no, the empress said "your girl cannot know why" before she died, so there is a conspiracy going on I think and the ML is taking bad wrap to achieve some higher goal. That is what I got from ep 1. Tbh, I would have rather that they did not show the empress killing herself up front because now I am looking for the possible reason for his deception.

She is raised in the palace as 9th prince and only a handful of people knows. Her childhood savior is now a regent and really mean one -he mocks her, verbally and emotionally abuses or blackmails her, and in the end forcefully kisses her while drugged. There is not much of a romance, just the gratitude obligation after he finds out she is really a girl. What is really annoyingly bad - eng subs. What is really annoyingly good - is ML's performance. He is so bad he is actually good. Actress in lead is doing exasperated scenes with skill.

The FL cross dressing in Dominion and Devotion was absolutely increadible. And the story about eunuch's dominance over emperor rather interesting and different from what this year is dishing out. I loved D&D show better than this!

there is one trailer that shows 3 versions of ML but not in a comedy/romance style (pre-amnesia king, night beast/warrior and daytime cutie), and more with the dark and cruel tone of the novel, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Worst case scenario - like Prisoner of Beauty or Glory - it will be standalone work loosely based on the novel and hopefully good in its own right. I mean Legend of Female General completely wiped out the reincarnation into another person part and look how well it worked!

I am impressed by HOW the plight of Sima clan people is shown. We had seen it numerous times in other dramas (I remember vividly the mines in Burning Flames and there are countless other examples of oppressing one group by another, but this is really different and sobering. Keeping people as both breeding livestock and cannibalistic source of power has chilling effect.

I have not seen the trailer but read the novel. There will be changes for sure so we will need to be patient with what the team will deliver. From what I remember >mature setting< on screen will include turning ML from a part-time kid (literally! 6 years old or so) into a part time teenager - no way that sexual interest of a man taking on a form of a child sleeping with FL will be shown in cdrama version.
