I've seen it. I rewatched it many times. I do see what you mean. But strictly speaking as SMY I think GJ is good here. Give me 5-10 more episodes after episode 9 then we'll see if GJ and YYT is worth watching or not. Right now up to ep 9 it's a little early.

I think the upbeat, "cute" actress with the casting of YYT will balance GJ SMY out. We just need more scenes with them to see if this dynamic will truly work. Although I think it's working already. I hope to see these scenes in Ep 10-11 when the two "leaves" DR. s

Okay level with me here. Although I think you may be right that GJ doesn't do as well when there's a female lead paired with him but strictly speaking as SMY in Blood River he is a really good fit. And until the final episode airs the first part of what I said may not even be true. I am very excited for how SMY and BHH relationship develops and how both actors will do. Only time can tell.

You didn't like end of Ep 2 when SMY "cocky"'"you're not worth my time" facial expressions? He fights the creepy, white villain coffin villain. Thought he was really good there. Subtle expressions. Nothing crazy. Ep 5-6 he gets better because certain plot/scenes bring out more intense emotions in him. Unless it's major, he's pretty stoic. The character is stoic, expressionless more often than not.

I love it! Well I hope in ep 9-10 we get a different vibe from him because they'll be a change in scenery. He'll be having a lot more time w BHH outside the Dark River. I hope it'll be less of the cold/stoic side and more shy/introverted/fun side of him come out.

I can agree with that. The character is boring. Thus the actor whoever it is must portray a boring character. It's the expressions when the actor has an emotional scene is what we'd judge him on.

Noooooo. I think the opposite. He is better in roles where his expressions are subtle such as SMY or Wen Kexing. Unless he's in an environment where he gets to be authentically himself - such as variety shows - then his natural bubbly, side of him is real and is unrestrained. He's bubbly there because he is being himself. But if he's ACTING and he's "forced" to play a happy go-lucky role I don't think he's strong in that department. In Rising Against the Wind he was similar as SMY, introverted, calm, smart and reserved as a valuable investor. That's why he did well there. Muted roles where he is not expressive suit him more whereas other actors don't do well, I think he shines. To put him a role like SCH it's too forced for him. Unless he can be authentically himself -like a 10 year old - similarly to how he is on variety shows - don't think those roles will suit him.

Simply my opinion.

Call it luck or call it skill. Can't deny that a boring character is harder to play, I think. Think GJ is getting better and better w each episode and especially after Ep 1.
