It's funny how much can change in a week. The show spent 6 episodes establishing a world, main characters and…
I also think Jack's behavior tracks with what we've seen from him so far. He is gullible, constantly sacrificing his happiness for whatever he perceives is the greater good and unwilling to find a real job to pay for his debts. All of that was fine early in the series. But by the half way point I'd expect some growth.
I'm also going to just skip complaining about how grandma is just stuck in the hospital racking up hospital fees with no diagnosis or specialist attending to her. Because in an episode filled with SO MANY contrivances, my brain can only take so much foolishness before I just give up and put the show on hold. Which I really don't want to do.
It's funny how much can change in a week. The show spent 6 episodes establishing a world, main characters and giving viewers a reason to be invested in the story. Episode 7 shockingly undermined all of that and I'm extremely disappointed.
I was really looking forward to this episode. But if I watched episode 7 without seeing the previous episodes, I'd think Rose, Boss, Nang and Jack were the main characters. And the story revolves around rich people playing god with the lives of regular Thai people. And I probably wouldn't think the series is a BL. I HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN WATCHING THAT KIND OF SHOW.
I care about Jack, Joke, Arun, Tattoo, Grandma, the little girl and Hoy (a bit) because the writers spent a lot of time giving me reasons to care about them. All of the other characters are white noise to me. We established that Rose was a typical rich brat who exists to be a plot device to delay J&J from getting together. And we established repeatedly that Boss is a terrible person who also exists to keep the leads apart and hurt Arun. We also established that the poor people in this world have their fates controlled by heartless rich people. Spending an hour and 15 minutes showing us all of that again while side lining the interesting characters is a head scratching waste of time.
I really hope that this episode is an outlier and not the first of many irritating/frustrating episodes. But knowing how Thai BLs are these days, I won't be surprised if this is yet another series that starts great and fizzles out around the half way point. But I REALLY hope that doesn't happen.
That you’re a "hater" because you deliver a negative review is very teenage girlie to me. Calm down it’s just…
Idk if it's just teenage girls who use that term for another person who shares an opinion they disagree with, but it would be great if people could accept that having differing opinions on a tv show is not a bad thing or a reason to start an internet war.
You’re so correct, I recently posted a comment on YT commenting on Leng’s acting and how it’s lacking. People…
That's the main reason I never leave comments for series on yt. It's full of sycophants and group think. Also, "constructive criticism" is not in a lot of people's vocabulary these days. Which is really unfortunate.
I originally thought I'd binge the whole series in one day. But after finishing episode 1 on Viki Plus, this feels too special to race through. This is the most realistic portrayal of gay life in SK that I've seen since before covid. I might try to pace myself and only watch 2 episodes per day.
I felt so uncomfortable every time Sammy came on the screen.. and I love her so much but why is she always reduced…
I 100% agree. The GMMTV actresses are the only reason I didn't say all BL actresses have been terrible. There have been many GMMTV BLs with great female side characters.
I just finished episodes 4 and 5 and I'm feeling so many emotions. The teachers actions were so shocking and wrong that I felt extreme rage. Mishima's reaction was very realistic and heartbreaking. Kirino and Taro were so wonderful and precious, they'll always be heroes in my book!!!! I'm looking forward to episode 6.
I must say that I really respect the writer for telling such an unconventional story. These days it's easy to forget what it must have been like for gay people living decades ago. But this show does a great job of highlighting what many gay boys/men probably felt during that time.
I felt so uncomfortable every time Sammy came on the screen.. and I love her so much but why is she always reduced…
True, but after all these years it's hard to think of many actresses who have appeared in BLs who haven't been obnoxious, antagonists or complete fools. Which is a shame.
I felt so uncomfortable every time Sammy came on the screen.. and I love her so much but why is she always reduced…
Exactly. The characters she plays tend to be people the audience is supposed to laugh at instead of laugh with. They remind me of how over weight characters or Kathoeys are often depicted in many series. I don't watch shows to laugh at people and I don't watch BL to see women be made into fools. She deserves so much better and I wish companies would stop creating characters like that and give her a better kind of character to portray.
