He was horrible to her as was the cousin. They at times tried to present both as sympathetic characters but there is this intense nature to the portrayal of status that runs through this show. Like the FL moms repeated referencing the MLs dad as trash (i suspect there is a bit lost in translation the word trash evokes character flaw vibes but it seems more like the Madam Fu is saying he is just low born) and that never being challenged. The cousin referencing to the Yangcheng that the bar girl is beneath him more than once the whole moth butterfly speech by the brother. It's like this is not in there just to create drama this is just reflective of and somewhat unapologetic of the culture. It's interesting in a way
