Merchant in those days belong to the lowest rank. People are classified according to your nobility and status.…
Again, I am not pertaining her kind deeds as being “smart” but by being merciful or compassionate. I already explained above how “smart” her character is. How strong she is. Even powerful in spite of the restrictions that a woman has to face in that era. Her lacking depth is not what I see in her character, the mere fact that she can forgive and tell that Princess a piece of her mind just shows her inner strength as a woman. If you see her character in a bias way, then you would treat her as one-dimensional but she is not. She has flaws but those make her more human. Her imperfections make the depth of her chracter more vividly resonating to women of today. It is not being perfect that a character is considered great. But how being flawed but still there is space for character growth. Many drama this year but Mudan’s character for me is the best among all the female leads character. And I stand by it.

When you forgive people all the time even those who hurt you, it is not being smart. It is called being merciful. It is Compassionate. Being “smart” could mean many things depending on the situation or people on how they define it. Even if in Tang dynasty, woman as you said has more freedom, still nobility or societal rankings matter.

She is a merchant actually, her family is a merchant clan. Mudan became a slave because of some circumstances. Even if ML came back, she already resolved her problem and save herself. I don’t know why you nitpick her character but then you don’t understand her character’s background. Actually, if you will analyze, she is not only smart and strong but can be powerful in her own ways. She can stand up for herself in that flower guild. This drama wants to closely depict the woman of Tang dynasty. And her showing these capabilities, is already considered a smart and strong-willed woman of that era. Adding the help of JCY just pushed the plot, of course this drama has romance aspect. In contrast with some drama, whose focal point is the love story and the male lead is always intervening to save the lady in damsel.

Mudan is definitely smart but not powerful. These are two different things. Don’t confuse these two. Mudan is smart for a woman of that era, having established her own business. At present times, she is called an entrepreneur. Second, she can sense danger and know how to solve problems. But, as explained here by some commentators, Mudan does not have power, thus her being smart has limit in some circumstances. That is when JCY steps in. I am talking about Season 1 first. The one where she was sold in the garrison if you haven’t watch closely display how both smart and strong she is. Because I haven’t fully watched the part 2 )I want to binge-watch it with good subtitles) So I am only pertaining to the events in part 1. So, I don’t get your comment. Mudan is a strong woman as she never backs down and can make sacrifices for others. Smart and strong but not powerful because she is not born as a noble.

Agreed. I feel the same. She is powerless
Agree, even in my country we still have our own traditional beliefs and practices that we need to follow.

this script offer all the bad cliches from dramaland..... :(oh please... some "quiet and happy" episodes... no?
Definitely not. I have watched other drama and those offer the bad cliches you have mentioned. This drama plot may be far from perfect but is well-written close to what reality in those days are.

Agreed. I feel the same. She is powerless
I explained already here the reasons. She is a smart woman but her status and gender hinder her to fully maneuver. Nobility plays a crucial part in the hierarchy. And society ranking is still prevelant in our modern times. That is why this drama is good because it does not only tackles ancient history but also touch some of the relevant issues of today.

Right? ML always bailing her out.
Edited: (Just woke up & I typed while my eyes closed) 😂 The male lead will only bail Mudan if it is out of strong necessity. If you have watched the show fervently, when she was put in garrison in season 1, Mudan prepared a plan to keep herself alive even before JCY came and rescued her. Moreover, her social status might impede her but she is smart enough to succeed in life and make her business flourished .

FL feels useless most of the time and the drama trying to potray her smart but in reality she doesn't feel that…
Merchant in those days belong to the lowest rank. People are classified according to your nobility and status. You should know that in your history class. Even slaves are classified. This drama tries to depict what woman are in that era. Even if you are a strong-willed woman, your status matters. Like Mudan, she belongs to the Merchant class and she is a woman. She even became a slave. I wonder if you are watching the drama closely because Mudan was being trampled by many because she is a merchant. However, because Mudan is smart, she is able to overcome all the challenges that came her way and made her peony business flourished. So, I don’t get the idea that she is not smart.

They are the outlaw, doing that and yet gone away unpunished. The current Emperor has no authority or power.😓
Modern gangsta or powerful politicians!!! This drama has really many scenarios that is prevalent in our times 😂 but at least these two are for the common good of the people.

I know you don’t watch teasers but I saw it in teasers as well as in tiktok. I hope I am correct though because I stopped watching around 13. I am just looking at the teasers to see when I can continue watching again. Waiting for when they can finally communicate what’s really going on and work together.

Things are resolved pretty quickly in this drama so I'm just enjoying the ride.
Yeah for a slow-burn genre and 56 episode length drama this pacing of resolving conflict is ok.