I've noticed a pattern with Thai BLs these days. -A new show starts with well known actors and some people who have watched a lot of BLs point out where the show is lacking. -People who usually just started watching BL come in, attack the others, call people "haters", and tell people not to watch the show in an effort to prevent anything that isn't 100% praise. -A few weeks pass, casual viewers start to watch and express similar concerns about the writing, directing or acting. -The show passes the halfway point and the shortcomings are so obvious the consensus shifts and most people agree that the show isn't very good. -The show ends, everyone forgets about it and moves on to the next series where the cycle begins again.
I'm so tired of lazy writing getting a pass. I'm so tired of seeing people get called names for pointing out lazy writing. I'm so tired of the "I don't care what you think, shut up if you don't like it" crowd bullying people into silence on so many MDL pages. Acting, writing and directing are jobs. To do good at any job requires, skill, effort and care. If these writers/directors keep getting new jobs no matter how bad they were at their last jobs, THINGS WON'T IMPROVE. Some of us have been watching GMMTV for a long time. There was a time when they made the best BLs, but that isn't true anymore. Even if I ignore the incredible series consistently being made in other countries, I can't ignore that the best Thai BLs are being made by other companies. Saying that is not hating. I think the majority of us want to watch good/great Thai BLs. But if we keep accepting mediocrity, that's what GMMTV (and other companies) will keep making.
Ohm has been my favorite actor for 8 years. I truly want him to be in a great series again. This is not that. And I worry that the other upcoming GMMTV series will be no better. That is a shame. The company has so much money (compared to smaller companies) and so many talented actors. But it continues to waste them on bad scripts directed by people who don't seem to care about making good shows.
Sorry for the rant, but with so many amazing BLs airing in 2024, it's hard for me not to be frustrated by a company that barely putting in any effort because they know some fans will praise anything they put out and continue to buy their merch and spend money on all their events. Which is all the company really cares about, more money!
It's nearly impossible for a show to have a flawless beginning, but 2024 is the year of BL blessings and LFCT gave and kept giving!!!! There haven't been many KBLs this year, but I have little doubt that 3 of the best series of 2024 will be KBLs.
Love for Love's Sake was basically perfect. This show has all the ingredients to be amazing (leads with great chemistry, relatable characters and a compelling story) and Love in the Big City starts in a couple days. Any BL fan who hasn't seen/isn't watching these shows is truly missing out!
2024 continues to be the year of BL blessings. I'm so glad the team behind this series found GagaOOLala. I hope this becomes a trend. And I REALLY hope everyone who can afford it, watches this legally. When BLs are profitable, that helps the cast/crew and leads to opportunities for others in the future.
*sigh* I've been watching Pineare and Sammy since Love Sick (2014) and Earth since Love by Chance (2018). I think all 3 actors can do great with the right character and director, but I'm just not loving them here. Seeing a cast who are in their mid/late twenties playing college students isn't terrible, since most of the cast are decent actors. But Sammy and Pineare have played characters like this so many times, it just feels stale and kinda irritating seeing them do it again.
I love Earth and know he's a talented actor. I also think him and Pond have solid chemistry. But I do wish he could play a character who doesn't whine/cry constantly. He is a strong actor, but he's been type cast and I wish he could get a new type of role. With the Hill Ter storyline likely wrapping up next week, sadly I don't feel like the 3 episodes have done enough to make me invested. Hopefully the other pairs are given more time for their romances to blossom.
I just binged the first 3 episodes and fell in love. Japan always had a way telling stories in unique and interesting ways. Now that we're back in the era of relying on fan subs for many Japanese series, it feels even more special to find something great knowing you have to wait an unknown amount of time to see the next episode (with subs). I'll eagerly await the next episodes!
Love in Translation made them my favorite couple of 2023. Century of Love was one of the best Thai BLs of 2024, mainly because of the cast and strong chemistry between Offroad/Daou. I guess the BL gods heard us when we asked for more of these two and I am soooooo grateful that this show will air in early 2025. No matter what the plot is, I'm watching it 🥰
