Yeah if you are not watching for nostalgia, the anything before the 2000s will seem really off. You should give the 2017 version a shot, it's better while still looking modern.

Yeah he didn't criticize the show in the presser, as that would be very unprofessional regardless of how bad the show is. But also absent was the typical enthusiasm or endorsement of the show/character in the presser.

So when combined with the Weibo comments, GWG's face, and the underwhelming quality of what's been shown so far, it would seem like he was not pleased with the filming process or show quality.

But social media accounts will tend to exaggerate things for clicks, as is usual.

Did the original novel have much story on younger East/West? Yiwei mentioned WKW's Ashes of Time version. But I thought that was pretty much all original story and somewhat contradicted the sinister character of OYF. While I appreciated WKW's imaginative twist, it would be so lazy for them to just re-adapt WKW.

No idea what they were thinking, maybe Huang Yi has stinky feet. And the Mom entrance also failed, as she seemed much more aloof and aristocratic than other versions, which destroys her character setup.

They needed to show YK to be an asshole, but at least slightly intrigued by Nianci, and her to have some reason to be into YK. 2024 just showed him to be an asshole.

Good: Better/Less frustrating Guo Jing, 7 Idiots of Jiangnan, tries to fix some terrible miscommunication driven plots. Aside from EP1, the fight choreography is not bad, arguably one of the better ones.

Debatable: more realistic, serious acting, grittier visuals, speeding or skipping through some frustrating parts, Huang Rong (sometimes serviceable, sometimes lackluster in portraying one of the most iconic and dynamic characters)

Bad: not capturing LOCH's expansive and heroic romanticism in visuals (2017); stories (rushing through the plot, not properly setting up key characters and moments); created new character and plot issues including Yang Kang, OYK (awful incoherent setup for his falling in love with HR).

I liked the 2017 version up to the whole ship/island (which is a problem segment in multiple versions) a lot better.

The 1983 version is the OG trailblazing classic that deserves all the praise. It's great for nostalgia and killer OST. But if we are to judge it by modern standards it also has many issues, even ignoring the visuals, CGI, and makeup/styling.

I remember actually preferring her with GJ initially when I watched the 83 version as a kid. But it could have been because I thought the beads and shit made her look prettier.

Yeah old Huang Yaoshi is pretty much the outsized figure in every scene he's in. Zhou Yiwei seems to be going for some unfathomable, calculating, mature adult thing, but he's often blending into the background.

Yeah ASMR Huang Yaoshi is not blowing me away either, it's just not the right type of energy. I much prefer the 2017 or 1983 version. Though I'm fine letting ZYW's interpretation play out, so long as it makes sense, even if different from previous versions.

Honorable, pure-hearted, sometimes loyal to a fault are qualities I can live with. It depends on whether his 'dumbness' is justified by his positive/heroic qualities or not. Dumb to a point of being a gullible, temperamental baby that hurts friends more than enemies is the version I can't live with.

If that's how dumb he is, then I fully support modifying his character. I'm not sitting through dozens of episodes rooting for a dumbass to be saved from his own mess.

This show isn't about romance. Suitors get put in their place, shifus not so much.

Yeah agreed, they added some elements but left out others. I might be overly charitable as I still know the backstory that they've glossed over in this version. And they seem to be counting on audience knowing the story the way they fast forward to plot points without ample explanation.

I'm far less upset than after the first episode as I can at least see the intent and effort to address the frustrating and illogical points of the story--all the misunderstanding driven conflicts and noble idiocies.

Before it just looked like a medical case study in collective long Covid.

Yeah I'm coming around a bit to their intent with YK and the story. There's a plausible version of YK that's not a complete psychopath. But you really have to highlight where he's coming from, his inner turmoil, his pride, poor treatment by some others after learning his identity, and just some bad luck events to make him the more sympathetic, derisible, but also tragic character.

It actually kind of make sense that all the Jianghu people judging him and coaxing him to give up his Jin noble identity has no appreciation or even concept of what it's like to grow up with YK's privilege. They are also colored by their bitter disdain for the Jin as Song loyalists, that in their mind choosing Song over Jin should be automatic. So they completely overlook Wanyan Honglie's fatherly treatment of YK or how someone who grew up Jin royalty may harbor many affections for the positives of Jin, something not easily erased overnight.

I like some of the new twists added in, or at least the idea, regardless of the execution. The scene with MN and YK hustling for money as street performers was nice. As if it wasn't humbling enough for YK to be essentially begging for money, then to be humiliated and threatened by a corrupt official must be a serious shock to someone so prideful.

I'm a simple man, make Guo Jing not a dumbass and I'll tag along for the ride, rough spots and all.

NGL the first episode looked like shit, especially since everyone was expecting a grassland scenery, not some hazy in-studio sandstorm. It was bad enough that they changed the filter overnight, and the subsequent episodes look better.

The 2017 version seems to be going for something more mystical and enchanting. I liked the look of the early episodes of the snowy scene, temple scene, and later Peach Blossom Island scenes. This version seems to be going for a grittier style, which is fine as well.

After some more episodes, I can see their intent of adding some elements for certain scenes to make YK's actions and MN's affection for him more believable. Though the execution is much hampered by the awful intro and rushed storytelling. They are not giving enough scenes and buildup to show YK's inner conflict, events that yoyo him between his YK and WYK allegiance, or injecting the scenes with enough emotional impact.

Yeah, got me thinking about the LOCH characters and story in the post. There's way more to the original story that's unfortunately completely demolished in this version. But I also suspect there are inherent flaws to the original story which produces so many great, but flawed adaptations.
