Title The Journey of Legend Spoiler
What is Liu Suifeng's background? I have some guesses based on what has been shown currently (ep 11).1) He is…
I think its quite obvious he is a remnant of the Baihua sect that made the Marching pill and was annihilated by the jianghu righteous sects led by the Xiao family.

Just realized that the script writer is the same for Mysterious Lotus Casebook, which wasn’t too bad. Wonder…
She did a good job with MLC bc she more or less stuck with the novel. Here she had to write large original segments which imho were more miss than hit. And the novelist is just simply a much better writer with more elegant classic prose. Hers is very modern/vernacular. It’s an obvious writing mismatch I can tell right away who wrote which parts.

Isn't all this following the novel?
Well I don’t know but my guess is he is not too bothered about it as long as he gets royalties. People that age don’t care about this stuff so much anymore.

Isn't all this following the novel?
Yes he is alive but he is quite old now, probably can’t be bothered. His works have been adapted many times.

Isn't all this following the novel?
No I don’t think there are censorship issues with the novel - the politics were from Song dynasty - should be not controversial.

I think Julian plays someone's daddy. I think he was in ep 1...
Yes its written by Woon Swee Oan/ Wen Ruian. The Four is his most popular work. He also wrote Heroes (2022) that I think we watched together. He is Malaysian born, lives in HK.
I think at least watch until ep 8 or 9 then decide.

Isn't all this following the novel?
Exactly - They should have just followed the novel. Instead they tried to make it like a JOL with some comedy and transmigration and some modern elements. Its so awkwardly written if you know the original writer's writing style you will immediately know he didn't write that.

Isn't all this following the novel?
Not the beginning. This is based on a classic wuxia novel that should have been written in the 1970s or latest 1980s. There was no gaming and AI at the time. And that is also probably why no novel readers are popping up here - the book was written too long ago.

A word of warning though - I don't know how this ends but this writer's works is usually littered with tragic elements.

Yeah I really struggled at the start and I had really wanted to watch this bc I never got around to reading the book. While the original novel is not the writer's most popular work, it is considered his best one by wuxia critics. So I was horrified at the opening episodes and the completely unrecognisable and juvenile prose. I think the decision to make it more "modern" and comedic kind of like JOL is a mistake, compounded by using a really bad screenwriter that doesn't know how to integrate classic prose with modern. But by ep 8 it starts to resemble a classic wuxia heroes journey again so if that is what you are looking for, then you may like it better. I do think they will still have cringe moments and dialogue every time the darned AI and transmigration theme pops up but hopefully it won't be too often.
On The Journey of Legend Sep 14, 2025
From ep 8 onwards its becoming more clear that this is a wuxia written by Wen Ruian and not that dopey screenwriter. I guess she must be the original writer of all that transmigration and AI nonsense which didn't exist when the novel was written in the 1970s or 80s.

Great review. I’m mostly disappointed with the episode count. You can tell it was edited down so the pacing…
Tyvm - it is a shame indeed about the episode count. The IP is also just too extensive.

Title The Journey of Legend Spoiler
who is the main villain in this drama?li chrn zhou or crazy yan?or someone hidden that hasn't been introduced…
I could be wrong but I think the main villain is Beihuang. XQS's character journey should be to unite a divided jianghu to stand up against the foreign invaders. In that case, there should be no real main villain - just different sect heads with petty agendas and rivalries. The Beihuang army should the the Jin army and Daxi should be Song dynasty. This is obviously fictional so they used fake names for the kingdoms bc in real history Song fell to Jin.

Indeed - he has no comedic timing. But the script is also not witty/humorous enough. Not all on him.
Omg now the comment police requires us to check other people ‘s comments first before posting a comment. 😱😅You should go get a life instead of trying to tell other people what to watch or not watch or say. There is a great function on MDL called block. Please use it if you don’t like someone’s comments instead of wasting their time trying to censor them.

I am afraid that is simply not the definition of an opinion. Not to mention that I just started this and that was just about my first comment here. Some of us have a life and don’t camp here to repeat the same comments ad nauseam.

I feel like I’m missing something. This drama is getting all kinds of high numbers in China in terms of market…
I also found it a struggle at the start. The screenwriter is no good the dialogue is insipid and the rapport between the friends is just not there. Those actors are just too newbie and don’t make an impression. It gets better when Feng Lang shows up.

Indeed everyone’s sense of humor is different and we all have our own impressions of a drama which we can share here that is what a comment section is for.

So beautiful fighting scenes!
He has gained a little bit of weight but it looks good on him. It also makes his fight scenes a bit more credible bc there is more power behind his moves. I haven't checked out the Chinese comments yet bc I just started I don't want to be spoiled.

I would call it bromance rather than BL and I personally love it but I wouldn't read more into it than that.
