Watching this was a struggle. The FL kept doing whatever she wanted, including sending very mixed signals about her relationship with the ex-bf and kept punishing the ML for things he hadn’t done… waiting for him to apologise 🥴
I agree with this. The 2ML, while beautiful and noble, couldn't compare to the ML as a character. He just wasn't…
I understand your point of view, but you need to remember that you’re looking at this from the prism of modernity. In China, just a few decades until the events unfolding in the drama, most women wouldn’t have ever even got involved in anything outside their courtyard (with some exceptions). For a man of that time, he’s already much more progressive in his thinking.
If you want a comparison, take Mulan for example. She deceived a hole country to protect her loved ones, but people cheered her on. A man protecting his loved ones is just as understandable imo.

Given that lives were at stake, his need to protect her overrode all others. I can understand that. When you have somebody you love, protecting them can be an all-encompassing feeling. Parents often do with their kids for example.
On the second watch, it became more apparent that Wen Xi could be just as pushy as Xu Zhe Qing when she wanted to be. She kept trying to seduce him (sometimes by literally getting onto his lap) when she wanted to get something from him.
I know he was generally pushier than her, but some users commenting on this drama seem to be under the false impression that she was some kind of lamb. LOL she’s no lamb, she’s definitely a panther, she attacks when you least expect her to.
Clarity was added to that sentence to highlight that the character thinks clearly before taking action. That being…
Perhaps you should express yourself a bit differently then, ie: She acts boldly and decisively. Saying she doesn’t think of consequences is enabling irresponsibility.
“… can face problems with clarity without a second thought to the consequences.” - How is being irresponsible a good thing? Whenever you make a decision or take action, you must always think of consequences. Being bold can be a good trait, but only if you can face the consequences afterwards. Wth.
I’ve just taken a look at the reviews, and I’m honestly taken aback. Had we watched the same drama… most of the reviews do not resonate with me at all. Did some people not take any note whatsoever of the subtle themes behind the characters’ choices and their journeys? I’m also disappointed that people can’t read more between the lines. Oh well…
I have just finished watching it, and I’m so glad I did. Fantastic drama! I liked the concept, the timelines made sense and were easy to follow, the acting was great, and the OST superb. Very enjoyable. I must say I was surprised by BWS in this drama, in his other works he hadn’t made as lasting an impression as in this one.
