Yes of course this was indeed the case but the litchi road turned it into an express courier service with cold chain.

For some historical trivia, Mo Boyong's book was probably inspired by Du Mu /杜牧's poem 过华清宫/A Passage to Huaqing Palace that critique Emperor Xuanzong's extravagance for Yang Guifei:

一骑红尘妃子笑,
无人知是荔枝来
A horse kicks up red dust—the concubine smiles,
No one knows it’s litchi coming all those miles.

That line is very famous for mocking how the couriers raced at breakneck speed just to bring litchi to Yang Guifei at Huaqing Palace and is one of the most often quoted in criticism of Yang Guifei's influence and Tang decadence.

I've noticed that, too, yesterday (haven't seen Northward). And she will surprise you even more when you see ep…
For the whole first episode, I honestly thought she was a little boy in Northward.

Yes the title "Litchi Road" actually refers to the evolution of the ancient postal system in China, which originated to satisfy one decadent woman's cravings for litchi/lychee.

Love it - think its hilarious but I am only on ep 3 so far. Despite the comedy, I think there are going to be some dark themes and lots of conspiracy.

The drama seems to possess the same vibrant (although less dark) thrill of The Longest Day in Chang'an alternated…
Litchis were Noble Consort Yang's favorite fruit. She was the beauty that destroyed the empire. This is one of her Marie Antoinette moments - insisting fresh litchis be brought to her thousands of miles in hot summer. This story mocks everything that was amiss with the Tang dynasty towards the end of Xuanzong's reign. Its too early to say for sure, but I think the Right Chancellor should be Yang Guifei's cousin, who dominated the court until the An Lushan rebellion.

Although I really didn't want it, "The Untamed" missed me too 🥲
I thought I would like it also, esp considering the novel's popularity.

She liked S1 she thought it captured the essence of that part of the story but she hasn't had time to start S2 yet.

It seems to me there is a lot of new arcs that were opened that is unnecessary if they don't make more seasons…
Ah ok. I guess the Chinese version is still a work in progress then.

He is a Central Academy graduate - he may have gotten some proper training there. I think his Zichuan Xiu is his most complex role so far but I am curious to see what how his LLF confronts his heritage in S3 of STOTD. I think there are a few good reviews on Douban but I also read some articles online.

52 more episodes? Wow that’s a lot. Did they fix the cast yet?

No Canxing squarely won that round.
I think they didn’t make the most interesting parts of the story and this feels incomplete. I don’t care whether characters live or die as long as it’s worthwhile so I’d rather have the whole story. It’s a highly praised novel so it’s not like what was not told is not worth telling.

It was his final ploy and quite a desperate one. But with KOL in control of Yanzhou it is clear who Ning must be matched with even if she didn’t already love him. Of course Liufeng family will also come to the same idea.

I don’t know - it was so many years ago now! His fight scenes in it should be good.

No Canxing squarely won that round.
He destroyed any hope for alliance between DL and LMH and totally defanged the Council and made them his puppet but powerless under a newbie Ma Wei. He killed two birds with one stone. For now he remains the ultimate politician who remains on top with his divide and conquer strategy.
