at first I thought that the old man was Gil Chae...
I did the same, unexcept 3 more times, just from the beginning scenes through the prison scenes. The writer and the director did an excellent job of ambiguity.
The height would suggest someone shorter who might be *******. The broad shoulders might suggest ********, It was alluded to a person of nobility such as ********. I wondered how closely the spoken word (hangukmal) was translated (other fansites said it HAD to be Ryang Eum because the doctor(?) told the other man the person behind the bars "chanted" the same thing over & over.
The ONLY thing I know for sure is this will end with episode 20 (or in the 21st) and (hopefully) all of our questions wil be answered.
Well, well, well, here I go.Let me tell you, let me tell you, let me tell you, I watched that opening scene with…
I'm delighted with you being able to express yourself after THAT episode. Gosh, I'm still tearing up and it's been at least an hour after watching. Long, yet concise description of the episode. Thank you. Oh, and thank you too for placing it under a spoiler tag. I love me some respectful people. Etta James would be thrilled, I'm sure. I really do hope PPIMA (great choice) butts her self into this, this time. The King. He's rage inducing. No wonder history has written him as one of the worst kings.
Just when I think it can't possibly get any darker, or impact our hearts more profounfly, the writer delivers a dagger straight to the center, leaving us bleeding all over the place for another day, then another week. My heart hurts.
Please be reminded to use the SPOILER button before posting your comment if it isn't a general comment. Others might not have seen ANY of My Dearest, or the newest episode. Be respectful of others. Don't take away their choice of whether to read a comment or not. They can then decide to REVEAL SPOILER or not.

Never have I ever watched a drama that provoked so many varying thoughts and opinions. I'll rewatch Ep 1. I heard that, but thought the guy asked because he wanted to know if he was a stranger or if he knew him personally. Like I said...rewatch incoming!!! Thank you, Park.
It is already so healing just looking at the still cuts.
More healing dramas are just what we need with the world in such turmoil. Dramas such as this are what drew me in in the first place, to get away from the world's messes.
Same, These two. I Usually love the dramas set against the backdrop of the sea. Or mountains. South Korea has such a diverse landscape in a relatively small area, it's wonderful to be able to "explore". While watching my eyes linger on the surroundings more so than the characters themselves, which definitely calls for a rewatch of the episode back to back since I miss so much.
Post My Dearest (part 1 and part 2), I can hear screenwriters lamenting Episode 17 far and wide across South Korea... "How will we ever top this? It's impossible, I tell you! Impossible!!!"

Their story started in 1637. The beach scene is in 1659. Twenty-two years would make the person in the prison around 52 years old, so not really an "old" man. We do have to factor in the times and 45 and above would be considered old. I'm convinced it's Jang Hyun in the prison and he's waiting on Gil Chae.
Is this sad and heartbreaking or is this uplifting? I don't know if I have the stomach for something sad or heartbreaking…
I agree with ally. Put it On Hold and don't read any of the comments especially those behind the Reveal Spoiler . My Dearest will break you, like it has for so many of us. It does have uplifting /inspiring moments intermingled throughout which do NOT make up for the overall despair against the backdrop of a nation in the midst of war. . It's exquisite, yes, but heart-wrenching.
