We don't see victims cutting ties a lot in K-dramas. I did read posts by Korean fans who were analyzing Pio's…
Yes, Pio's situation is realistic, I'm not calling this into question, on the contrary. And indeed, cutting ties with your abusive family is complex and hard and is also still negatively perceived even in a western context .

Where I'm from, it’s still rare to make this choice, but less and less rare and not to the point where it won’t even be considered even if people decide not to. That’s a theme that is adressed and discussed in society when we talk about abusive families, whether people perceive it negatively or not, and the perception of people who made this choice considerably evolved in the last decades.

What I'm curious about is : how it is in Korea where, indeed, family piety is important? Is it completely taboo and unthinkable ?

Cuz it’s not adressed in k-drama. Characters abused by their family don’t even think about considering it (but for example, women abused by their husbands do, like for example in the K-drama "Marry my husband").

So I wonder how it is in korean society in real life. Do people talk about this ? Is it a choice that is socially accepted ? If not, is it evolving ?

I've seen a lot of drama in which people in abusive family forgive their abusers or just keep seeing them, even with a distance, in the end, but I don’t remember watching one in which the character just cut ties with said family. The ones who do are villains who abandon their family not the abused ones. The abused characters in dramas often don’t even consider it, even when they consider killing themselves cuz they can’t bear it anymore.

I can see how important the respect of elders and blood ties are in asian families, but I wonder : is it totally taboo to cut ties with your abusive family in Korea ?

(In this case, Pio loves his family and suffer from a years long depression so even in a western context, he may not have considered it even if he always thought about killing himself but still I'm genuisly curious if it's only that...)

While I think this story is not bad, the actors top notch, the visual and OST beautiful, I felt that the 1st ep's vibe and the rest were very different. The 1st ep gave the impression the drama was going to be fantastic, mysterious, poetic and romantic, and I was really on board for it, but the fantastic-mysterious-poetic aspect totally disappear after that and it's not that romantic either. It became the ordinary historical kind of drama, but very well done, and I was a little disappointed by that...

Shou Gu, Song Mo and Ji Yong are great and interesting characters, the chemistry of the main leads is good and their relationship felt natural and mature but the pace of the drama was very slow for me.

Overall, it’s good but not what I was expecting...

I'm not saying it's necessarily BL but I clearly don’t think you search for someone this much across the world…
Still all over the place... I did respond to your comments, when it made sence , but you mostly didn’t respond to mine.

You just keep repeating that : "Some directors and writers censor genuine chemistry or erase explicit subplots (such as BL elements) to maintain control. As a result, character motivations shift. Some directors and writers censor genuine chemistry or erase explicit subplots (such as BL elements) to maintain control. As a result, character motivations shift".

But all that stuff you keep repeating doesn’t particularly support your analysis that what drove Pio is only a sence of responsability and that Pio and Jeongyo don’t have any bond (when their bond is litteraly what's the drama is about), you have 0 argument to back this up. Do you think repeating that make it more relevant ?

And again, Shin Yi Won, the screenwriter of this drama and creator of these characters, said notably that Pio and Jeongyo connection is directly inspired by Catherine and Heathcliff connection in "Wuthering Heights" and described their bond as unbreakable, and destined and as "a wolf who loves a sheep". Talk about knowledge, do you know what "Wuthering heights" is about and what was Catherine and Heathcliff relationship? That makes your analysis even less relevant. You want me to write in capital letters too to understand it better ?

And BL is Boys love, love in a romantic way. Never said you dragged me into this conversation either but into your obsession with BL, since obviously people interpreting this drama as such is bothering you a lot, when they actually have good reasons to.

You really have some serious comprehension issues, on top of your weird obsession with BL. Before pointing the alleged lack of intellect, critical thinking or dicernment of others, you should seriously worry about yourself...

Now, I said all I have to say, arguing with a wall is pointless so I'm done as well.

while I am still reveling after that finale - there's something I want to say...it made me laugh a bit. Why did…
😅 I'm ashamed to say I wouldn’t know how to "image search it", I would have done the same.

I mean, I know from an image on internet but not from a postcard...or maybe you mean, take a photo of the postcard and then image search it on Google after ?

I'm not saying it's necessarily BL but I clearly don’t think you search for someone this much across the world…
Oh man, you are delusional. You think you know more and better than the actual creator of these characters ?

I'm not forcing a narrative here, you are, their bond you claim does not exist, is litteraly the heart of this drama, what did you watch exactly ?

What is up to the interpretation of the audience is how you can qualify such a bond, not whether it exists or not. Stick to what the show delivers is exactly what I'm saying (and btw, in the interview you're talking about Pio also lied and he apologized about it later to Jeongyo so you think what he said there to strangers is reliable enough to base your analysis about their bond on it? And he also said he ordered the abduction of Jeongyo btw, I could go on about how reliable what Pio says is...).

Guilt and responsability can be powerful motivators yes and I'm not saying he doesn’t feel guilty (I precisely said he does in my 1st message) but by themselves they can’t stir such obsession, intensity, emotion and passion.

The love they feel for each others at least is undeniable, regardless of how you define this love. I'm talking about any kind of love not necessarily romantic love cuz that's not the only kind of love that exists, you know.

Pio's environment, experience and personality can be enough to explain his behaviour towards a total stranger but Jeongyo was not a stranger, he was someone with whom he had an history with and a bond, you can’t just make it as if it doesn’t exist just cuz you can't stand people interpreting it as romance.

And for the 3rd time already, I never said it is a BL drama, I don't know, and I don’t care if it is or not actually. I said I think they are soulmate who love each others. A soulmate can be a lover yes, but can be a friend as well, or a brother, a sister, a child, a parent....It’s not necessarily romantic is what I'm saying. I can’t define it more than that for sure personally, even if I do think there are hints in the drama that can make people interpret their relationship as romance and that their relationship is far from a simple friendship or fraternal bond. But whatever they are, their bond is beautiful without defining it.

