It's definitely 40 episodes only. Apparently when the drama was first released on broadcast TV, it was split into 46 shorter episodes. I've asked MDL to change this so it stops confusing people, but they have a STUPID rule that says the number of episodes it was originally broadcast with is the number it must show on MDL.

This is a very good drama, but with so many episdoes (Part 1 & 2), I did find it got a bit draggy at times, especially towards the end. Also, with so many characters, at times I lost track of who is who. It's a drama that you need to commit to and concentrate on to fully appreciate.
I do struggle with Leo Wu's acting. I've seen him in a couple of dramas now, and it seems to me he has very limited range. He always seems to have the same expression, irrespective of the emotion he is experiencing.
If you do like epic Chinese historical dramas, then you should definitely watch this one.
My score is 8.5/10.

Of the unofficial streaming services that make this show available, I've noticed that https://asiaflix.net/ has superior English subtitles to https://kisskh.co/ or https://myasiantv.al/. Unfortunatley, https://asiaflix.net/ seems to take longer to upload episodes. As of right now, it only has episodes 1 & 2 available (and working). It has links to episodes 3 & 4, but those links don't currently work.

19 is not a minor in Korea today. Since 2023, Koreans have adopted international age - which is the age system all Westerners are familar with. Once a Korean has their 19th birthday, they are no longer a minor. Prior to 2023, Korean's used "Korean Age", which assigned an age of ONE at birth, and then added one more year for every Korean citizen on January 1st each year. This resulted in the absurd situation where if a baby was born on 31st December (assigned an age of 1 at birth), they then found themselves gaining another "year" of age the next day, which is January 1st. So a baby that is 2 days old could actually be 2 "years" old in Korean age. When the Korean government made this change in 2023, every Korean instantly become one or two years "younger". Under the "Korean Age" system, a person was a minor until they were 20. In older Korean Dramas, reaching a (Korean) age of 20 is often emphasised as becoming an adult, but in reality, these 20 year olds (in Korean Age) were actually 18 or 19 years old (in International Age). Hopefully that makes sense.

The quality of the show has diminshed with the erasure of Ri-Won. They've had to pad the show with excessively long (and not particularly interesting) conversations to replace the cut Ri-Won scenes. Also, Ri-Won was an interesting housemate, so we lose her input, and any scenes in which she played a significant role. I'm still going to watch the show and enjoy it as best as I can, but sadly it will be an inferior show to what it could have been.
I really don't understand this Korean mentality of trying to erase a person because of previous misdeeds. Ironically, it has the opposite effect of what I'm assuming is intended. It highlights the person and their previous behaviours, rather than hiding or obscuring it all.

There is this thing in called objective truth. That is, something is true (or not) independent of anyone's opinion, including yours. It is objectively true that a 19 year old person is an adult, both legally and biologically. A young ADULT is still an ADULT. An ADULT with limited life experience is still an ADULT. You may believe (possibly correctly) that two people are unsuited to each other because of a difference in age or life experience or religious beliefs or something else, BUT an ADULT remains an ADULT irrespective of your assessment of their suitability to be in a relationship with someone.

These are some actions by Ling Xiao that were problematic and annoyed me.

1.) Ling Xiao kissing Li Jian Jian while she slept, and before they were a couple was inappropriate and creepy.

2.) Ling Xiao continually pressuring Li Jian Jian to start dating him, when she clearly indicated that she needed time to consider his confession was disrespectful and selfish. He simply ignores her feelings and only concerns himself with what HE wants.

3.) Ling Xiao's non-consensual kiss on Li Jian Jian's mouth, again BEFORE they are a couple, as he held onto her face to prevent her from moving was NOT OK. This again showed disrespect towards Li Jian Jian, completely ignoring her feelings and focussing only on what he wants. His little smirk as she ran out of the apartment embarrassed, clearly indicates that he doesn't believe he did anything wrong.

