Exactly! For coupling purposes, Qi Yan and Q Yan Zhi are perfect for each other. They both calculate, adjust and then maneuver according to the game present. I hate that about both characters even though the emperor does it for the handed down purpose of ousting the eunuchs'. Cheng Ruo Yu does not calculate as each action is based on the purity of trust and loyalty. He married her sister and that, to me, is a done deal. The emperor married Q Yan Zhi but still loves Cheng Ruo Yu? Get over it because what is done cannot be erased. There is actions sacrificing the one for the many, but don't try to rope the sacrificed lover into an emotion affair. Not cool.
I get it’s the need of the plot but I am going to wait on this. Caught up till episode 44 without subs. It’s…
The actress who plays the older sister is really very good in her part but, that being said, the character and her calculation and maneuvering gets on my nerves. She knew her sister was in love with the emperor but oh well, I need him for my revenge game. That's when I wrote the character off.
I'm not sure if anyone would agree but it's been quite some time since I've watched a C-historical as continuously…
I love Asian dramas but usually skip over the first 2 - 5 episodes because the backstory is essentially filler material that I can catch up on. From the first episode of this one, I was glued to the screen. The writing is crisp and well paced, the acting is phenomenal but dear lord, Cheng Yi's portrayal of the emperor is done with such emotional subtlety that I'm blown away with every scene. I can understand about five words of Chinese but am currently stalking sites for the raw episodes. I haven't felt this way about a drama in a long time.
I googled it's native title with the episode I was looking for (aka" 与君歌25") and there's a site with the episodes raw. That's how desperate I am to watch any snippet of this drama because I understand about 5 Chinese words.
Only on Ep 6 (watching on Viki) and it does keep getting better but I feel like I missed something - Cheng Ruo…
I think Qi Yan is surrounded by people with an agenda 24/7. Cheng Ruo Yu enters his life and he recognizes someone who is without motive other than to protect him. I think it was just a refreshing change from the characters he has to interact with.

Thanks to your wonderful article, I now realize my love for the "slow burn" in dramas. "Do You Like Brahms?" and "Law School" were two of my all time favorites to watch over and over.
Love your article! I like this show because of the realness of the relationship and characters. Rather than having Jae Eon as one or two dimensional, he is shown as a fully fleshed person with good and bad traits. I've dated many guys similar to him in my teens and they drew in women like the proverbial moth to the flame. My friends who dated personalities like Jae Eon ended up hurt and rightly so. They were the chosen adventure of a one week / one night stand and then tossed away. They knew the person of interest was seeing others but believed they were the that would be the last love interest. There seems to be a right of passage for both genders to be involved with the one's like Jae Eon in order to appreciate the people who are not. I like the story deviation from the perfect protagonist and the heroine who changes life for his betterment. This is a story of owning your own story, claiming your own path and consequences.
