The ending is not sad but somewhat open. FL started off fainting in the first episode after seeing the title of the novel her editor just emailed her. Probably because of exhaustion. In the last episode she wakes up and takes a closer look at the novel she received - and sees the story she had just experienced. She cries when seeing her loved one reading aloud the poem she wrote in the story. It definitely leaves room for a second season.
I think the most likely explanation is that the game-developer made a character (FL) for the emperor in the game and then he went to meet FL in the real world. A developer would have been able to both watch what happened in the game (and fall in love with FL) and create the character (game-world FL) - thereby giving both the game-characters and the real people a happy ending.
Why are so many people in comments talking incredulously about this drama and censors? I don't see anything particularly…
I guess the hot (by Chinese standard) scenes would not normally get past the censorship (due to a little nudity). But I'm European, so frankly, this isn't much to talk about.
Anyone else wondering what happened to the bride in the bridal chamber? Since the ceremony is finish isn't she his legal wife or is the ceremony lacking the nuptual wine? I'm not sure what the rules are.
