companion so not someone JBZ would randomly find in a wild.
It pleasant to imagine he was here to help him relieve the pain and anger. It's coherent with the way he always behave, so protective. Truly meaning of the companion.

If the drama is built upon a world where men are belittled and perceived as something that can be owned, No. It’s…
You're pretty narrow-minded and harsh in your words... I think if this drama have been praised by so many people here with various preference, it isn't because ML "bark like dogs" and "selfish FL" ....
Which woman dare think for herself ? That so scandalous... >< ( I'm sarcastic here, just in case )
If a story touch thousands people around the world, it is because people can relate to the value carried by characters. It doesn't touch you, that's fine, but missing the main point of the story and exposing it here proove that those stories are still needed, still kind of wanted. Why ?
Good acting, good balance between men and woman story, burden pasts, ideal and opportunites. It is that hard to imagine a good story where a man can understand the wish of freedom of the one he love ? Yeah we don't live in a world where woman have to sacrifice themselves to prove they can love, stay silent in the house dreaming of love while ml go to god knows where because he is the true hero of the story, well men aren't the only main character. It is what you call selfish ? What do you think she shall have answered ? "thank you for your twisted love, thank you to have forced me to drink a drug with unknow origin i shall be devoted to you now and forget my life objective. Yeah sure. let's be wed !"
That's good it isn't what she has said.
It is not a "trend", it things finally returning into their rightful place.
Your ignorance proove the writer did the right thing. You clearly need to see it by yourself. I saw evolution of female representation and male representation in drama character since 2005. Both evolve toward a better understanding of their exposure time, emotional complexity, and a better depiction of humanity in each other.
Sometimes it still stammering but they try.

And if you watch carefully the drama, what you said isn't right.
She did tell it in many other way than words. This sentence was the apotheosis of her way to free herself from other deciding for her what kind of life she deserve. ( a brother who think she shall be dead, a mom who doesn't love her, a man who force her to drink something out of her consent, people who think of her only as a weapon....) The romance between the leads isn't the only main point of the story, it is also what we call family. If we note, she is devoted towards "the family" who is truly here for her, even Buxiu noted it, why to you miss that point ?
She choose to fight to save herself alone by approching the male lead without shame to find the cure. She choose herself. Each time she could have told the truth, she choose herself and stay silent. She has learn to choose herself in order to survive. Saying those words out loud make sense here, because she always did that. Maybe it is selfish for you, but in world where a man force his way to you and forget your freedom, well responding with such words appear selfish to you ? I note that you say nothing about the way SL forced her to drink something against her will. One side judgement isn't good. It was very satisfying to hear her say it loudly, clearly. Even after he hear her saying those words, SL still put Ml in the conversation, pretending that it's not really her decision only, but because she is already "belong" to someone else. that's the main difference, and we see it here. Ml have waited for her, no pressure, he played naturally. So her selfish way to preserve herself, have gone silent step by step at his side. When she say "i choose myself" it means, "I choose my freedom to choose, do not force my decision." It's coherent. it always acceptable for this fl to say this words out loud, it isn't "selfish", it is from someone who knows her value. Even the princess have said things closer to this idea while many did not believed in her. She pursuit her objective against all odds ( strangely mostly mens), so if I follow you way of thinking she is also selfish ? Women in this drama are powerful with no exuberance.
It pleasant. And even I find she was "nerf" with her ability due the poison....
We can relate to their behavior and wishes without speech of virtue and morality. Just powerful coherent actions.

Oh my... so many people comment about FL in drama are pretty losing it... ^^'
