What does "black comedy" mean?
It's basically a genre that depicts tragic or distressing events in a comedic way. So while the topic itself is heavy, the characters and situations handle it in humorous ways.

Well, my mind is blown! Jian and Minhye are two of the strongest female leads I've seen. I'm very impressed. I hope to see more writing like this! Jinman and Honda are kings. Honda, the world doesn't deserve you! Please let there be a season 2. This story is far from over! Lee Dong Wook was everything, truly flawless. I give this drama 10/10!

"Only the weak bark. The strong don't. You must become strong. Whatever makes you scared, keep your eyes open and face it." Jeong Jinman

I'm only 3 episodes in and I'm HOOKED. LDW continues to be brilliant. Keep feeding us, sir. Thrillers look good on you. Romance? We don't know her anymore! We've far exceeded romance. LDW shines in dark dramas.

Jinman needs to do a TedTalk. I'm legit taking notes on facing fear. That quote was a whole word!

Bruh, i am absolutely gagged!! How the hell is Lee Dong Wook fking 42 and doing all these stunts? Nevermind that,…
You better say that again!!! LDW SHINES in dark roles! I don't need to see him sweep another woman off her feet. He brings beauty to grit. Strangers from Hell is a cinematic masterpiece. It deserved to sweep all the awards. He played Moon Jo so well that people were actually too afraid to finish it and feared HIM!
This is definitely in my top 5! I wouldn't change a thing. Tens across the board! The ending was appropriate. All things considered, it made the most sense and honored the desires of both characters. I found it to be realistic. After the immense trauma the original Yi Heon endured both at home and school, there was no place he felt safe. He had reached his limit, and seeing Deuk Pal turn his lemons into lemonade and improve his life was not going to inspire him to continue living. Ending it all is NEVER the answer, but that's the unfortunate choice Yi Heon made because he was isolated and had no support system to help resolve the bullying and his home situation. He was repeatedly gaslit and abused.

After all Yi Heon experienced, he wouldn't come back renewed without a miraculous healing. The amount of trauma he sustained would require great intention on his part to receive treatment and do the healing work, in addition to managing his new life designed for an outgoing person. I believe he knew that and had no more energy to fight another day.

Deuk Pal had the personality, maturity, support, and life skills to face Yi Heon's hardships head-on and resolve Yi Heon's troubles. He also had the lost dream of being well-educated and passed away unexpectedly. Deuk Pal had much more life left in him and made the people around him better as an influential leader.

I truly empathize with Yi Heon. I wish he could've found the passion to live again and do things differently the second time around. However, his short life crushed his spirit. He made peace with the fact that his physical form lived vibrantly with Deuk Pal's soul and that despite everything Deuk Pal fixed, Yi Heon didn't have the motivation to live as enthusiastically. His soul was ready to rest, and now he could rest peacefully with no more regrets.

Obviously, in a perfect world, I wanted Yi Heon to come back to his body with a renewed vigor and pick up where Deuk Pal left off. Of course, he's a different person, but my hope would be that he'd adopt Deuk Pal's daily routine (health, boxing, and study) and develop a sense of purpose and self-esteem. However, this felt too idealistic as he was too close to everything, such as his mother's addiction. It would be quite triggering managing his mother's recovery, and his own, and balancing new relationships and school. On the other side, I'd hope Deuk Pal's body somehow got restored and he returned to his old life, but that'd be a huge plot hole since he was cremated!

Wow, this may look like a youth comedy, but this drama depicts the fragility of life and the impact (both negative and positive) people can have on others. Trauma doesn't discriminate. This drama also shows how with the right perspective, patience, and support, a life can change for the better. Lastly, it reminds us that we are our best advocate! We must value ourselves, and others, and speak up, even when it's scary. This is a very simplified conclusion, but I've written enough!
I remember first seeing Yoon Chan Young in Still 17 and being so impressed. I'm so happy for him getting all these lead roles. He's excellent in this drama, as expected! Watching this definitely scratches the lingering itch for more justice left behind by the Glory and Again My Life.

Yi Heon 2.0's training plan has motivated me to put down the candy and get back on the wagon. I wasn't expecting that lol.

I agree. He had the most chemistry and time invested with Han Mi. Hee Ah felt like an afterthought to wrap up…
Thank you! I'll add all your recs to my watchlist. I appreciate your help!

Exactly! I really appreciated how secure he was about it. Are there any other good dramas out there with similar lead characters? I enjoy romance plots, but it's also delightful seeing characters who are content and live fulfilling lives in other ways. So far, Reborn Rich is another one I've found!

A true favorite. I came back to rewatch and it's just as good as I remember. However, Daon is more annoying this time around with his people pleasing, being everywhere at once, and inserting himself in Shinwoo's business lol.

I LOVE Nanao, Nagata Takato, Shiono Akihisa, and offbeat dramas, so I'm in! It's lovely seeing Nanao play a character outside of the "chic, icy woman" roles she normally takes. Akihisa and Takato can play anyone, so it's always a treat to see the wide range of roles they takes on. Akihisa is really cute in this drama.

I know FL is over the top, but I honestly consider this to be a relatable satire about those who many of us have worked with that do the absolute bare minimum but skate by on confidence, excellent interpersonal skills, and appearing engaged. If you're a stressed or sensitive worker or an overachiever, I feel like we can learn a thing or two from FL about caring less (of course not being careless) and not taking work personally. When the chief got mad at her for messing up print copies, she didn't even notice and had no recollection of anything when ML asked about it.🤣 Homegirl is completely unaffected by the workplace!

