To be fair to him, he did very real kiss scenes in Glory of Tang and he fake kissed in Under the Power as well. I think One and Only was fine without them but if I remember correctly the kisses were a pretty prominent feature in the book so it would be a bit strange to not have them in this (but I am told there are).

I think most people who like the genre will watch both. I am very sure I will not watch Oath of Love at all bc I don't like this genre, I am only here bc I watched One and Only.

Ren Jialun is very popular - I wouldn't say he is an A-lister but close enough. I don't think anyone has a problem with the fact he is married. He does get some grief for taking on so many romantic roles even though he allegedly has a no kiss policy.

The line from Shanglin Fu that they keep quoting is pretty much about souls uniting in passion (yeah, way to go shifu, teach your student how to write erotic poems on the library wall), And there are many Wu poems quoted on the boat ride which are basically peasant/common people sex poems. So there was a lot of passion hanging around in the air it just didn't go further than that.

From memory I think Tencent is 130mm and iQiyi is 110mm paying subscribers. Total viewers are something like 500mm and 300mm respectively but those viewer nos only matter for advertising - iQ made something like 3 RMB/month non paying subscriber in advertising revenue in 2Q vs 14 RMB/month per paying subscriber.

Both Tencent and iQiyi gained paying subscribers (~5mm each) in 2Q, which surprised the market since they both raised prices late last year/early this year. Idk Youku bc they don't publish their paying subs. I think given the huge absolute size of the losses they can easily make the case to just charge more, esp since the fandom/idol bans are going to hurt the advertising sponsorships. They are both starting to recognise it is better to charge more rather than do the VVIP since its so controversial. They have cheaper pricing models for rural - like lower resolution and some limited ads but I think the free to watch model is going to go away soon.

Yeah I saw the states order and I asked the platforms about it and I just got roundabout answers that implied they may not have ended up charging or if they can't have VVIP they will have to raise prices. But idk what they did wrt Crime Crackdown fast track bc I was really behind due to work and forgot what was going on so I decided to drop it.

I also heard they didn't charge for the advanced viewing bc it may be controversial with regulators. So now IQ wants to raise prices (in China) another 25pct.
