Most people in Korea don’t come out it’s not really a culture there, so I don’t think it’ll happen and…
Exactly this! I'd love to see a coming out storyline that touches on celebrity, and after watching the amazing second season, I'm convinced that the writers, actors and director can pull it off. And if such a story manages to convince some of the native viewers that people being LGBTQ+ is ok, even better.
A couple of weeks ago, I still believed that I would never love a Korean BL, but then I watched Semantic Error and it's almost unbelievable how much this show has taken over my brain! I just rewatched it this weekend, and I don't know how to describe it, but watching the show just makes me so happy! I feel like my blood is carbonated when I see the guys go from trying to get a rise out of each other, to realising that they actually WANT to be together because they enjoy fighting, to finally realising that they're in love and then having to navigate this new situation in their respective ways. I think this is one of the best "opposite attracts" romantic comedies in BL, and honestly it absolutely can hold its own in comparison to non-BL opposite attracts-themed shows as well.
I think the main reason for success is that the show is just so much fun, and as a viewer you can truly feel how fun the cast and crew had during filming. The cast are so comfortable together, and beside the main couple, I love the rivalry between Jae Young and Ji Hye – the way she shoots daggers at him with her eyes and he just keeps SMIRKING at her every time he sees her because he knows he's winning had me in stitches! I'm also a huge fan of Jae Young's friendship with his designer friend Yu Na – two chaotic bisexuals who just wants to make the world prettier!
It's such a perfect, cozy show to watch in the autumn, since it's autumn in the story as well. I'm sure I'll be rewatching Semantic Error many times in the years to come!
Wow, I was NOT expecting to love season 2 as much as I did, because I thought the first season was utterly forgettable. I rewatched s1 on a whim and liked it a bit more the second time around (even upped my rating of the drama on this site slightly), so I dove straight into season 2 and COULDN'T STOP WATCHING! Everything was way better in this season: acting, production, writing, direction, pacing, locations, visual design, editing, and so on.
I've rarely seen heartbreak, relationship struggles and mental health issues portrayed so real and raw in a BL. If you're like me and didn't quite vibe with the first season, I'd recommend watching the second season. It's everything the first season wasn't, and I already know I'll return to watch it again sooner rather than later.
If they ever do a s3 or movie, I'd love for them to do a story about the guys coming out (by mistake or on purpose) and be a couple officially. After seeing how wonderfully the show managed to portray multiple difficult topics in s2, I'm sure they'd be able to handle all the nuances of how the guys would be affected, and how people around them would react, etc.
I wanted to wait for series to be released so I could binge watch. From time to time I came here and read comments,…
If you love the girls that were matched, I recommend checking out Bad Buddy! Those two actresses play major supporting roles in that drama and have a storyline of their own interwoven with the main story. Actually, most of the couples that have showed up in Vice Versa so far are callbacks to previous LGBTQ+ dramas.
About this drama, the problem isn't the acting. Even the most seasoned actor(s) would have trouble selling this…
There's so many problems with this drama. I came into it expecting and wanting to love it. I thought Jimmy was great in BB and was curious about Sea and kind of digging their chemistry in ep 1. But the merit of those two can't compensate for the lacklustre writing, worldbuilding, direction, pacing and so on. I struggle to think of a more lacklustre production, even within BL standards. Every comment I see praising the cinematography makes me feel like it's _I_ who ended up in an alternative universe, because rarely have I seen a show with such an interesting setup but such uninspired execution. And the characterisation and plot issues have already been justly and well criticised by you and other posters here, so I won't rehash it, I'll just say I agree completely with the most common sentiments in this regard.
