ZYW is an amazing actor, one of my favorites. But I don't like the way he keeps whispering in this role as Huang…
Yeah ASMR Huang Yaoshi is not blowing me away either, it's just not the right type of energy. I much prefer the 2017 or 1983 version. Though I'm fine letting ZYW's interpretation play out, so long as it makes sense, even if different from previous versions.
Honorable, pure-hearted, sometimes loyal to a fault are qualities I can live with. It depends on whether his 'dumbness' is justified by his positive/heroic qualities or not. Dumb to a point of being a gullible, temperamental baby that hurts friends more than enemies is the version I can't live with.
If that's how dumb he is, then I fully support modifying his character. I'm not sitting through dozens of episodes rooting for a dumbass to be saved from his own mess.
After some more episodes, I can see their intent of adding some elements for certain scenes to make YK's actions…
Yeah agreed, they added some elements but left out others. I might be overly charitable as I still know the backstory that they've glossed over in this version. And they seem to be counting on audience knowing the story the way they fast forward to plot points without ample explanation.
I'm far less upset than after the first episode as I can at least see the intent and effort to address the frustrating and illogical points of the story--all the misunderstanding driven conflicts and noble idiocies.
Before it just looked like a medical case study in collective long Covid.
why does everyone expect Yang Kang to just turn around and murder the man he called his father for his whole life?…
Yeah I'm coming around a bit to their intent with YK and the story. There's a plausible version of YK that's not a complete psychopath. But you really have to highlight where he's coming from, his inner turmoil, his pride, poor treatment by some others after learning his identity, and just some bad luck events to make him the more sympathetic, derisible, but also tragic character.
It actually kind of make sense that all the Jianghu people judging him and coaxing him to give up his Jin noble identity has no appreciation or even concept of what it's like to grow up with YK's privilege. They are also colored by their bitter disdain for the Jin as Song loyalists, that in their mind choosing Song over Jin should be automatic. So they completely overlook Wanyan Honglie's fatherly treatment of YK or how someone who grew up Jin royalty may harbor many affections for the positives of Jin, something not easily erased overnight.
I like some of the new twists added in, or at least the idea, regardless of the execution. The scene with MN and YK hustling for money as street performers was nice. As if it wasn't humbling enough for YK to be essentially begging for money, then to be humiliated and threatened by a corrupt official must be a serious shock to someone so prideful.
I quite like the colors in this drama, they give the whole thing a more 'classic' vibe, in my opinion.I've started…
NGL the first episode looked like shit, especially since everyone was expecting a grassland scenery, not some hazy in-studio sandstorm. It was bad enough that they changed the filter overnight, and the subsequent episodes look better.
The 2017 version seems to be going for something more mystical and enchanting. I liked the look of the early episodes of the snowy scene, temple scene, and later Peach Blossom Island scenes. This version seems to be going for a grittier style, which is fine as well.
I’m not sure if I can subject myself to the sheer stupidly and annoyance of Yang Kang and naivety of Nian Ci…
After some more episodes, I can see their intent of adding some elements for certain scenes to make YK's actions and MN's affection for him more believable. Though the execution is much hampered by the awful intro and rushed storytelling. They are not giving enough scenes and buildup to show YK's inner conflict, events that yoyo him between his YK and WYK allegiance, or injecting the scenes with enough emotional impact.
YK is not well written or well acted here. He is just dumbed down to an outright villain. In general all the young…
Yeah, got me thinking about the LOCH characters and story in the post. There's way more to the original story that's unfortunately completely demolished in this version. But I also suspect there are inherent flaws to the original story which produces so many great, but flawed adaptations.
If you were frustrated enough by previous versions, this one is so much worse.
The only way to stomach Nianci and YK relationship is for there to be some reason for her to be repeatedly interested in a guy that killed her father, tries to kill her friends, and keeps betraying her trust. In the original story, YK does many bad things, but you can kind of see a prideful, flawed individual that was faced with difficult circumstances and ultimately chose the wrong path.
You still see shades of that in 2017 where he loves the privilege, he has few scruples, but at least loves his Mom and has genuine moments of reflection and wanting to become good.
He was overtly sadistic in the first EP here, which means Nianci should have no reason to be attracted in the first place.

You might as well just watch the 2017 version at this point. It actually looks better visually despite being 7 years older. And while it has flaws and frustrating plot elements, the first half is compelling enough that it might carry you over issues in the second half.
This version is just irredeemable as they've detonated the entire foundation of the story in just the first episodes. Wouldn't surprise me if this go down as one of the worst adaptations.
I'm still naively hoping that the other side stories will be at least passable.

Yeah his first appearance and interaction with Mu Nianci was complete WTF, even more so than the Guo Jing Huang Rong meeting. The strength of LOCH are the tragedy and heroism of its characters and the grandeur of its scale and themes. These positives carry the show over some visible plot issues.
This version brilliantly destroys all that's good about the show so that not only do the plot holes become more glaring, nothing else makes much sense. And it's not like they were being creative and rewrote the plot. They give you the same plot points and outcomes, just without the characterization to justify the plot logic or why the audience should care.
This was just based on EP1, but things seem to have gotten worse from there. It's so disgraceful to an iconic tale that I can't even bring myself to hate-watch it.
do you mind summarizing for me whats the smuggling deal with bei qi is? i feel like even 25 eps is too much for…
What the story has revealed in S1 is that despite the ostensible hostilities between the two countries, the 2nd Prince and Grand Princess was involved in smuggling/trade operation of goods to Bei Qi. Not certain whether the trade was prohibited, hence smuggling, or trade allowed but they were keeping profits for themselves.
Essentially 2nd Prince and Grand Princess were doing shady dealings to amass illicit wealth and power.
most big cdramas get downrated by antis in DB.. unfortunately Douban not reliable as it used to be even s1 is…
Yeah JoL is really popular, yet also strangely underrated on Douban. Even by Douban's tougher standards, both shows should be at least +1.0 higher. It completely outclasses similar shows rated in the 7 and 8 range.

Also the Yang Tiexien (Yang Kang's real dad) is the Pickpocket Freak from 2017
