ah okay. so to answer to your question above. in the novel, during the economic crisis, his cousin was impacted, pushed by colleague and end up in a vegetative (not sure if this is the right word?). since jqx has cut off ties with his family, he took it upon himself to take care of his cousin family, thus taking on odd jobs. but he was working as a tutor in the novel. if the drama decided to stick to this story, well then this could be the reason why he is working in construction.

on another note. this drama somehow reminds me of TFF and how Sang Yan literally pursue and stalk WYF. Normal people will say why are you so hung up on wyf, she broke her promise, she ran away, etc etc. But when you really love someone, you like them for who they are.
