Except the end when he sent for the anti poison ingredients to be found, we didn't see much of his side. I'm not fishing for love scenes or such but they could do more to show it was two-sided.

Quite agree about the smoking, it's funny how in kdramas seldom you'd see a character smoking, if ever. But in the movies, everyone in every profession and situation smoke. I don't know what exactly you're confused about but to explain the situation, once Detective Jung (ML), who's a morally gray cop and does the case however he can, was after someone on the run and found his lover but she wouldn't tell anything so he'd poured swine pheromones on her to make her become horny and lose her mind.
His boss wanted to use the same method on Madam Kim but he found out and threatened him into releasing her.
There are 300+ chapters condensed into 12 episodes, so I'd assume they changed a lot of it but kept the skeleton…
I read some synopsis and reviews of the novel and seems it's a Real Historical People fanfiction about the last king of Southern Tang dynasty and a king of Northern Song king. Written them as lovers and the ending is quite sad.
Maybe they only got inspired by it and wrote a new drama with fictional countries and people.
Has anyone read the novel? I looked up the name and the one in "jjwxc.net" has different names and plot and also is marked a fanfiction not original. I'm confused about that.
