The only way a drama like this would work for me is if there was good banter/chemistry between the cast, unfortunately that's not ZLY's strong suit, she mainly excels at portraying strong will and fierceness but comes off as a bit too professional and cold. Saw the new trailer and there's a lot of cool fighting sequences and there was a big budget but itall seems to lack direction. I wont be watching this unless it comes recommended later by a friend

I guess people get the impression that she's an idol actress bcos she has a lot of star power and is multitalented, so they believe she has little love for the craft. Other actresses that mainly focus on getting new roles mostly do it cos they have little interest, need or talent for much else. Yang mi is a star not an "idol actress" bcos people don't like her enough to lie to themselves that they are enjoying trash bcos she's in it. Daylight ent. can wash away the idol status in exchange for high ratings and awards but it doesn't make a bad actress suddenly better. Even if Yang mi gets a role there it will be because she has the skill and talent not bcos she can attract the ratings. Though she's popularly hated and criticized few actresses in her age bracket can stand toe to toe with her in the profession and yet people try to put her and newer actresses in the same caliber which is silly and ridiculous. Yes I understand you have your own biases but stop trying to decieve yourself. For most dramas that like to portray an FL from a young age, it is quite obvious how the actress is going to portray it. Start out as cute and slowly revert back to your comfort zone as the story progresses. Safely pass the challenge of cuteness without getting eaten and show character development (throw in some touching emotional scenes for good effect) and you are a stellar actress, do the same thing again in your next role and you are phenomenal. But it's only with a wealth of experience that you can truly become versatile enough. I can always rely on Yang mi to put her true self aside and give true insight into the character she's playing. There are some actors I can watch just for the sake of their acting, like Lee young ae and I think I can safely add Yang mi to this category.

I remember years back reading a short story version of this and liking it. Sometime later I came across the movie the sorcerer and the white snake, I found the forbidden love story between a thousand year old snake and a mortal doctor really rich and fairytale like. I cried a lot when it was over and was still on the verge of tears for several days. So you can imagine my disappointment when I opened the first episode of this drama and saw an ML that didn't match the valiance that they claimed he possessed (I couldn't help seeing him as a very grumpy child) and an irritatingly fluffy FL as a lazy white snake looking for magical peaches to increase her cultivation. The other version that came out had a low episode count, lacked a lot of things that would have have made it richer and I was disappointed with the portrayal of green snake. I see a lot of wuxia/xianxia dramas in recent years trying to follow the trend of TMOPB's writing style which is not ideal. The main reason for TMOPB'S addictive nature was the passionate and realistic approach to romance and also the great cast. While I immensely enjoyed TMOPB, one of it is enough. If this production had geared it's resources towards better actors and writing with this story I can see it becoming a hit. Unfortunately that's not the case, I'll just hope it gets a remake that does the story justice.
Lol, you hit it on the head. I lost sleep over this one. But concerning the portrayal of Bai Qian as cold and aloof due to her grief (I believe you're talking from the book's perspective) I think that has more to do with the writing for the screen than acting. I haven't read the book, but I did notice Bai Qian was a little cold and aloof. I simply associated it with getting older and learning not to care about some things after living so long.

As they are all unpopular opinions there are a majority of people that are expected to disagree and most might take it the wrong way. It's important to emphasize so people can understand that they are supposed to simply agree or disagree and not misunderstand the intentions.
Take it from me, you didn't make a mistake by dropping this. Especially if it's bcos of the acting bcos there's very little character development for FL, I mean there are very emotional scenes from the FL actress but it kills the character if the actor has a very limited acting range. I would have said it's the way her character is written but no, I've seen her in other dramas and she's very limited. BTW The chemistry is ok and their interactions are a bit funny.
