"I don't think he was a good person to begin with." - This is what I'm going with as well. There's a quote somewhere about adversity revealing character, and this is what I would say happened with SYR. Maybe if he sailed through life with no significant setbacks, he could've remained the decent husband and official he seemed to be on the surface. But he encounters PW and he lets go of everything (his own ideals, his promise to XFF's father that he would take care of her, etc.) and takes the easy road, and in turn reveals his true face. If not PW, it would've been some other difficulty that would pull the mask from his face.
I felt the conversation between SYR and PW at the end of ep 34 added another knot of complexity to the SYR character…
SYR: "From the day I killed her, aren't I already a shameless person? Your Highness forced me to become such a person, have you regretted it now?"
PW: "Why don't you dare to answer my question? Have you been lying to me?"
SYR: "I never thought of deceiving Your Highness. It's just that even I myself can't tell which words that are coming out of my mouth are true, and which are false."
We're here trying to figure out SYR and he hasn't figured his own self out … very telling.
I'm rewatching my favorite bits of the last two episodes, and the Emperor had to have been the one who had the most fun in episode 34. He was so obviously entertained by the blatant scheming going around him re: the SYR/XFF plot; it was hilarious just watching him watching all the schemers 😅
Candle aside, I absolutely loved the two episodes we got - so much great stuff in both. Now if only Youku would grant us the express, all will be well. I haven't given up hope 🤞🏽
Princess has him by the short and curlies, his mother nags repeatedly, and his sister whines incessantly. Yep,…
And that's actually the best part, 'cause it's self-inflicted from a guilty conscience. Really, when XFF is done with him, he should thank her for putting him out of his misery.
If they ask those questions. Most of them would have to face their guilt for abandoning her to her death. Don't…
So true, especially the father. I’m convinced he’s not 100% sure whether XFF is the real JL but he won’t dare pursue it, especially after all that has already transpired with his wife. The Luyang arc made me really sad for JL, thinking how much love and support she would have received from the Ye family.

SYR: "I never thought of deceiving Your Highness. It's just that even I myself can't tell which words that are coming out of my mouth are true, and which are false."

He must have a stupidity-spreading worm in his brain 🤷🏽♀️
