Title Eight Hundred Spoiler
Now that it's officially over, here are my thoughts:

With his crimes, he deserved the end he got, but fairly speaking, Chen Hui didn't deserve the life he lived. He was inherently a really good and devoted guy who made a bad decision in a desperate moment and then kept paying for it. There were multiple times when he was brutally hit and kicked on the ground, jailed, and almost killed. He was charged for homicide, but both events were not intentional, rather accidental in the face of self-defence. Perhaps death was the relief he needed.

The saddest part? All that seemed to have been for nothing. All the taking-the-wrong-path-to-make-more-money, all that effort and struggle to get Song Ge a transplant and in a way get her life extended, just to be wasted away in lifetime imprisonment. Song Ge (if she has any conscience) will spend that extended life in guilt and regret.

I feel sad for the parents, especially the mother, having to go through the death sentence of their only child at age 23. As for Hong Bin, he valued honor and reputation more than the life of his son, so he kind of deserved it. He alone suspected CH because he knew him so well. The others hadn't caught on and CH was smart enough to slip through investigations unharmed. It was the father and his insistence that led CH to his unfortunate end.

I would've hated it if they hadn't shown what exactly had happened to Gao Ying, but it was a nice wrap to how they found out years later what had occured and when she realized that Ding Yue was the one who gave her the KMnO4. This also disclosed why Yang Bai Chun went insane after the fire incident with Huo Kai Ming, and where Huo Kai Ming picked the combustible combination from.

The team did a fantastic job with this series, the story, production, direction and acting were all commendable! Actors Hu Ke (Ding Yue) and Tu Song Yan (Huo Kai Ming) were exceptionally good with their convincing acting. I've only seen Tu Song Yan playing very polite and nice guy kinda roles, but this one was strikingly different. And of course, Xu Kai with his remarkable performance just left an indelible impression on the viewers, making us feel sorry for what became of Chen Hui. I hope Netflix picks this show, so more people get to see it. I also wish XK receives all the acclamation and accolades he deserves with this!

I'd recommend this drama to all, even if this is not your usual genre, you shouldn't miss this one!

Never in any drama series or movie have I ever seen emotional reaction as close to how a normal person would react in real life as was shown in this one after someone accidentally killed a person - so raw, so real. Powerful performance by XK!

Chen Hui and Gu Yan Zhen.. worlds apart!

I wonder whether there will be a resolution to the death of the father‘s former fiance, and how that will tie…
I believe, it will be resolved. The drama is so well put together that none of the scenes seem too packed with info or overwhelming, nor unnecessary or extra, each little bit is either foreshadowing or a plot line to be unravelled later.

No denying that, he has always been a remarkable actor with a striking screen presence. Right from his role as Fuca Fuheng you could see his acting prowess. Since after, you could see his consistent performance. Never said his acting wasn't as believable in the other roles, I'm just pointing out that he imbibes the character so well that each of his role is totally believable, so that it becomes difficult to imagine it's the same person playing such varying personalities.
Also, he has definitely been working hard to improve his acting, coz the only piece where I saw his acting to be a bit mediocre and not so convincing was in the movie Autumn Fairy Tale, one of his first works.
Chen Hui hits different not just because he was an ordinary person, (even Yang Hua was) but because within only a dozen eps, we saw such a range of emotions and expressions - guilt, anger, helplessness, joy, youthful enthusiasm, love, excitement, hope, pain, fear, regret, panic, suspicion, scheming, comforting etc. - that he didn't have the chance to express in any 1 drama before.

While watching Chen Hui, it's so difficult to imagine this is the same actor who played Bai Jue, Mei Zhu Yu, Han Ting, Lu Si Cheng, Yue Jin Zhao, Sheng Chu Mu etc. While his portrayal of each character is distinct, Chen Hui stands out as extraordinary!

I was observing the trailers of Yi Ou Chun, both Chen Hui and Shen Run are dark, sinister, even violent characters in their own ways, but their depiction is completely different.

Major spoiler from upcoming eps:

Noooo! He actually killed Tian Jian Hai! He was pushed to the extreme and got so emotionally overwhelmed that he not so willingly became a murderer. There's no way out for him now.

This is a dark psychological thriller wrapped in crime suspense, the kind with a relentless pursuer — like Fatal…
Where did you see he kills Huo Kai Ming? 😮

songge was adopted by gaoying's parents after her death.
Yeah, that's what I remember from ep 2, but then it doesn't make sense for Liu Na and HongBin to talk about Song Ge's approval for GY's autopsy, coz technically, she had no actual connection with GY.

Ep 10
Limin is transfered to the city the same ep that Chen Hui and Song Ge move to the city. Looks like we can expect them to be in trouble as Limin was placed there for the next part of the story.

Also, Ding Yue's overreaction was quite sus. Clearly she's still jealous of Gao Ying and raised Song Ge (her relative?). Feels like she was involved in the death of GY.

The last scene was jaw-dropping! The way they hid the stock of bottles, they're not going to have the peaceful new life they'd imagined.

For her last song in Fengyang, she sang "Boundless Oceans, Vast skies", which is a song about one's journey through struggles, holding onto your dreams and freedom despite hardship, doubt, and pressure from the world. Chen Hui quietly holds SongGe's hand and gives her a comforting smile. It was a nice touch, nicely put together.

Chen Hui kept total control and acted motionless and emotionless through everything, even when hot porridge spilled onto his hand, he didn't even flinch. He couldn't however continue when he got overwhelmed with guilt and broke down when his dad apologised for suspecting him.

end of episode 9, waiting for chenhui's genius answer tomorrow
Oh, he's a pro at making up stories. He'll probably say something along the lines of Huo Kaiming kidnapped him to put pressure on Chen Hongbing to hand Cai over to him. He used that to let Limin know that he was in danger and to frame Kaiming.

So many dramas in the 70s 80s and 90s,china is having a nostalgia hangover lately
I guess, one of the reasons of having an older than present setting for mysteries is that it's easier to create a mystery for a time when the were no AI, cellphones and other later technologies. Crime (and it's investigation) took a different shape back then as compared to now.

This is not nostalgic story. It seems it’s just the opposite. It could happen anytime and anywhere. It’s about…
It's 1997. It was the first murder that was in 1972.

directors like to incorporate Xu Kai’s personal interests with his charactersJust the first two episodes I saw…
Yeah, that's a pattern too. There are scenes with billiards as well.

there is something hidden / mysterious about her and i think her character is more than just merely a detective…
Ooh, that could be possible too.
But then, it would be too much of a coincidence that she was drawn into investigating this particular case, which she says would be her last, and Song Ge to be at the core of it.