You are the one obsessing about BL and romance since the beginning to the point of denying what this drama and its characters are about. That's a You problem, don't drag me into it.

I'm not saying it's necessarily BL but I clearly don’t think you search for someone this much across the world…
You're all over the place...Again, I'm not saying it is necessarily romantic between them, I can see you have a problem with that and I can’t even say myself that it is for sure, even if there are a lot if hints of romance between them. For me it goes way beyond main friends or main lovers, I see them as soulmates, but everybody has their own interpretation, that's not the point here.

Whether it's romantic or not, however you interpret their relashionship, friends, fraternal relationship, frienemies, lovers, soulmates or whatever, their deep bond is undeniable, that's the subject and the heart of this drama.

And even if what you say about SK entertainment industry, k-creators and context, social norms and toxic dynamics was true and about Pio's environment is correct, I don’t see how that could confirm that what motivated him and made him be, when Jeongyo was concerned, that intense, emotional, passionate and obsessive is only an "inespicable sence of responsability". You totally miss the most essential part of this drama and of what makes and drives the main characters.

And again, rectify what wrongs ? At this time, he didn’t know his mother was the culprit. Even if he had known at this time, that wouldn’t have been enough to qualify by an "inespicable sence of responsability" such an intense, emotional, passionate and obsessive behaviour. Feeling only responsible for someone or about something doesn’t stir this kind of emotions, feelings and actions.

Lastly, the screenwriter of this drama herself explained that Pio and Jeongyo relationship was directly inspired by the relationship of Catherine and Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights" and share an unbreakable and destined bond, an obsessive deeply passionnate and polarized connection she described as a "wolf who loved a sheep". That’s not a connection you can just ton down as an "inespicable sence of responsability".

I get it, you absolutely want this drama to be acknowledged as not-BL but try to forget your BL obsession for a minute...

They forgot the tag "tragedy"... It’s a good drama but very heavy, sad and draining. I wasn’t expecting it, I usually avoid this kind of drama for my peace of mind. I wish I went to the comment or review section first before watching it to prepare myself...

Pi O’s journey to the end of the world to find Jeong Yo wasn't driven by romantic love/BL, but by an inescapable…
I'm not saying it's necessarily BL but I clearly don’t think you search for someone this much across the world for several years, hallucinating them all the time, almost getting yourself killed in the process and feeling that guilty and breaking down to the point of not being able to go on in your life just cuz of an inescapable sence of responsability. He didn’t even know then his mother was the culprit.

Whatever you describe their relationship as, their bond was deep and unbreakable from the very beginning, they are each others refuge and mirror, someone no one else could replace. That’s what drove his journey.

Yea she was an extremely messed up person... honestly the grandfather made her turn like this .. if he gave them…
Yes he did but in my opinion, given her personality and how highly competitive the musical world is, there is no telling how she would have behaved. Maybe, she would’nt have gone that far but it’s hard to say...

I know.

But I've seen a lot of post saying the grandpa is the main villain and I mean yeah he was a horrible person but he didn’t abduct a kid, destroying his life, future and dreams, and his beautiful bond with his grandson, and making said grandson even more miserable in the process.

I don’t know about that... A lot of people grow up in abusive or unsupportive family and don’t turn out like this (here we have a good example with Pio who is kind and empathetic and wouldn’t do things like that even if his mental state is a mess).

The problem is that she has no empathy for others, never self-reflect and never take accountability for her own actions (while her own son feel guilty just for breathing) so whatever environment she was raised in, it can never turn out well, in my opinion, even if our environment influence us to some degree.

Just imagine Kang visiting the military to meet or surprise Young after the end of the drama .... 😳 it would…
Are they really friends in real life or was it to promote the drama (genuine question) ?

We know Pio is not one to vocalize his true feelings, so shaped by shame and silence in his familial world. But…
Yes !

And that song was a love letter sent across the world from Pio but rather than answering in the comments, JY send him a post card that litteraly exposed his exact location.

Pio would have never found him again without it.

Song Kang will always be Pio for me. But now that the drama is over, I'll confess that his lack of range dulled…
I actually thought he was phenomenal in this role and expressed so much with his eyes and attitude every time he appeared on screen, he was truly always fascinating and touching for me during the all drama, so I'm really suprised someone felt that way...

But I also see some saying the actress Yoon Se Ah was amazing and gave them goosebumps and others saying her acting was so bad it was painful to watch, when for me she was neither, so i guess it’s not that strange to feel so differently about someone's acting ability and range.

In my opinion it's overrated The chemistry between the actors was good but the plot wasn't that interesting
Same. Except that I didn’t feel much chemistry between the leads. The 2nd couple had more in my opinion but ended up completely forgotten.

I felt this drama was like a mix of all they thought would appeal to the audience. I had a feeling of having watched this story a thousand times but it was not very well executed here and it was often very predictable. The pace of the drama was bad, the lie storyline was stirred for way too long, the few same flashback were overrused, the main characters were sometimes incoherent and seemed to have fallen deeply in love at some point in the drama out of nowhere. Everything was very beautiful but felt superficial and uninspired. I ended up fast-forwarding most of the drama.

I had high expectations but it's a big disappointment for me.

The actors did a great job though.

The ending kind of reminds me of The Untamed. Queer-coded bromance dramas really typically only having tragic…
I haven’t finished watching Guardian yet. Tge main leads are a perfect pick but I struggle with the SFX and all (I did with the Untamed, which was actually the 1st c-drama I've watched, as well) and since I learned how bad the ending was. But I'm not dropping it, it's still worth it, I'll finish it one day.
