I'm just going to hold my hands up and say I'm definitely not the target audience for this drama and in fact, most of the BL dramas that continue to be churned out from the Thai production line.
Some, not all, but definitely this one, left me utterly and completely mesmerised at how lacking it is in substance - literally bereft of any kind of depth or most importantly, imagination in the writing or direction. It's just endless streams of bad, vacuous, childish, slapstick writing and dialogue, delivered by what amounts to at best, mediocre to bad acting.
It astounds me how these huge networks with such deep budgetary pockets, take absolutely no pride in what they push out to their audiences. It's pure fan-service, however, fan-service that continues to be delivered badly. This episode felt like what I imagine to be a girly fan-service meet.
I think another of my issues is that I see actors as simply that, actors. They are on screen to deliver a fictional character well, and then move onto their next role, be it gay or heterosexual. I strongly don't believe in this Asian obsession with 'shipping' actors. Because, first and foremost, they are actors playing a role. It's not real. I truly believe it is not healthy for them mentally or for the progression of their careers. Fan fixation grows and in turn, so does their obsession to own and control, both their working and private lives. The latter is just so fucked up in my mind.
I honestly couldn't sit through a 2nd episode of this drama, let alone 16, perhaps if it dropped 7-8 years ago, but not today.
You're almost correct. It starts with blue - which is literally uncooked. Then goes to rare - lightly charred but very pink in the middle. Then medium rare - charred on the outside, but definitely pink in the middle. This is in fact, what Uncle did order. Then medium - no pink in the middle. Then finally, well-done - which is pretty much overcooked and tastes as leathery as a shoe. English chefs hate destroying a good steak in this way.
Well, that final episode really did literally limp over the finish line. Such a great opportunity missed.
I really enjoyed the acting of the female lead - very natural and direct. However, like others, I felt zero chemistry between our leads. The script was also completely unrealistic, which made for tiresome viewing in the latter episodes.
It's a 4/10 for me and no, I won't be re-watching.
Judging from your ratings, you give BLs the side-eye and fawn over mid, overrated "straight" storylines like Trash…
Hilarious. Such a seriously immature response. You really haven’t done your homework on my viewing preferences you rude human. 90% of what I watch is BL. The fact that unlike you, I’m intelligent enough to be honest with my critique as to what makes a good, or bad BL, in my opinion, says a lot to me about how utterly childish you are. #JustSaying. #GoPlaySomewhereElse
I find myself a little conflicted by this drama. There's just something about South Korean BL's that always leave me with a slight feeling of discomfort. So many leave me with this underlying feeling of homophobia. It's like they really don't like and want to commit 100% to gay culture. They don't want to see two gay men truly happy.
Yet, these production companies aren't stupid. They know BL dramas are a serious and ever growing lucrative revenue stream. As a country, they're also very proud, so don't want to miss out on 1) Making money and 2) Being seen to be lagging behind and conservative in their thinking when it comes to such strong BL competition from Thailand, Japan and the Taiwanese.
I think the first 6 episodes of this drama were better than the remaining two. What is good about South Korean dramas is that in the main, the actors can indeed act. Being a huge lover of music, I especially liked the music theme of the drama and the depth they went to with Han Tae Yi's trauma over losing his brother. South Korea definitely knows how to tell a story, unlike much which comes out of Thailand.
Haha that look made me laugh so hard, he looked like a puppy
Hehe! He's never stood a chance. However, what I like about him, is that he does own his feelings and is not afraid to tell Iwanaga exactly what he thinks about him.
What a beautifully sensual episode. I find Furuya Robin so incredibly emotive with his eyes. The scene where he was sitting on the couch, ill, feeling sorry for himself, yet told Miyata he could leave, the look in his eyes were so pitiful, you could see he was literally begging him to stay. Excellent acting. As a character of very few words, preferring instead to remain the ultimate prick tease, the way he expresses and emotes his feelings and how Miyata reads and reciprocates them, makes for incredible chemistry between our two leads.
It's so refreshing to watch a mature Japanese BL. That shower scene - so damn sexy! The dialogue is very well written and delivered by our two leads and the directing, thoughtful. The story oozes desire, sensuality and ultimately sexiness.
Only in the last 5-minutes, do we eventually see Lee Do Han finally have his 'light-bulb' moment and set aside his selfishness, cowardice and manipulation, for the sake of Na Ah Jung and Lee Ji Han, who have constantly been trying to protect him and his secret. Up until this point, his character has just shouted, me, me, me. Poor me. Finally, he grew a backbone. It seriously needed to happen with just two episodes to go. I would have preferred it earlier.
