Not gonna watch any of these before fully subbbed. I'm fed up with Japanese dramas being dropped by subbers halfway through. I love them though, so I hope to see a handful of good ones by the end of the year...
I usually have a lot of respect for subbers, ‘cause they do us a great service. Being patient is part of that… I get that people are busy living their life too and waiting a little bit is only fair…. But now I'm fed up. Half subbed is worse than not subbed at all. Please keep your hands off a drama if you don’t intend to finish it… so someone else can pick it up and do a good job.
On the question whether this drama would have worked better without the romance…
No it wouldn't... because the tension in the drama between the real romance and the fake affair suggested by bystanders would be absent. That tension drives the story forward.
As for how appropriate the real romance is… ... I'd suggest it starts out more like a recognition between two people loving the same thing. It’s easy for a highschooler to confuse what exactly he loves… the math… the teacher… the fact that he’s recognized back. The teacher, although she is a little oblivious in her dealings with the student, takes a step back when she wakes up to his feelings. She lets nothing untoward happen. It’s only through their “journey” that Seung Yoo becomes mature in his love, both in age and in his knowledge of what love really means… and Yoon Soo can accept love, both from her former student as from her father.
The romance is present, slightly and utterly superfluous. It would have worked better without!

For me this should still be in the romance genre category. It's a much more realistic portrayal of love and how…
This is the only review people need to read, because it's spot on about the romance. Thank you also for mentioning the way the other characters are portrayed. Completely agree (as an example: the little drinking scene with Han Myeong Jin). If you like a well built story about human hubris and redemption... please give it a shot!
I'm so glad I chose to watch this drama. Political drama at its best. Every detail of the story was so carefully set up. The love between the main characters was always there but it was the reason for their persistence in... well... getting their life back really. It was never the main purpose of the plot. And what a pay off in the last two episodes. Brilliantly played. Figuratively in the story... and literally by the actors. Who knew math could be so interesting! Deserves way more than an 8.0!!
This drama is one of the best of 2021. If you are in doubt whether to watch this or not because of the older woman/younger man tag... or because some comments of people who didn't stick with it... don't doubt. The payoff is great! Episode 15 had me on the edge of my seat. Can't wait 'till tomorrow/sad to see it go...
