Well, yes, we work hard so we hope one day it will pay off. What we really want to do is make films people want to see for a living, but it's still a dream away. We've had some success at festivals, nevertheless it's difficult to find financial support for our projects. We've been rejected for gov support so many times. But we're not alone in this regard. Many filmmakers face the same probs. So we just fight on. There are times when I wish I had a safe gov job though, trust me, because I'm at the age where (financial) security is becoming more and more important to me.

LOL, re men. I'm pretty picky myself. I've known my bf for many years, that's why we're together because he's safe & comfortable. He knows me really well & understands me. I couldn't be bothered with dating a guy now. I hate dating & all the game playing & uncertainty that goes with it. I'm a pretty straightforward person - if we like each other then let's be together. I can't stand all the back & forth, one foot in, one foot out type of bullshit that most guys tend to be fond of in the dating phase of a relationship.

I'd really like to try and get involved with an Asian man too ... if I were single. :) I find the idea novel, but if I'm honest I don't know how we'll work. I mean the cultural differences are so vast. We'd both have to be fairly mature & dedicated to make it work. And not many men are those things, mature or dedicated to anything but themselves.

I see you gave it a 6. I gave it a 9 because I thought the story was fairly original (I mean I've never seen that storyline before) & the acting was pretty good I felt. It got my mind off work & made me laugh a lot. Having said that, the feel good feeling was diminished by that scene where he spits in her coffee. How disgusting! I couldn't believe he'd do something like that! That says a lot about the character's character, that he's a spiteful & vindictive person. I really hate men with such traits.

In reference to the male lead when you say he's a pervert what exactly do you mean? Personally, I like alpha heroes, but they should only be tough on the outside. I like when they're sweet & sensitive to the heroine, even after they break up. I hate jerks & for some reason I felt like the lead in PR was a jerk.

LOL, not the kind of film to watch with Mom. Probably not! LOL

You're welcome. I might make an appearance myself as I should be in London on business around that time.

I can't find any movies or dramas that fit my current mood. I'm looking at Smile, You in the meantime, until inspiration or divine intervention hits.

Asian cinema in general seem to have an issue with choosing the best option for endings. What they may perceive as open ended & philosophical is perhaps downright frustrating and or nonsensical for viewers! Maybe just for western viewers, tho, I don't know. lol

So it could very well be a cultural thing, yes. I think ambiguous endings are more suitable for movies ... because movie are/can be perceived as art. And art is subjective.

When it comes to series though the time investment & the emotional investment deserve an ending which doesn't leave viewers scratching their heads or feeling things were too rushed. Rushed endings, in particular, are way too notorious. Everything doesn't have be wrapped up nicely with a bow, but should be more than just 'okay'. That's my opinion, at least. I can accept a lot of things if it's logical and intelligent.

I've certainly learned to err on the side of pessimism & expect the worst when it comes to (Asian) endings. Not that that makes an ending like CC's any less devastating! LOL

What are you writing your thesis on? I thought you were Italian because of your nick. :)

Man, I hate those endings. I've seen open endings (in Western cinema) that have worked for me, but I still attest that Asian cinema in general are horrible at endings, most of the time. What they may perceive as open ended & philosophical is just downright frustrating and or nonsensical for viewers! Maybe just for western viewers, tho, I don't know. lol

But I guess with That Winter, because of the movie, at least you know the ending is coming, unlike CC where you hope against hope that things will turn out for the best.

I've certainly learned to err on the side of pessimism & expect the worst. Not that that makes an ending like in CC any less devastating! :)

Did you see Padam Padam? If you did what did you think of the ending there?

How was Petty Romance for you? Did you find it funny?

Yes, in 2010 a friend and I made the fateful decision to start a production company. We make infomercials for corporate clients (our main source of income besides gov funding) & short films. We're even in the process of developing our first feature. It's fun, but very hard work. Not the easiest business to make money in ... hence the reason I have to depend on my BF more than I'd like to. My job is simultaneously my main source of stress & my main source of joy. Ironic! Typical! :)

See what I mean when I say I never get what I want? I've always wanted to make films - it's one of my greatest passions, but of course things had to turn out this way. And it's the same trajectory for everything else in my life too. I'd kinda sorta get what I wish for, but the circumstances under which I get it is dreadful, difficult. I don't know if it's the same for everyone else, but nothing ever works the way I hope it would. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the opportunities I have had. Sometimes I just wish the journey was a little less strait.