I think the drama has lost the funny charm we had in the beginning. Thankfully, we avoided the 2nd FL syndrome with Yoon Chae Won, not turning into a psycho, Chaebol, entitled bitch. Her conversation with Na Ah Jung was refreshing to hear. You could see she's sharply intelligent and genuinely wanted to hear and understand Na Ah Jung's viewpoint on both brothers.
I find myself bored with the whole narrative as to how the mother died and the take-over of the business. As each week, I'm left hearing exactly the same dialogue between grandfather and the three siblings. It has left me not caring and has grown tiresome.
Two more episodes to go. I'm only here to see how the relationship with our leads concludes.
I guess JH feels betrayed by AJ at first because she told him that she loved DH several times in the earlier episodes.…
I like you, agree that JH has a lot to process. However, like we've already said and agreed upon, she has been protecting his brother, but in her own way. I believe, once he's digested what is happening, he'll come to realise this.
You see, I get DH trusting AJ over his brother. After all, they've been friends for over 15-years, literally in high-school. There's a reason why they've been friends for so long. She saved him from his bullying at being 'potentially gay'. DH implicitly trusts her.
JH is an intelligent man and would obviously see the deep roots of their friendship. The fact that they haven't been together in 5-years, to me, doesn't make a difference, because true friendships, irrespective of time, life, job, commitments doesn't make a difference in friendship. If the friendship is good and strong, you mature enough to understand the complexities of life, you'll simply as friends pick up where you left off.
I think the narrative with CEO Yoo, could potentially be this dramas downfall. I honestly hope it isn't. I don't want another 2nd FL lead, stereotypical K-drama, which turns her into a delusional, obsessed psycho. So bored of this cliche shit. She's a CEO for a reason. She's up until this point been intelligent. Love doesn't make someone so utterly stupid beyond realism, only obsession does.
As to Grandpa. I find myself intrigued by what he's actually thinking. As currently, his actions make no sense to my brain.
I guess JH feels betrayed by AJ at first because she told him that she loved DH several times in the earlier episodes.…
Yes. Really good points you've made. Especially in terms of how many times she's told JH how much she loves DH.
Also agree on your 2nd point. However, deep down, wouldn't he feel relieved that she's simply protecting his brother like he is, but in a different way? I think he'll come to this conclusion from the preview of the next episode, but as you say and I agree, a lot to process having just heard.
3rd point. Agree. It's not his story to tell. And, I'd have disliked his character, if he'd told our female lead. I don't think she'd have respected him for it and he knows this. I think he believes in his brother and is waiting for him to have the confidence to come out.
Ooh! This was a good episode. This episode SO needed to happen to move the narrative along. Tomorrow is going to be interesting.
Will Choi Seung Ah, ignore Yoon Chae Won's words of warning about doing anything to bring down Lee Ji Han? Possibly. Maybe. Although, I don't think so. She has too much to lose by dropping this bomb.
Are we seated and ready, waiting to see Yoon Chae Won turn into everything we despise about a seriously rich 2nd FL, being rejected and therefore feeling scorned? To be honest I could do without it. It bores me beyond belief how these woman don't have any pride, are shameless in their endeavours to secure what they want and ultimately disgrace themselves showing lack of self-esteem. Suck it up girl. Suck it up. He simply isn't into you. FACT.
How long will it take Lee Ji Han to get his head around the fact that Na Ah Jung knew that his brother was gay and actively agreed to a fake marriage to protect him? My hope is that, like him, he will also see that she's all about protecting him in her own fucked up way. At this point, I can't see why he wouldn't be elated.
Will Lee Do Han grow some much needed balls, put aside his cowardice and selfishness for his own gains and finally step up and out himself? Don't get me wrong, I hugely empathise with his predicament. It would just be nice to see him bravely own and think about the effect he has on so many people around him. A move in his character development would be nice at this stage and I think we're going to get it.
Questions. Questions. I'm here for it. Bring on tomorrow. You have me invested.
When I first met my boyfriend I said to him: "My main mission in this relationship, is to surprise and delight you." This is what this drama has done for me. I've been surprised and delighted throughout. If you view my Watchlist, you'll in the most part, see a person who errs towards romance and BL's. However, sometimes, my brain just needs to switch it up, as too much of one thing, inevitably becomes boring to my brain.
I've particularly adored watching Jin Yi Soo's character development. The writer of this drama did an excellent job in the beginning of showcasing him as a carefree, rich boy who was simply out to find and experience his next adrenaline rush. Life was about the most exhilarating ways to get his next high. Then he joins the police force and eventually starts to grow up and mature. His quirky, intelligent nature and unashamed use of his wealth and contacts, made this drama very funny and engaging, for what is a cop show.
The final episode and especially the scenes with his 'brother' and Lee Kang Hyun's mum, giving him a meal and comforting him, is why I'm giving this drama a 9/10. It did indeed surprise and delight me.

Dropped.