Regarding the acting, I disagree that it's bad, and I don't see how Sea is any better than Jimmy. I think there…
Your thoughts pretty much echo mine, but I didn't even make it through episode 4. I caught up on ep 1–3 last week, but felt zero enthusiasm for the continuation. I wish I could write more comments to your spot-on analysis, but one of my hands is hurt so I'll just say that I agree with your criticism and only add that the "alternative universe" angle is so underutilized that it hurts my soul! Is see-through paper and different hand gestures truly the best they could come up with...? That's so sad...😬
watching this series on youtube is so strange because i'm not feeling their chemistry at all. but then i look…
Me too, was seriously puzzled by the glowing comments, which is why in smack in the middle of ep 4 I got bored and decided to have a look here to see if I'm the only one underwhelmed. Glad to see a lot of good discussion over here about the shortcomings of the drama. I had high hopes, and unfortunately it didn't deliver. But reading some good discussions about why helps mitigate my disappointment.
I watched Blue of Winter because I loved the short movie from the same production company (I guess? It was on the same youtube channel.) Unfortunately, unlike the clever short movie, this series had a lot of writing and storytelling issues.
First of all, the story begins like a "comic trailer", where the premise of the story and its characters are introduced through static comic art being filmed. But that creates the problem where it's hard for the viewer to know which character did what once they're reintroduced as played by actors, since there's no visual similarity between the comic book art and the drama.
The story then dives into a weirdly emotionless love triangle, and the story is riddled with (imo) negative BL tropes: evil girlfriends, breaking up for no reason, unnecessary misunderstandings because of lack of communication, time skips, etc etc. I did finish the drama because it's so short, but afterwards I didn't feel like it was time well spent.
Not recommended unless you're looking to pass time. I will however keep an eye on what they create next, since their previous work had a lot of promise.
While this show more or less lost me in the latter third of the show due to choppy writing and characterisation, I am glad that it was made because on its better moments, it had a lot of interesting things to say despite some obvious restrictions (forced self censorship), looked great visually (excellent cinematography), and let some very talented actors show off their action chops. Gun lived up to my high expectations, Off surprised me majorly with his leveled up acting and the supporting cast acted the hell out of their roles, even if some of them (Mond) got stuck with some embarrassingly badly written story lines.
My top moment is the protests and spontaneous pride march in the middle of the series, a moment that felt revolutionary for the BL genre and hopefully is a sign of change to come for the industry as a whole in regards to diversity and inclusion of real issues within at least some narratives.
I remain curious how Not Me would have turned out if the creative team had full creative liberty and some more solid writing in the shaky middle third of the show. I was already a fan of the director and look forward to see what she might create if she decides to work in the BL genre again.
He She It - Check out this mini series with them - I'll be curious about your opinion :)
It's actually through He She It that I found out about Ingredients! I liked it! It's interesting to see an indie BL, and I like how it managed to tell a very dark and interesting story in such a short time.
Oh yes, clearly GMM kind of underestimated how great Bad Buddy can be, when we viewers can immediately see how…
I'd definitely be up for a prequel, as we really didn't get to see much of Pat and Pran's high school years and the way they had to keep hiding their friendship from their parents, as well as keeping the whole rivalry fraud up. They could play up the whole thing with them falling for each other as well and Pran hiding his feelings while Pat remains oblivious to his and Pran's feelings.
Oh yes, clearly GMM kind of underestimated how great Bad Buddy can be, when we viewers can immediately see how…
Hm. I'm not sure I'm feeling the idea of an entire sequel myself, since the story feels done to me. But if they go for it, I hope they really have a good story to tell, instead of just milking it. I'm more positive towards the idea of a special episode or even better, a movie to cap it off. But I would be ok even if they decided to leave it as is.
I'd love to see Ohm and Nanon get to flex their acting muscles with something challenging and new. They need to get their own "Manner of Death" so to speak.
While I haven't been following Bright and Win myself, I did check out the first couple of episodes of F4 and wow, that budget is something else compared to the regular GMMTV series! I also balked a bit at the amount of series they're showing up in for GMMTV's 2022 lineup. Happy for their fans though! Just not something I'll be checking out.
Oh yes, clearly GMM kind of underestimated how great Bad Buddy can be, when we viewers can immediately see how…
I'm also expecting some sort of continuation of the Bad Buddy story going forward and agree that if it will happen, then they will already be in talks. We might see something late this year as you speculate, if GMMTV wants to capture the current hype. Though my money is on early 2023, especially since Nanon has 2 full series, the VV guest role and that movie on his plate for 2022 already, Aof has Moonlight chicken and Ohm his graduation and 10 years Ticket – i.e. quite a lot of schedules to consider. But if it's a smaller project like a special episode, perhaps they can squeeze it in somewhere.
