It is complex. Neo-Confucianism is the main ideology of Joseon and Buddhism which was primarily wide-spread in Goryeo (previous dynasty) is slowly pushed back by Confucianiam. The drama isnt about the ideology tho, or about religion, but more of a power struggle between the new king & queen as the title suggests. It is primarily political drama :)

I am at work so I cant elaborate my response more, but at first part you are wrong. He was very important to his father as he was his father's right hand when building Joseon dynasty. So he wasnt tossed aside, he was tossed aside when he murdered his half-brothers for the throne. Min family was important because back than there was a law making owning private army impossible, but Min had an army and they landed it to Bang Won so he could do a coup against other princes and king's advisor.
