Initially they planned to present a story of little girl's biological ogical parents. So the intention to make her ML's adopted daughter was there. In the novel he is poisoned as well. The novel has a HE, they get married, a proper adult wedding night and expecting a baby. If I remember correctly it is not an antidote exactly but the doctors and her poison expert Grandpa manage to suppress the poison.

They are engaged at this point but his first thoughts are that to him she is like a child needing protection and he does not harbor any improper thoughts.