Honestly, all these characters exist in the real world workplace, just exaggerated. I'm enjoying this drama so far!

Nanao playing a clumsy woman? That's very different from her other regular roles.. I'll have to see it.
That's the draw for me too. She's my favorite and tends to play icy characters, so it's always nice to see her take on roles outside that scope!

I love the business aspect of this drama! It's the minor things that I can live without.

Past Min Young is too much. Her insecurities have her jumping to conclusions. "Do Jun" never said they were dating, so the library meltdown was uncalled for. This one-sided "are we/aren't" we is a distraction from the main plot. Min Young feels forced into the story. Romance makes zero sense in this context. I also feel like Min Young doesn't match Do Jun. Her personality is dry and their chemistry is white paint on a white wall in a white house, i.e. plain! Hyun Woo was turned off by marriage and fatherhood in the present due to family trauma, so it doesn't make sense for him to suddenly be interested in the past as Do Jun. He's too busy anyway.

How did Min Young know that flower basket was bugged?

I enjoy those moments of connection between Do Jun and Grandpa. Even though Grandpa is a psychopath, I like it when he's all "hey, twin!" when Do Jun's business acumen impresses him.

I don't know how Grandpa is allowing Dong Ki to work at Soonyang and Daeyoung. He's insider trading and yet they keep him involved with Soonyang business. Make it make sense!

Since Hyun Woo still exists in the past, whose soul is inside him while his soul occupies Do Jun? I doubt they'll ever explain it.

They really should've casted younger actors for the past. They look thr exact same age and it's a nearly 30 year difference. Hyun Min is the opposite. She doesn't look old enough in the present if she was in her 20s in 1996. SJK is a vampire, so he looked college age in the past.

I'm craving glaze donuts lol.

Business formal corporation, corruption, revenge, diabolical grandfather, thrills, chills, and Song Joong Ki's acting and screen presence? Say no more. I'm taking the plunge despite the warnings about the potholes and ending. Again My Life was excellent but had plot holes and a weak ending, and I still loved it. I'll take my chances!

This drama would've been more raw and realistic, if they let mr.gu died due to alcoholic addiction as it's side…
To be honest, I was wondering where they planned to take Mr. Gu. He appeared to be a high-functioning alcoholic and FL oddly pursued him... The direction is strange. Love healing alcoholism is a concerning trope. Stats show alcoholism is a national issue but, the culture normalizes heavy drinking. Does he get help in the end or do they sanitize it as "he's had a hard life and he enjoys a drink to relax?"
On My Liberation Notes Oct 24, 2024
I started this drama for my favorite, Lee Min Ki, while it was airing. It has the same melodramatic air as dramas like My Mister and Something in the Rain. 2022 was quite the year for Asian dramas and I paused it for something else. Two years later, I believe I'm ready to pick it up again since there's a dry spell with the newer dramas.

I'll always have a revisionist's view of this drama lol. The version I watched was a heart-racing, complex noona romance jam-packed with drama, action, and suspense! A story of enemies finding themselves locked in a passionate love story, working together against corruption and betrayal and healing from from past heartbreak. Yoojin, a fierce boss babe, and her faithful warrior, Jeha, the greatest couple to have ever been. Together, they take back what's Yoojin's and build an empire. Anna who? In my Mariah Carey voice, "I don't know her." Those first five episodes really looked like this would be our plotline, and that's the story these two characters deserved. Their chemistry was FIRE!!! The push and pull, the tension and surrender! Anna wasn't even a main character! She came out of nowhere and had no personality outside of being cute. She really was just a background character who stumbled into the main plot. It had to be said.

Yes, i love Hyun woosung ( Doctor K).. he is very underrated, so will have being a 2nd bigger villain here with…
Indeed! He was fabulous. I hope to see him get lead roles. I sense his versatility. With his handsome charm, he'd be wonderful in the more sophisticated romance dramas (not that silly stuff with the tropes), but he also suits action, thriller, and crime genres too. Nowadays, a small group of actors get casted in lead roles. It would be lovely to see a fresh face like his as the lead.
On My Name Is Loh Kiwan Oct 6, 2024
Title My Name Is Loh Kiwan Spoiler
I always enjoy Song Joon Ki's work. The plot was an interesting take on the North Korean detector plot. Although I liked Kiwan and Marie, I wish Marie had a different backstory. Instead of being part of the underworld and dabbling in drug abuse, she could've had that same look and just been a normal, law-abiding woman on the art scene. She could've been someone volunteering at the refugee shelter or an immigration activist and met Kiwan by osmosis. They become friends and she introduces him to her diverse group of friends. Over time, Kiwan finds himself becoming part of a community and develops a "family of choice" with his new friends. He works, learns the language, and begins building his life. The romance could then be a subplot while the focus remains on him healing and building a new life.

That's my rewrite, but I still enjoyed the movie for what it was! I still don't understand why Kiwan went all the way to Belgium and had to fight for permanent residency when he could've taken a short flight to South Korea and received automatic citizenship and housing. I feel like he suffered more for no reason. I don't know if this was just Netflix being extra and going for a dark Emily in Paris vibe. Also, I sigh at how Westerners are portrayed in Korean content: Wild, violent, and promiscuous. It never fails. Nothing beats that American character in Heirs mistaking that bean powder for cocaine and stealing it.😮‍💨
