Okay. I haven't seen him before but the guy looks promising. Thanks for writing the article :) Perhaps I should…
I'll be the negative nancy and tell you watch for the eye candy. The drama sucked mega, chunky balls. This coming from a person who is a sucker for Choi Min Soo and Jung Kwang Ryul. I was also perving on Yoo Seung Ho though I'm really more an ahjussi lover, but the plot sucked such monkey balls. The character development was super terrible.
You don't know why you love him? Lol. Let's start by the fact that he looks like he was carved by the gods and honestly, I think that is 80% Won Bin's credibility. He's really not the best of actors but he has a very reserved personality coupled with insanely good looks and voila. I have indeed watched his movies (I confess for the co-stars who were what drew me in), but his insanely good looks are hard to ignore. The man looks insanely good looking but anyone who wants to go and rave about his acting I'm afraid, I will have to side eye. The selling point of the Man From Nowhere were the action scenes which I thoroughly applaud him for but yeah, acting...? He's barely had any challenging or versatile roles or anything that's really worth noting. He's also very fortunate with the co-stars as in my love Shin Ha Kyun and the lady in Mother which I need to just finish. I actually think he should take on more acting roles and strive to improve because when the looks are gone, what will be left? He should have taken advantage of his popularity and cemented himself among the creme de la creme.
He's cute & seems to be one of those emo type of actors that I (mostly) love. I have several of his movies…
He's eye candy to be honest. Nothing more. I'm always amazed how looks can really up someone's credibility but yes, he's an adonis but really, the acting is hardly a rave.
It seems films are ridiculously different from dramas because I find some Thai movies have amazing action scenes. Though not high budget, they are still well produced and fun to watch. I really cannot get enough of Jeeja Yanin's action scenes. Plus, she's not the only one. I find Thai action scenes to be some of the best period. You just will not find any Korean movie with a female lead that can give you that type of action. Even in the west, there's just no female lead that will give you some good stunts like that. The athleticism and quality required is just not there.
Another category for the rival/plot stealers (They have just as great reasoning if not better than the leads.)
1. Lady Mishil - Kim Seon Duk
2. Ga Ri On - Tree With Deep Roots
3. Young Do - The Heirs.
Wouldn't watch this if I was paid. For the fact, that they are both such terrible actors, I'd rather sit through…
I can attempt to tolerate Lee Jong Suk's like three expressions (I am not even hating, I have sat through three dramas he's been in *shudders recalling Secret Garden* and a movie!) but my goodness, that actress is so stiff, if she were any stiffer she'd be a candy cane. The only way this will make 20% is if the writer is a genius. In which case, I have no idea why a genius would pick these two as the leads but if it even surpasses 10%, I will cry at the future of K-drama and offer a grandiose apology. Unless of course, Song Kang Ho or Choi Min Sik get a cameo in this. I have no ill feelings towards LJS as I do enjoy him on variety shows and he's easy on the eyes though not my cup of tea, but all that aside, his acting is terrible. To be fair, there aren't many outstanding actors in my opinion in SK but some are even below mediocre.
I personally like the character GPS. It's like you can run randomly into the street and find the character you are looking for. This was hilarious to me in Gu Family Book. It's like want to find Kang Chil? Look in the forest... I mean really...
Another is slapping and water throwing. The bitch of a character always slaps the female lead over nothing really and it's like what? Same with the water/coffee throwing.
Also the kindergarten lovers story line. Okay, it can happen but I totally do not even remember 90% of the people I went to kindergarten with let alone do I cling on to my kindergarten love. Haven't thought about him in years!! It's like met you when we were ten years old and ten years later, haven't seen you, heard from you but I'm clinging on to my love and virginity for when we meet. I'm sorry but this is psycho to me.
Watching people sleep...Does anyone really have the patience for this?
Car accidents. Why does every car accident involve the character literally freezing as the car heads towards them. I've heard driving in Korea is a total nightmare and people are cautious crossing the roads so why pull a blank face and wait for the car to hit you? How about jumping out of the way?
I have so many of these that I notice, it's ridiculous. Ever notice how the supposedly poor girl has the exact same cell phone as like the rich guy. She practically lives in a shack working her arse off but has like a $300 cell phone. Mmm, priorities girl.
Plus, I know the clothes are sponsored and the stylist has to make them look the part but in spite of trying to make Park Shin Hye look poor, girl is wearing a $80 shirt...
Only on 2nd ep so I might change my mind later on, but so far I'm kind of puzzled as to why this drama is so highly…
My love comes from the fact that it is almost impossible for me to find a drama full of engaging characters (both protagonist and antagonists) and also well written. I mean the drama actually was really well written. I feel like Japanese dramas are on par with western shows in terms of writing. I'm talking good western shows. Everyone bitches about the mediocre ones when you don't even have to go far to get good shows like House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc. When it comes to Korean dramas, I find I have to tolerate A LOT and attribute it to cultural differences. I would never tolerate a western drama that is written like a Korean drama though. Water throwing step mothers, mediocre actresses and lazy scripts, no heavens. Yet, I watch K-dramas the most because the high production and pace is just addictive. Nonetheless, if a drama like this made it to the west, I think even western audiences would appreciate it.