4.) Ling Xiao forcefully grabs Li Jian Jian's face, and clamps it firmly with his hands to restrain her, and then aggressively kisses her mouth in front of his mother. Even though they were a couple by this time, this AGAIN demonstrates flagrant disrespect for Li Nian Nian. She was obviously extremely uncomfortable in this situation, but Ling Xiao AGAIN didn't care about her feelings. He only cared about performing in front of his mother.

For me, these red flag actions significantly diminish Ling Xiao as a character.

A really good drama. Well acted and very thought provoking. I really liked Tu Song Yan as Li Hai Chao - he stole the show for me. I enjoyed the story, and I thought it realistically showed the complexity of people's lives. I liked the characters' relationships that we saw develop over time, and the growth that individuals experienced. There were a LOT of evil mothers in this drama, but I appreciated the fact that most of them (eventually) recognised the error of their ways and made at least some effort to redeem themselves.
There were a few things I didn't quite like. Personally I would have liked to have seen more episodes while they were still in school. For me, there were too many episodes when they were adults, and I found it sometimes got a bit draggy in some of those episodes. I also think they could have wrapped up some of the side plots better, and I would have enjoyed a bigger payoff when the plagiarist was outed. Lastly, I thought the chemistry between Li Jian Jian and Ling Xiao was quite bland. They seemed more like brother and sister than two lovers.
I do want to have one whinge about one more thing that I really didn't like at all. It is in the spoiler.
Overall an excellent drama.
9/10
I'm going to watch the Korean remake now and compare the two.
EDIT: I've just finished the Korean remake, and I actually enjoyed it more than this, even though I scored both dramas as 9/10. The Korean version "fixed" some of the problems with the Chinese version, such as reducing the length of the drama so it never got draggy, and it also removed the creepy, non-concensual behaviours of Ling Xiao.

Young ADULTS aren't kids - they're young ADULTS. ADULTS with little life experience aren't kids, they are ADULTS with little life experience. Even immature ADULTS aren't kids, they are immature ADULTS. Your obsession with redefining an ADULT as a kid by some arbitary set of criterai that you just make up is weird. ADULTS are ADULTS irrespective of their life experience, maturity, intelligence, appearance etc. etc.
Also, how have you concluded I'm "fat". I'm genuinely curious. But my point is that if the age gap bothers you, which it very clearly does, then why would you choose to watch the show that bothers you? Obviously you can watch it if you want to, but why would you choose to if you get annoyed by it?

She supposively was 19 at the time of filming. Obviously I have no way of confirming this, but for the sake of argument, I'll assume it is true. A 19 year old woman is an ADULT. I understand that some people have problems with age gaps in relationships. You only need to read through the comments on the MDL page of age gap romance dramas to find criticisms.
But I disagree with these people. In my opinion, if two ADULTS want to date, then that is their business. The housemates guessed her age to be about 23-24 years, and although I've only seen the first two episodes (as I type this), from her interactions in conversations, Han Gyul seems more thoughtful that most of the others, and at the very least, as mature as them. Young adults are NOT children. An age gap does NOT mean a relationship must be abusive or exploitative. But if anyone finds it uncomforatable watching two ADULTS who have an age gap from interacting with each other, then just don't watch this show.

He was 20 when he filmed this. If you don't like age gap romance dramas, then why do you watch them? Surely you can see how stupid that is - sitting through 41 episodes of a drama you know you won't like due to the age gap, and then give it a low score and comment about how "creepy" the age gap was ... but YOU CHOSE to watch it knowing it had an age gap that you don't like. No one is forcing you to watch dramas that conflict with your personal tastes and preferences.

It really is a very good drama. Why not start watching it, and if after a handful of episodes you aren't feeling it, then just drop it and watch something else. That MDL score of (currently) 8.7 is there for a reason.

Quite entertaining. Funny in places and good action scenes. However, I don't think it is quite deserving of its (current) MDL score of 8.9 in my opinion. I'm giving it an 8/10.
