"The bigger thematic ideas get lost as you sense the actual writer struggling every bit as much as her cartoonist antihero to give her work an ending. And unfortunately, just like him, she can’t seal the deal" Can't agree more! This drama was such a waste of time to me.
I skipped from ep 5 to 13 and it honestly feels like I missed nothing! I also feel would have been a better story…
While I do agree the romance isn't selling itself to me here and I'm not in for the romance at all (neither of the couples except for Grim Reaper & Goblin). But that is the exact reason why I find this drama good, because it has never happened before that I'd enjoy a Kim Eun Sook's drama regardless of the "romance". Her dramas only offered romance so if someone would've told me that I'd be enjoying a KES drama while disregarding the romance I would have laughed... after The Heirs and DoTS I just thought this writer won't buy her way back to me again but Goblin is her way back indeed. She promised something different and she so far has kept her promise, it has different vibes while keeping her cheesy elements intact and still being a rom-com with slight melo. It's not a masterpiece, it has draggy moments and filler eps and I'm not into the romance at all but I love the "efforts" spent on it in an attempt to make it different in every way possible even the atmosphere. I appreciate it and I appreciate how fun and interesting the characters are. Goblin is as deep as the writer can go without going astray from her typical writing style.
If you skipped all those eps, then it's pretty obvious that it's not your cup of tea there is no point in watching something you don't enjoy, well at least for me. This is just my view and to each his/her own :)
This drama got the highest Episode Ratings among all OCN dramas! Very well deserved, that start was so raw! I hope it can maintain this level till the end.
I really liked this show and feel it is under-appreciated as I rarely hear anyone mention it. Btw, that is a powerful…
Thank you for reading it my friend, and leaving comment I really appreciate it :)
Indeed this drama is one of the buried dramas here on MDL and it’s not surprising because it’s always the case here on MDL sadly…
Moreover if one would judge the drama based on the comment section, reviews and the overall rating, they’d definitely run away from it… I wasn’t happy with all the negative feedback when it came out the first time because it put me off and now I’m even more upset after actually watching it. It certainly does not deserve all that negativity, I understand that people like different things and we have different opinions but sometimes I can’t help but wonder why dramas here on MDL are either LOVED strongly or HATED strongly. Reviews are either all 10s or all 6s.
In this case I wonder what was it that made this drama so hateful and disappointing? Am I watching something different than what everyone else have watched? The majority had complaints about it and I’ve read them all but still can’t understand what is the “sin” that this drama have committed for all that negativity. I understand the complaints about the ending (although I’m one who was fine with it). But calling this drama “dead” why? Because it had slow paced calm atmosphere? Because the story line despite being sad wasn’t heavy and doesn’t try to suck your energy? Does every revenge melodrama out there has to be over dramatic, restless, chaotic, energy sucking, heavy, filled with overload crying scenes or violent scenes to be “alive”? I don’t mind the differences in opinions because it doesn’t affect mine I’m just wondering what was so wrong here? When the majority dislike something can’t help but wonder (although it’s always the case with me liking something the rest of the world hates and disliking something the rest of the world loves lol xD). I was comfortable while watching this drama, it wasn’t trying to be over the top or play the emotion game. This writer is just my type when it comes to melodramas, as I've loved all her dramas especially The Devil. Her style in revenge dramas is exactly what I love, very smart, very detailed and leaves an impact without trying too hard.
This drama is haunting me since the time it's aired. And your review is bringing it closer to the CW list.…
It is unfortunate that this drama hasn't received much love and even more sad that it's the reason KNG at some point lost confidence in himself... I was put off by all that when it aired the first time and my longing and yearning for KNG after he was discharged made me kind of scared of starting this with all the negative feedback I saw. However, I always learn again and again that just because many people didn't appreciate something doesn't mean I won't as well.
It's been haunting me since then and I'm so glad I finally found the time and the right mood to watch it. At the same time I'm very sad because I have nothing else for KNG to satisfy my craving while he is away from dramaland... :(
You're going through minor drama slump and it's perfectly normally my dear Betty, don't push yourself to watch anything even the ones you are currently watching. The whole point of watching dramas is the enjoyment and entertainment. If it's not giving you this at the moment then there is no need to push yourself to watch. Wait until you can enjoy them again :)
I hope this passes soon <3 and I hope you will find place for Shark on your list, I personally loved it :)
Such a truthful review! Up to today I never found any roles better played by all the main characters as they portrayed…
Thank you Betty <33
Indeed it was such a well written, strong, astonishing, exquisite sageuk that I'm very happy to have the chance to watch. QSD is legendary and will forever keep its reputation secured!
This one won my heart over the Chinese version, and I'm someone who would always appreciate the original more! So glad I gave it a chance. K version had more "life" than the C version.
Wonderful review chingu! I'm planning to start NiF in the New Year. I was feeling a little hesitant about…
Thanks for reading Winnie! I was worried about the length too since it's a C drama and my first historical one, but just get past the first 10 eps and you won't be able to stop :)
It's is really worth investing every minute! I hope you'll enjoy the journey ^^
My number one drama and my number one character: Mei Changsu! ❤❤❤ I am glad you loved it too, because this…
It deserves to be your No.1 and deserves to be watched by the entire world! Because it's just too precious! Mei Changsu ❤
So GLAD the reviews system is working now, I worked hard for this review probably one of the hardest reviews I had to write considering how smart the show is :D
Thank you for writing this article! Finally an appreciative article for this wonderful talented actor!
My Girl is his breakthrough drama so it's more qualified to be mentioned as the first and on top, old drama watchers could never forget this one :D Seen & Loved all his dramas <33
