He certainly lives a hard life but compared to others his privilages are also much more. He has respect, power, and the ability to do what he wants. The downside of not being with someone you choose and love was a thing for a majority of the population in the ancient times.
He could give it all up and leave his family but he wont because he feels responsible for them and it would tarnish his name. To me the FL is more pitiful

The honest truth is that he looked down on her family once being slaves he being of nobility. TBH he is 100 times better in the drama than in the book. In the book he beats her multiple times and chokes her to near death and humiliates her repeatedly.
Her anger towards him in both versions is justified.

Yeah it looked like the Male members of the Shen family knew. But the ML suggested putting the Shens in on the deal with the Zhaos to help them out but the Dad advised the grandpa against it.

I dont think you can "let" a family get annihilated. It sounds like they just didn't give them a heads up or plead for them to avoid being implicated but they were going to be killed regardless.

Ive never read Cry, Better yet Beg, but I just finished reading the source material for this drama and Imagine they might have a similar plot. They should consider categorizing it as Horror.
