With POJ they relied on the visuals too much than the actual story. The ML couldn’t save it for me.

I got annoyed when I saw a BTS video where the makeup artist kept making sure the ML looks perfect and plastic. A little snot they puffed him up, during the kissing scene, they puffed him up, there’s no way that too puffing whole being serious on the plot didn’t affect his performance.

They’ll likely spend the whole time waiting for romantic payoffs that were never the priority, and in doing so, they’ll miss the real story, a narrative that deliberately swims against the current (as the title implies), resisting the usual trends and expectations instead of catering to them.

And it’s not like The story of Minglan.

It’s not that romance will be absent; but romance isn’t the main focus of this story. I think the show’s actual focus lies elsewhere, which makes it a difficult watch for viewers who expect love to drive everything.
