The book has a very sad ending. Basically the ML commits suicide and the FL follows him after their child is born. And just about everyone else you care about in the drama dies. Its a beautiful tragedy but it has some of the best, most beautiful romantic scenes and lines I have watched.

The drama has an open ending that you can take as a happy ending. The epilogue has additional footage with scenes that hints that things don't stay well but that's it. Actually they stopped the drama there because the last 12 episodes got cut by the censors. This year the last 12 episodes got released (look for Royal Nirvana Special). It closes all the loose threads and it more closely follows the book ending. Some viewers still choose to interpret it as they go off into exile together. But most people (and I) think they both died, same as the novel.

To avoid a sad ending, you can just skip Royal Nirvana Special and accept the open ending in this version.

Oh.... but Jin Han is sooooo much more delicious as a baddie!!!

Yeah the issue is they have suddenly taken to dropping all the episodes at once. So people like me who can't just binge all at once get spoiled bc some people's sad idea of fun is plastering the ending all over the site in unmarked spoilers. I have written to iQiyi, Youku and Tencent asking them to refrain from dropping too many episodes at once in the future. Not that I think they will listen to me, it just makes me feel better.

We should ALL block spoiler spammers on sight! Then they can come and visit a "silent" thread since they will see nothing, nada, zero, zippo... Its my pet peeve I don't even want to come here because I DID NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING.

Li Si knew what she was signing up for but she wanted him on any terms. Sad. Han Derang was reluctant to marry her up to the very end. I think this kind of unselfish love is a huge burden on him as well because he can't return it. He wasn't even that into her before he met Yanyan. Its all a huge opportunity lost because if she hadn't waited for him for so long he felt obligated to marry her, they may both have found someone else to love. Just like Mingyi did. Although I did find Li Si to be likable and not an annoying SFL, I don't respect her.

Yeah its too bad they have to follow historical sequence because it would have been more exciting to build up to the end with Yansage's coup and not Xiyin's lame attempt.

I didn’t get hooked until after ep 3. Both leads were over acting. After that it clicked and their natural chemistry took over.

Mingyi underestimates her yet again to think she would mistreat his concubine and is surprised and ashamed by how magnanimous and tolerant she is. Han Derang on the other hand knows her far better, he knew she wouldn't be so petty as to poison his wife. At first I was angry at Yanyan for (again) forgiving him too easily (and he didn't just wound her pride, he broke her heart for not trusting him). But on the other hand, I think it is also the ultimate slap on the face - when the wife you stole doesn't really care that much that you fell in love with someone else. I also don't fault Mingyi for the concubine, just for not coming clean about it. Its the weakness in his character he is not upfront. Although Yanyan put up a good show all those years, her poker face slipped when she rushed to rescue Han Derang while she was pregnant. I think actions speak louder than words and that is when Mingyi realizes he can will never own her heart the way Han Derang does and he seeks solace in someone else's arms.

Finally got a chance to catch up on this over the weekend. IMHO episode 40 the conversation between Mingyi and Yanyan is one of the best scenes so far:

I must say that the whole Xiyin line has got shits for brains... from father to son one generation after another. At least Yansege had a plan that could have worked. Pathetic.
