I finished this yesterday, and I've been thinking ever since about what sets this one apart from The King's Affection (besides the obvious lack of fantasy). Both have 20 episodes, both are set in Joseon, both have a FL with a secret, both have action and romance... but I couldn't finish King's Affection. I stopped around episode 14. Meanwhile, I finished all episodes of AoS within a week.
I think the difference is the focus. Kings Affection shifted its focus to court intrigue, and if you're not into that (which I very much am not), then there was little else to keep your interest. There were characters I liked, but I wasn't invested in their relationships enough to stay.
Alchemy, on the other hand, presented us with multiple storylines and so many characters to care about. Not only that, but we were invested in the relationships–family, friendship, romance, this show had it all. I cared as much about Uk's friends and family as I did about him and Mu Doek. Even if the plot of the episode was unimportant for the bigger picture, I was still interested because I cared about the characters, and I was entertained. This show made me smile.
I think, ultimately, that's the sign of a great show. Perhaps Kings Affection will be more critically recognized, but when it comes to audience enjoyment, Alchemy of Souls (in my opinion) blew it out of the water (magical pun intended).
Ohhhhhh, that's good to know! Maybe I'll wait until the third season is announced / released before I watch this one. Maybe by then it will be available on Dramacool.
It's the major spoiler. I could tell you if you are ready 😉
Ahhhhhh, okay, so we find out what happens to her? That's good to know, I can stop being annoyed, haha. I'll just keep watching, but thanks for the offer.
I just started, and I don't think this is a spoiler because it happens in the first ten minutes, but..... did our hero just murder an innocent woman? Where did the blind girl's soul go? The assassin's dead body was there, so the blind girl didn't go into hers. OR, she did just in time for her new body to die. Either way, that is COLD.
This was fun. My only complaint about season 1 was that his love interest only appeared in the last 30 minutes. Then it... happened again????? It was cute that we got to see Kikuchi following him around without being noticed, but it would have been better if he was in the whole season, and we got to see their feelings progress.
Otherwise it was fun. I love seeing all those BL tropes. >< "I'm a B who will never L."
It's great if you want something dumb, and that's not a complaint. At least twice an episode I say, "This is so stupid" with a smile. It's very, very dumb, but it's cute and fluffy and they're all pretty.
I just watched the RamKing edit posted on YouTube (by an absolute HERO-thank you!!!), and I have to say: I did NOT know the series ends unresolved! hahaha It ended and I yelled, "WHAT????" I know a season 2 is unlikely at this point, but I still hope it happens. I need a happy ending for RamKing.
Even if we don't, though, we can pretty much assume they get together. King confessed, it's obvious Ram feels the same way - they kissed, and Ram admitted that he wasn't drunk. It's a pretty open and shut case, considering they're still living together. King literally says, "See you at the condo" as he gets in the truck, and then Ram sent the text saying he wasn't drunk. We can assume they go home and get together, so I'm not TOO disappointed about the lack of season 2 (though I still want it!).
Maybe it'll be like Until We Meet Again, where we're getting a spinoff for the second couple over 2 years after the actual show.
I didn't like either of them in the first 30 minutes of the show, but by the end of the first episode, I was hooked. Judging by the trailer and comments, I thought it would be non-stop drama and trauma, but the characters surprised me a few times by being mature and handling things well. Don't get me wrong, there was a LOT of drama, but I liked how it resolved (no one was just let off the hook, they had to make up for it, but they also weren't just cut off), and the ending was so sweet.
There were more sweet couple moments than I was expecting. I didn't watch the short drama, so I can't compare, but this one was addictive.
I haven't been this satisfied with a drama ending in a while. The last episode was such a beautiful gift. It's a bit stressful to get there, but I also enjoyed those episodes.
What stood out for me was the depth they gave all the characters. I cared about everyone (well... maybe not Tae Joon's mom, she was terrible). There were times I was giggle-clapping at the interactions. All the relationships - friendships, romance, family dynamics were done so well.
Overall a great watch! Makes me miss playing sports.

Thanks again!
