I think peaceful handover of power by those who can't hold onto it is a strong message of this story. It is said to be directed at Taiwan.😅

I believe this part is not accurately portrayed. In recorded history Guo Rong passed the throne to his son and Zhao Kuangyin usurped it from the child emperor. But it was peaceful.

Its a treadmill drama for me.

After seeing One and Only, I would have rather not had this pairing for ML and FL.
Yups same here.

Yes, that is a good observation. And the actor they cast has a kind of snake-y weasel-ly untrustworthy face if you know what I mean. At first I thought it was Han Dong.

I have seen many suggestions that it was not as willing or peaceful as the drama portrays. Qian Chu was essentially forced to remain in the capital. He never returned to Hangzhou - they even only buried him in Luoyang. So a lot of whitewashing of what really happened. But this was funded by the Zheijiang local government to promote their province so I guess it is inevitable. I don't think there is money to make this kind of historical drama commercially these days.

The drama completely whitewashed Taizong emperor. He left a body count in his wake - Taizu emperor, two or three of his sons and even possibly Qian Hongchu.

So ep 47 explains why Hongchu cold shouldered Kuangyin from the time he ascended the throne:
He was silently rebuking him form usurping Guo Rong's throne. The three of them were good friends. While he understood that Guo Rong's son was too young to hold on to the throne in chaotic times, he still felt it was not right that Kuangyin took it from him. But when Kuangyin showed him the yellow flag/emperor robe, Hongchu immediately understood that it was with Guo Rong's blessing and sanction. I think though in history, it didn't go down quite like that so this seems a romanticised account.

Qian Hongchu is avoiding Zhao Kuanyin after he became emperor? ZKY wants Wuyue to surrender but cannot speak it…
Circling back to this, ep 47 further expands on another more personal reason why Hongchu gave Kuangyin the cold shoulder. He thought Kuangyin usurped Guo Rong/Cai Rong's throne. Bc officially Guo Rong left the throne to his 7 year old son. But unofficially he urged Kuangyin to take it when he passed on the flag/yellow emperor robe to him. Hongchu immediately understood what happened when Kuangyin showed him the robe and his memorial to Guo Rong at the altar temple. I forgot the three of them were besties so of course to Hongchu it seemed wrong for Kuangyin to dispossess Guo Rong's son.

The uncle is an idiot. Colluding with a foreign power and enemy of your state is how you to get disinherited from the throne.

Yeah I agree, the plot is good but so many more interesting characters that deserve more focus. But it seems Zhejiang province funded this specifically to highlight Wuyue's place in history.

I think the NIF costumes accurately reflected the prosperity of the (fictional) regime and opulent palace setting.

The drama heavily fictionalized many minor historical figures including that of Li Yuanqing and Qian Weijun. Their roles in history (esp Li) bore almost no resemblance to how they are presented in the drama.

I don't like how this arc is playing out bc it seems to be building towards implying that Hongchu surrenders at least partially also bc his heir is unworthy and is unlikely to be able to hold onto Wuyue, like many failed rulers of that period. When in history there is no record of some Southern Tang spy successfully getting access to his heir and influencing him to this kind of disastrous outcome.

Indeed but I think at this point in history, all parties are pretty much financially and physically exhausted by the endless wars. I guess the final battles won't be much shock and awe but last man standing. I found it quite funny that even Hongchu who was mostly a bystander couldn't wait to shed his military responsibilities.