As for men, I know the feeling. I have a man now. He wasn't my first choice, but he's lovely. Not perfect or ideal in any way, but I guess I'll keep him for the time being. :)

Hi Sumi, sorry for late reply. I haven't watched Pasta, no, but I might. Seems interesting enough. And that guy from Coffee Prince is in it. Not that I'm any big fan of him. He's just the only member of the cast that I know of. What did you finally settle on, if anything? Did you get to see any of the films I rec'ed? He, the Coffee Prince guy, is actually the male lead in Petty Romance.

I don't mind being a working woman. I like it actually. I've always wanted to be able to earn my own money instead of having to depend on a man or family. But I never get what I want in life. The minute I decide I want something the universe conspires against me so that I don't get it. At the moment I'm self-sufficient enough in my own business, but I'm heavily subsidized by my BF's income.

Seems only when I least expect something or don't want something, that's when fortune falls into my lap.

I see you're only 4 eps out on A Man's Story, did it improve?
I made a mistake yesterday. The drama I investigated & ended up not adding because of a bad overall impression is not AMS, it's a drama called A Man Called God. Have you seen it?

LOL, no not confusing at all. I get it. Well, if you find any good gangster dramas with a nice romance be sure to let me know. Both are favourite genres of mine! :)

I just read through you comment again & realized I didn't answer all your questions re Lovers.

Regarding to what extent the gangster storyline takes up the plot.

Well, there are 3 plot lines that run parallel to each other in the show & they're all evenly paced: the romance between the leads, the gangsters and there's a storyline about corporate takeover and what not.

I was able to follow all 3 with rapt interest. But as I said, I love these genres so that's probably why. The good thing is that the 3 main storylines are not completely entwined so if certain parts are boring you you can probably skip them without losing out on other parts of the show. I don't know if that makes sense! Kinda writing this in a rush! :)

I'm the exact same way. How a show makes me feel at the end of it is important. Very important. And that feeling will weigh heavily on its rating.

That's how Lovers affected me. It was refreshing to see a mature, adult romance manifested on screen. I'm in my 30s so the teenage/young adult stuff with all the childish interactions & mooning don't really cut it for me. And for once the female lead didn't bug the daylights out of me. She was sweet, but most of all sensible.

One quick eg there's a moment when she's unemployed & the hero pulled some strings (or rather strong armed someone LOL) to get her a job. Most other heroines would have gotten mad & complained about him interfering, but this heroine said something that felt very authentic to me. She thanked him & said jobs are hard to come by these days so she's grateful for any help she could get. For me, it was such an adult, rational thing to say rather than trying to exert some false sense of independence. I've been in situations where I've struggled to find work & if someone made a referral on my behalf I'd be grateful. It was overall just a great show. I love it & will always love it. I can't guarantee it will be the same for you, and that's fine! We all have different tastes! :) All I can say is give it a go & see if it's your cup of tea.

The main genres in Lovers are crime/drama/a dash of action & romance, all of which I like. If you're not a big fan of these genres, you might not enjoy the show. I enjoyed the gangster storyline, it felt authentic to me & Lee Seo-jin is great in his role as the badass fearless leader of his crew. And yes, although the ending is a bit rushed, it's happy. Otherwise I wouldn't love it as much as I do! :)

What is your language? Italian?
Korean screenwriters just generally don't know how to write a satisfying ending. They almost always botch the endings of otherwise good dramas. It was still a fairly decent show, though.

What has you excited now, if anything?

We Caribbean folk are all mixed up anyway. LOL But that's the beauty of our society despite other problems. In the Caribbean people from all races/ethnicities/religions have been co-existing side by side for centuries without much strife. Not many countries can boast such a legacy.

My dad is British American too. He was born in the US, but his family came from England in the 40s & 50s. My great granddad is a Scotsman, my granddad an Englishman & my paternal grandma is mixed. I think she has roots in Africa & Germany with a dash Jewish. While my mom's side of the family have traced their heritage all the way back to the time of the Arawaks.

Anyway, I think it's lovely how drama brings us all together! :D

Stumbled across your mini review of Lovers on somebody's profile. How are you able to rate a drama you skipped most of & where you hated its music an 8? :)
