That's the whole point. No one is forcing the participants either so soldiers are not the worst ones.
yeppp! if anything, the last few episodes showed us how expendable both the players and the soldiers are, and how they're more alike than we think. It is a chilling mirror to real life with civilians and the bottom rung military folks.

if it adds to the case, Thanos also has each of his nails painted a different colour for each infinity stone, adds random English phrases to his dialogues, performs ironically funny rap lyrics and is a riot!
he's so babygirl I swear! just wanted to give him a hug poor guy definitely has some ptsd
yeah but that's unresolved trauma for you. was it right that he did that? no. should he have not volunteered if he couldn't handle the job? yes. but his entire arc this season was about being subconsciously made to act according to some masculine ideals that he doesn't have. his time in the marines definitely played a role into it.
