Who are these people putting any random Death Games as recommendations for this, this is so much deeper than just a normal death game, you obvously MISSED THE WHOLE POINT OF THE SHOW....
I'm putting Society Game as recc, it's more aligned to what Squid Game is actually about aka. critical commentary on society and not just a shallow action game
the genre is only mystery, i want ROMANCE as well !!
Agreed, these two are like those pairings you never thought of together, but once suggested the possibility you're like "Why did I never think of these two together, what a FANTASTIC pairing!"
Anyway are you sure there's no romance, for example Vinzenco has some even though no romance tags. I noticed this mystery-COMEDY genre tends to do minimal romances quite often (compared to more serious thriller mysteries, which skip it entirely) or at least hinted at the possibility even if they never kiss/no or not much skinship. The description of this makes the male & female leads sounds like a fun bickering pair that will show alot of fun bickering type of chemistry like the leads of Switch: Change the world, despite no ppssibly official romance . A fun platonic duo with chemistry can also be fun to watch, that's what learned from Switch and from The Fiery Priest too.
Still hoping for at least some romance though for this bickering duo here 🙏
The beginning is very rough. The 2 main leads basically are in a competition on which one can be the most arrogant…
I agree the ML here is too much for an all-powerful male Mary Sue. He is too perfect. I guess they try to compensate by giving him the flaw of also being annoying and judgem ental..but he winds up just as both a mary sue AND annoying lol. To me JJH plays too charmingly that I'm just mildly annoyed by her character so far but mostly even liking her & rooting for her character.
Despite that this drama has imo a VERY high entertainment value, no dragging at all; I hope it stays that way throughout whole drama (I just started it for the first time).
From what ep onwards did it start to get good then? I'm mid ep 2 and still bored as hell, and wondering if i should…
Well I guess PURE family dramas are not for me; I do like them when they mix in Revenge or Mafia and make them less about real life problems that way but more real danger aka. Many Crime-Telenovelas and some turkish drama.
Sky Castle is more like a parody of real life, and I do like parodies...when they are more either COMEDIES or FULLY MAJKANG (or more scifi/fantasy/unique ala Squid Game). One The Woman for example is great but has COMEDY and identity swap mixed in w. typical boring fam drama. So to me, Sky Castle comes ascross as neither commiting to HILARIOUS Social commentary (tag claims this is black comedy...but it's honestly lacking, Vinzenco for example has actual black COMEDY) nor going fully high-stakes makjang; ending up with just a typical fam drama that shows more real life genre but in a boring way.....So I'm left neither laughing nor emotionally affected by the drama.
The goals of the main characters are also too boring to me, so I end up not rooting for anyone on Sky Castle. In Penthouse I want to slap all chracters every second lol😅, Sky Castle in worst in that I don't give a f what happens even lol.
One The Woman, Vincenzo, The Fiery Priest = Aced the comedy
Many Mafia telenovelas (they often have fam drama mixed in), Black Money Love, aka. mafia-rom-fam turkish drama(turkish dramas frequently have fam drama), Squid Game (not much fam drama but has a more fun and unique take on real life parody/social commentray than Sky Castle), The Last Empress (fam drama w . makjang edge) = NAILED The Makjang/drama (without being annoying like Penthouse)
Sky Castle = in between, not commiting to either side, No rootable goals, stakes aren't high enough (compared to when mafia or dangerous revenge involved) or not funny enough either, no laugh aloud black comedy....I wind up bored.
But anyway that's just my opinion, it seems most other were able to enjoy this drama, that is fine, I'm happy for you all, just different tastes.
And thanks for being logical and not judging nor attacking for differing taste, too many times the fans of popular dramas get mega butthurt about the few who dislike and childishly start attacking for differing opinions. 🤦🏻♀️
Btw sorry for long comment 😅, as I was typing I realized more & more exactly why Sky Castle wasn't for me.
Penthouse feels more like. a parody of makjnag than a makjang 😅 Maybe its genres should be listed as both makjang AND comedy lol
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RATING THIS MASTERPIECE SO LOW?!?!
Should be 10/10, but really this one is really like 15/10 utter flawless perfection AND DEEP AND INSPIRING AS F!!....People just don't know a masterpiece when they see one sigh
Propably idiots who only want to watch fluffy happy shallow things
Just started watching this classic for the first time, so far I can understand the hype, it's really entertaining so far.
Also FINALLY THEY CAST A CHILD ACTRESS WHO ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE THE LEAD!! She's looks SO alike , that everytime I see her on screen I'm blown away by the fact that she's NOT Jun Ji Hyun's real life sister lol; finally no suspension of disbelief needed on that front! XD
So grateful to writer-nim for NOT making the leads into the terminally ill ones, so tired of that overused and ANNOYING trope; this sounds much better with others being the patients and watching the leads grow from it all rather than having to watch a ticking timebomb for the leads. Here's hoping for some AMAZING writing, JCW deserves to finally have a drama with good writing all the way through!
Just because a drama doesn't have a " happy ending" doesn't mean it's not a good drama. Life is not always full…
I always say you have to add at least 2-3 stars to every sad/not fluffy butterflies drama (and usually 2-3 stars taken away if it's fluffy happy drama) on MDL because of the idiotic kdrama audience masses who are EXTREMELY ALLERGIC to sadness & keep giving bad scores to dramas not fluffly unicorns 😁🦄⭐happy go lucky.
This is just so-so, the female lead is really the best thing here, she's hilarious; but at same time the drama is kind of boring too, not eager to continue, only not dropping it yet because of FL character is one of the best I've ever seen in a drama; but I don't know, the plot is just dragging, it doesn't really deserve the hype....
I finished watching this series in a few days and I have a few things I wanted to get off of my chest. First of…
" The only redeeming thing would be is Joon Ho is still alive and didn't in fact perish in the sea and has been secretly hiding to take down the people behind the game and Gi Hoon joins him. Then that would be an entirely different genre of this drama. So who knows. " >>>> Sounds like the plot for a possible season 2. Maybe becuse it's Netflix who likes seasons, they're planning a season 2??? Especially considering the drama's success. Would be better than just leaving the ML doing that at the end...
Also I like the idea of the cop actually being alive, he's possibly the most interesting character, if they'd do a season 2 I want that cop back and fighting/exposing them.
When the world is set up in such a hardcore sucking way that it's a more viable option for some people to get themselves kidnapped to play a deadly game set up by some unknown psycho than trying to survive the "old fashioned way"...... I LOVE the social commentary aspect to this, this is so much deeper and better than the usual shallow action style stories in this death game genre. I also like how while it has plenty of gore and disturbing scenes, it's not HORROR genre, it's not scary to watch at all; can't after all make the viewer think and pick up its social commentray messages if they scare off the viewers from watching it lol.
Watched the first 2 eps, I like it so far, now continuing to binge....
So will it be based on the classic novel in any way? With such a title its impossible to not make the connection
Yes my first instinct when reading the title of this article was, "A kdrama remake of the classic novel?!"....but NO mention of it in the article?? hmm...

I also came to this after watching some e of Penthouse, in comparison this lacks drama....( that one has too much lol)
