I keep changing my mind as the series progresses, started with boredom moved to hate for both male leads (emperor xu & jianming) and now I am loving their complex character portrayal. I have to admire the actors for making us hate their guts then turn to love their sacrifices that takes skill and effort - camera(s) and director(s) can only do so much if the actor(s) can't act.
On another note, I noticed that Haishi is always being knocked unconscious (striking the neck) by either Jianming / Emperor Xu that the move is starting to get overly used in this drama.
as I am at the half way point of this drama, am starting to hate both Fang Jianming & Emperor Xu. Dare I say they are both dirtbags? Yes. Understandably both are tortured with their decisions made in their younger years and present day has come to haunt them big time but SERIOUSLY!!! One moron turns his lady away and I think hands her over to the Emperor like a dinner dish while the other tortures the doppelganger of his late love who cares for him.
am so use to watching liu xue yi in ancient history dramas (love & redemption / ancient love poetry) with that I was so reluctant to even watch the first episode of this modern drama will try to follow through but might drop if its not what I am use to.
(liu is rumoured to be currently filming another history themed drama as the lead with crystal yuan - i hope he finally gets the girl this time).
No idea where I kept seeing the comments that the emperor played by xu kei cheng is crazy or weak. I prefer the words - tortured soul. Both william and xu seem to play both bad, good for their own reasons and tortured all at the same time.

I don't understand. Are you referring to incarnation? If you are then you must bare in mind this spans 100 years in the story so Ge'er is the 2nd reincarnation of Yin Xue's love. An Ye Luo was in love with Ge'er mother (Anye Ming - 1st reincarnation) while Yin Xue was in 100 year long meditation/recovery seclusion thus a 3rd love story occurred when Yin Xue was not around.
Just watched this drama only to realize it was aired in 2018. Underrated has a good story with an ending that is similar to a cliff hanger just not so intense.
I think that the Prince is actually the 2nd male lead no way is he just a 'support role'. I laugh when I also realized Prince is always wearing green either as his so called silk pyjamas to his official wear in public.
I think budget was the issue when I thought of the characters costumes almost everyone wore the same outfit throughout the entire drama except for the 3 main leads whom did get to change a handful of times, sets & scenery were alright. The cast acting was what brought the series to live, yes - chang an and wan mei did not even kiss but they portrayed their feelings perfectly through their actions for each other, body language, eyes and hugs. The screenwriter must have been either a nun or monk and lived in a monastery to be able to create a romance without romance.
The drama is good with good ending....yin xue did a good ND best job here..... .. But I have to bring out some…

Anye Ming (Ge er's mother) and Ge er are the incarnation of Yin Xue first love while Yin Xue was in seclusion for 100 years. Zhan Feng only manage to learn till level 8 (same as anye luo) but he was terribly injured while having to endure beatings in the dark river prison. Yin Xue manage to finish level 9th of the dark river powers but was trapped in a never ending dream only ge er managed to get him out in the final episode.
I mean she gets knocked out so often am surprised she still gets up without some permanent brain damage.
