I really hate how Chinese writers so often include, and even sometimes romanticise aggressive, non-consensual romantic or sexual behaviour perpetrated on a female by a male. This especially annoys me when the character committing this offence is otherwise a green flag. In this drama, on at least three separate occasions, Li Wu forcibly "kissed" Cen Jin on her mouth against her will. I don't know what the law is in China, but in most countries, this is assault.
I enjoyed this drama a lot. If you're a fan of Noona / Jie Jie romances, then this is a must watch, because it is one of the best out there. I do want to have a whinge about something else in the drama however, which I'll put in the spoiler.
In the original drama the leads had a 7 year age gap with the real age gap between the actors being 12 years...a…
If you think Aff Taksaorn Paksukcharoen looks like she's in her mid 40s, then I'd suggest you need your eyes checked. But I agree that Nonkul Chanon Santinatornkul looks very young.
Thanks for your comment. I'll look forward to his apology and hopefully some character growth. I absolutely love the 2016 Li Wu who would do anything for Cen Jin, but I'm really disliking the arrogant, sulky, manipulative, disrespectful dick that Li Wu has become in 2024.
An enjoyable watch. I could make some minor criticisms about it, but I'm not going to because the positives far outweighed the negatives. A solid 9/10.
What conclusion did I jump to? I made an observation. Are you disputing that the kiss was non-consensual? He's not in a relationship with her, he didn't ask for permission, he was physically restraining her as she attempted to push him away. No matter what justification he had in his alcohol affected brain, and no matter how entitled he felt to act that way, the FACT is he kissed her non-consensually, and that is not OK. I'll be very disappointed in him if he doesn't sincerely apologise to her for his behaviour.
Ahhh β¦ Li Wu had to go and spoil it. His forceful, non-consensual kiss on Cen Jin's mouth in episode 3 caused my opinion of him (and the drama itself) to drop massively. I really hate the way Chinese writers so regularly try to romanticise non-consensual romantic or sexual behaviour. But I'll persist hoping Li Wu behaves a bit more like a decent human being going forward and doesn't give me any more reasons to drop this drama.
I've just started this drama, and have only watched 2 episodes, but I've enjoyed them as much as any drama I've ever watched. If it maintains its quality, this drama will likely end up one of my top 10 all time favourites. Let's hope I'm right.
I've seen comments criticising the kissing for being quite bland, and I would probably agree that it is bland. But, in my opinion, the chemistry between the leads is pure fire. Their flirty banter and the way they look at each other just oozes affection. I have no idea about the relationship status of either of the lead actors, but I find myself wondering if these two actors really are attracted to each other. Either that, or they're giving one hell of a performance.
A very good historical fantasy drama. The story was quite epic with some morally grey characters, rather than the usual clear 'goodies' and 'baddies' we often get. Sets and costumes were all amazing. The acting was quite good, if a little over the top at times. I quite liked Li Qin's performance - it's the first drama I've seen her in, and I would definitely like to see more of her work. I've seen better fight choreography in other dramas, but it's not a big deal. Even though the drama easily kept my attention for the full 38 episodes, it had less of the big, emotionally impactful scenes that the very best dramas in this genre have. But even so, it is still a must watch for anyone who enjoys Chinese historical fantasy dramas. A solid 9/10 in my opinion.
Fair enough, but if you like Noona romances, you should give this drama a watch, otherwise you're missing out on quite a good drama. I really enjoyed it a lot (Noona romance is also my favourite genre.) You can always drop it if you're not enjoying it. Thank you for mentioning Sniper Butterfly. I didn't have that drama on my radar, so I'll definitely be watching it soon. What are you favourite Noona dramas? You might know of some good ones I haven't seen yet. EDIT: I've now watched "Sniper Butterfly" and I loved it. My only complaint was that the ML on three occasions aggressively and non-consensually "kissed" the FL on the mouth. I don't know what the law is in China, but in western countries, this is assault.
A solid 9/10.