Wouldn't watch this if I was paid. For the fact, that they are both such terrible actors, I'd rather sit through 4 chapters of my Economics with Calculus textbook. That is 150 pages + of profit maximization and creating Lagrangians. Mind you, that is still more expressions than these two can manage. Then you have a wilting premise biting off the hospital trend. I'm calling 6% ratings.
I don't find this stupid in that it's related to psychology. I actually find this interesting and they probably focus on other boy bands too. There are lots of GPA boosters that are interesting but not relevant. I've taken courses in dance, social media, etc...
I think me and the writer of this article have the same taste. From the ones I've watched, I also thought those villains were totally boring and wasn't as enamored with some of these folks as a lot of other people are. Min Jong Gook was totally uninteresting to me too. I have ranted about the vapidness that I think is IHYV but also ranted about him and that incompetent system that allowed his villainy to continue. I mean my gosh, never has a murderer had such an easy time ever! Plus, it's like Forensics doesn't exist...
Nonetheless, as many have pointed, you missed out on Mishil! She was just so so good. Everything about her. As I like to say, she pretty much had a manly role as a female character. She had many lovers but none controlled her. She was powerful, strong, ACTUALLY intelligent, evil and awesome. A feminist's dream if you will.
My favorite villain is Yoon Je Mun's character in a Tree With Deep Roots, Owada (Hanzawa Naoki) and Mishil (Queen Seon Deok). Villains who aren't quite villains yet are. They are both interesting, powerful and stand for something. They stole or matched the spot light of the heroes. Oh and White Christmas. Not a drama but movie: I really like Prince Sunyang in The Face Reader. Though that is due to Lee Jung Jae.
Worst villains
Gu Family Book (A despicable bastard who is so terribly written, I couldn't)
I hear Your Voice (I found all the characters to be vapid and he had potential but I stopped caring about his evil laughs and forced villainy half way through. I didn't even care why he was a villain.
Empress Ki - All weird arseholes who are just so 2 dimensional.
A Were Wolf Boy - Another boring arsehole.
If I had to choose a legitimate list based on acting well: No one in this list even comes close. Actors 1. Choi…
I have seen multiple dramas with Yoon Eun Hye in it [My Fair Lady, Coffee Prince, Lie to Me, Black Minidress (the whole cast sucked at acting)] and she has been your standard actress, but even if a drama sucks, there was a point I literally asked myself. "What in God's name is she doing?" That was in Lie to me. I mean don't get me wrong. The plot sucked monkey balls, the script was absolutely terrible but I cringed so hard, I was like, never again.
The only person to induce such cringing in me is Jung Il Woo.
If I had to choose a legitimate list based on acting well: No one in this list even comes close.
Actors
1. Choi Min Sik
2. Han Suk Kyu
3. Hwang Jung Min
Personal Choice: Lee Jung Jae: Simply because I couldn't put him in top 3. I absolutely loved him in the Face Reader. I am also throwing in my ahjussi love Ryu Seung Ryong (Masquerade, Miracle in Cell No 7)
Under 30.
1. Yeo Jin Gu. That boy can act!
2. Kim Soo Hyun. Not as versatile but potential to be great
3. Joo Won - So so so talented.
Personal choice: Song Joon Ki - I used to think he sucked so bad but realized it was actually his lack of good roles. When not in your stereotypical pretty boy character, he's quite good.
Actresses
1. Go Hyun Jung
2. Han hyo Joo
Personal choice: Kim Sun Ah
I do not like most Korean actresses, I don't see a day coming when I will. Most induce an immense cringe and few are tolerable.
I don't know what it is, but I can't stand Kim Sun Ah.
Which makes enjoying her dramas so much harder! ;D
As with all these actresses, lol. I happen to like Kim Sun Ah because she actually is capable of inducing emotion. She has the best kiss scenes and crying scenes of any actress. I mean when she cries it's like the world is falling apart. I don't blame you because I also can't stand Ha Ji Won, Shin Min Ah, Yoon Eun Hye (no offense, but she was so bloody awful in Lie To Me, I blacklisted her. Also watching her in coffee prince marked my introduction into Korean actresses and blank, doe eyed looks.) Song Ji Hyo is adorable in Running Man but cannot act her way out of a paper bag. I'm glad her role in movies is not significant so I don't have to blacklist her. She also has the same roles always. Not one ounce of versatility.
I really started liking Owada's character. At first, he seemed charming but then as he developed into an antagonist, I was like to hell with him, but the climax when Hanzawa made him bow was just about the most perfect scene I have ever watched. They both acted so well that I shivered. On that note, they make characters who I at first think are total arse holes likeable. I really like how they justify the villains. They show you the side where they are humans who have families too. They are people who like Hanzawa are also trying to survive.
I only like Kim Sun Ah out of the list lol. I feel Yeo Jin Gu should be in the under 30 list because he's easily one of the best young actors out there. Kid is winning legitimate awards. I also feel Go Hyun Jung is easily one of the best Korean actresses. Ha Ji Won seems to be everyone's rave but mine.
