Confusing. This is description of a movie that didn´t air yet. I just read on chasingdramas.com that a 35 episode series with the same title, and the same subject, started airing june 7th. It should be finished by now. I plan to watch the series asap

where did you watch it?
YouTube. I watched in 2021the Mandarin version with good English subs, I think it was MZTV channel.

It's currently being subbed on Fresh Drama @ 3 episodes a day. I'm 7 episodes in and I'm completely hooked. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZZZLpfFwcBq-1HY8QADrQHeQN_0wYr65Small-town…
unfortunately it´s not anymore on this YT link of the Fresh Drama channel.

China straight up haters, depriving us of phenomenal entertainment over some bs scandals. If they didn't kill,…
Tax issues should be a matter between the rightly or falsely accused entertainer and the tax authorities. It does seem like much ado about nothing. If the accusation is proven correct after thorough research, the debts will be paid back, with interest and a penalty. Who cares? Maybe, in China´s political system and Chinese culture tax evasion is equal to, or worse than a serious crime, because the accused ´steals´ from the larger community by taxevasions.

In China, many very talented actors/actresses are involved in tax cases, why? Are there any scandals involving…
Like you I´m curious how this happens. I also wonder why someone who may have a debt for taxes should get canceled before (false) assumptions and accusations are properly researched and proven by the authorities. In the case of FBB I think she publicly apologized for her taxdebts, and paid the whole thing. However, she´s still canceled in mainland China. Since prolific artists hardly ever manage their own financial and tax administration I sincerely doubt whether the majority of these scandals is about conscious, intentional tax evasion of the artist. Lareina Song apparently was falsely accused. In the meantime, she was canceled and out of work for a couple of years I believe. On The Promise of Chang’an Jun 15, 2025
I just read a Reddit post claiming that MDL voters or reviewers are very young, most of them in their teens. I have no idea if that is true in anyway. However, I´m no teen, I´m in my xxxx-ies, way over 55. I voted 8 out of 10 for Promische of Chang´An. I watched it in 2021, not long after I ´discovered´ C-drama in 2020 through YT-algorithms. I started with historical Palace dramas, and PoCA was the 3rd ever C-drama I watched. Back then I didn´t know what Chinese actors were famous or wellknown, which drama supposedly was good, mediocre or bad, what were the tropes etc. Neither did I know if a Chinese film or drama was based on real history, fiction or a combination of the two. Since then I finished 90 C- and K-dramas, and 46 C- and K-films. Most of these are Chinese. I still like Promise of Chang´An, as I occasionally re-watch episodes. Recently I even upgraded my judgement from 7.5 to 8. Yes, I cried a lot, there was sadness. I didn´t mind, because all unfortunate, sad events are part of our life. Afterwards I ´discovered´ MDL, and appreciated the review and analysis by ChineseDramaFan. Especially the reference to Buddhist suffering and the interpretation of the title, gives a more layered review.

5 years later: It does not seem to be on Netflix anymore, at least in my area.
I found something on YT, but it seems a tv series, not a film.

Another old HK drama that used to be on the recently discontinued DC. It was a wonderful resource for old and rare series and films. Why not bring it back legally, the way it was, with an affordable subscription.

How we desperately miss DC, for watching old Chinese, HK, Taiwan dramas. The C-drama with this same title presented as a series (Hong Kong 1980) was on DC before it was discontinued (28 nov 2024). The one mentioned here seems to be a film (1983).

Sofar, to my knowledge, only with Chinese subtitles, still hoping for a possibility to watch with English subs.