About GMMTV overlooking BB's potential – which they definitely did big time – I think they underestimated how hungry the audience was for something different that breaks the norm of BL drama. And I'm also thinking that they vastly underestimated how good Ohm and Nanon could be when they act against each other. We've all heard that the Thai audience wasn't thrilled about them pairing up for various reasons, so people at GMMTV probably looked at the budget for PR and decided not to throw more money after a supposedly "bad" or at least uncertain investment.
If there's something new made from Bad Buddy, what are you hoping to see? :)
Were OhmNanon to star as leads in a future project, what kind of a new genre do you think they'd be believable…
Something darker would be interesting and I'm sure they could pull it off. Horror, thriller, crime, that kind of direction, especially once they get a bit older. I'm not personally a fan of gore and splatter, so I'd prefer something tense and creepy/scary. Think The Haunting of Hill House, that kind of stuff.
Soonvijarn reaction videos for Bad Buddy are always great, and miss having them. I like Jennie Panhan's ones a…
No need to worry, agreed, but I would like to see their sacrifice get recognised. Getting a video close to 500k views would have been great for the growth of their channel.
Been pondering how GMMTV might want to utilise Ohm and Nanon's growing popularity going forward, and what kind of projects the actors themselves might enjoy doing together, as I believe both factors will play into where we get to see them next.
We're already going to see Ohm and Nanon in guest roles in Vice Versa this year, and they're also both casted in the upcoming movie My Precious, where Nanon plays the lead with Ohm (and Chimon) as his friend/romantic rival.
Since Bad Buddy only started gaining real traction about a week or so before GMMTV announced their 2022 lineup (meaning that those announcements had been in the work for some time, including negotiations, casting and filming concept trailers), they didn't know yet that Nanon and Ohm would become such a hit with the audience. They did throw in a powerpoint slide about BB trending and some of the rooftop confession, but clearly they hadn't anticipated what a hit BB would go on to become.
We're therefore likely to see way more of the two of them in 2023, hopefully as co-stars in their own series. I'd personally love to see them star against each other in a non-BL first, and then another BL later, just to mix it up a bit and let them showcase their skills playing against each other in different scenarios. It would be fun to see Ohm and Nanon play antagonistic roles.
I don't think Ohm would turn down the opportunity to act against Nanon whatever the genre, though I think Nanon wants to switch it up more and play different genres. He mentioned in a recent livestream that they've already done romcom (BB) and drama (Blacklist), so I think he would be more interested in something very different from their earlier work together.
I'm personally expecting the Vice Versa guest roles to be at least slightly fleshed out to make sure that the audience gets some romantically tinged OhmNanon stuff in 2022, but I guess we'll see what happens. It's Jimmy and Sea's series, after all, and I don't want them to be overshadowed.
Hey fellow Bad Buddy fans, I've been thinking about this for a couple of days...
Could we in the BB community maybe help Soon Vijarn (the BL series reaction and analysis channel with BB director Aof and his friends) get some more views for their reaction and recap videos, in particular for episode 12?
Context: Soon Vijarn had apparently booked both Ohm and Nanon for their final video, but chose to cancel to protect the boys from getting sick because they had so much work booked and the guys behind the channel didn't want to risk the two of them getting Covid.
Looking at the numbers for their final videos for episode 12 of Bad Buddy, they are currently at 161k for the reaction and 63k for the recap.
Compare those numbers to Jenny and Go's video where they were able to have both Ohm and Nanon come visit (they were initially supposed to join for episode 11, but Jenny got Covid so apparently they moved it up one week). That video is currently at 449k views!
So I was thinking that since Aof and his friends sacrificed at least 300k views in order to protect Ohm and Nanon's health and ability to work going forward (including all those livestreams and shows we've been enjoying), maybe we can help their numbers by watching and enjoying their reactions and commentary! Their recap videos in particular are great!
