(There are a bunch of BTS and in one of them Wang YiBo is teasing him for being tired, and he says it's because of filming JoL, for which he had signed the contract before getting TU. ) And then there's a LOT of silliness about how much Wei WuXian has to say (that boy is a chatterbox LOL), in comparison with Lan WangJi (he's one of those I'm-a-statue-don't-talk-to-me types LOL.)
But yes, Joy of Life is a gem. Xiao Zhan's part comes in the last few episodes, so don't start it waiting for him to appear, his role is just support, though pretty important I'd say, considering how the season ends. Watch that series for Fan Xian (the MC), played by Zhang Ruo Yun. He (ZRY) is one of the gravitas actors (I'm calling them that because they seem to be the center of gravity for all things around them, in a very subtle way.) If ZRY is a focal point, XZ is more like mercury, flexible and changing and always shining.

For ZRY, something more recent that's been drawing a lot of praise is Sword Snow Stride (a wuxia), and I mean to watch that as soon as I have all the time I need for it (just because I randomly watched ONE scene where ZRY's character is drinking wine with the ghost of his friend - the ghost isn't there - and I'm haunted by it. That was an amazing scene.)
Dammit with the new Chinese rules that dramas shouldn't exceed 50 eps! And also, maybe it's a good thing, since getting two seasons of 49 eps each gives people time to flesh out the story as it should be... Though it might be a long wait in-between...

He kind of was, in the beginning, anyway. And a bit of a crybaby (with reasons to be.)
The story starts (or should have started, if they followed the original plot), with him a kid, powering up through teenage years and youth, So when they decided he was going to be a teen from the beginning and then start powering up, he had to be a bit silly and unaware, etc. And they did do a lot of childish things in their beginning at the academy (it wasn't just Tang San, mostly OuSiKe was the comic relief, but they played off each other).
He did grow out of it pretty fast - but that original setting also had to suffer because of it - because when he was all protective and brotherly toward Xiao Wu, it was very hard to change swiftly into lovers' mode (which was the weakest part of the story, IMHO, and not their fault, it was just too short a season to have time to develop that change.)
I haven't even watched the donghua, either, and I got that impression of siblings-to-lovers rush.
*sigh* I guess that's another second season we won't be seeing too soon...

I had just come from The Untamed, where his smile is blindingly everywhere (no complaints from me!), but it was such a shock to see how different he can be, and how much he goes into the character. (He has a support role in JoL, and there's still a lot of doubt if he'll reprise the role in the second season of that drama, but it's a good drama, based on a good novel, and the ML and the crew about him are also great! You should watch it, if you become interested in cdrama historicals that are more wuxia (or even just political) and not xianxia (fantasy-like).

Watch the DVD (original) version. The TV version episodes are shorter and the number of eps is longer (now it's 32) but it has the same content as the original (29 eps) version. The cut is different, there are some missing parts (mini-theatres at the end of some episodes) and the OP and ED songs too.

She's sticking with her heart-broken friend. She's not trying to keep them apart more (that drunk call aside, which is rather funny, all things considered), but to comfort her friend through the worst of it. She's a good girl in that way.
As a matter of fact, it did hit me how different the three of them are, while they were deciding to go out to the club. LZX is the cautious one, who would be a peace keeper, Yin Xi is the needy one, who requires constant reassurance, and SanSan is the bridge-burner (exhibit one: that guy who got to have a scuffle with Gu Xiao, who might've been Chris of a few eps back. I didn't read the novel, so I don't have to compare the story in the drama with it. It's a plus for new watchers, I think. I read a few comments that said that while the novel is sweet, there aren't a lot of happenings to make it a good (mid-length) drama. That's why there was even an earlier adaptation as just a movie, too.
With an adaptation, they can sometimes - and maybe this time too - take some liberties with the original story and characters. Sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worst. The thing to remember is that each is its own thing. What goes well for the novel might not translate well to the drama, or the other way around.
I find her family extremely lovable, and they clearly love each other, and their daughter too, very much. She doesn't need to be showered with affectionate words each minute of her life to be shown she's loved - her parents take her opinions into consideration in a life-or-death matter, she's trusted with helping her father in the hospital, while her father is (loudly) saying he wants more from her, who do you think bought her the cello? Because those things are pretty expensive, and her instrument isn't an old, hand-me-down one, or something she's had since she were a child. They're pretty normal as a family who care about each other, IMHO. What more is needed?
His family - well, this last ep finally had a picture of one of his baby nieces in it, so there might be more relatives, but so far his parents are the only ones, Gu Xiao aside. There isn't a lot of drama concerning his parents yet, if there'll ever be, so I'll wait and see if it happens...
It might be indeed a question of budget, since a larger cast might be more expensive, or it might be that the drama plot works better like this. I've read a lot of novels that were later adapted to TV or the big screen, and I can't name at least one that was not changed at least in some way. TOOL was adapted, and that's all there is to it.

It's like everybody keeps forgetting the one-child policy (which meant most families would only have the one child and put all their hopes and dreams and plans etc on them, and also place all the pressure for grandchildren on that one child they had). And at the beginning of the story, she used to have a curfew, she had never gone to a night club and didn't even have the kind of clothes one goes to a bar in, her first love interest was platonic and way back in highschool...
We didn't all grow up freely, left to experience and get more mature as soon as we were all out of our parents' "legal control". Mentally, she's still their little daughter. She's progressed SO much throughout the series - I mean, look where she's spending the night in episode 20, that would have been inconceivable at the beginning of episode 1. But it still takes time.
As for him, he's also been pretty cut off from the world - his parents are doctors, his environment is pretty sterile (sic!), his only friends are colleagues and one (precisely one) cousin, and his personality is only now allowed to stretch a bit, because he met ZhiXiao. They're growing together and it's beautiful to see.
But he said "let me carry you" and I instinctively yelled, NO, LAN ZHAN~! Sometimes I scare myself LOL.

First thing first: the reception guy is Cupid and nobody will convince me otherwise. Also, Dr. Gu, how well did you do research in advance?! OMG that pack of condoms and the heart of petals LOL. I would've panicked too if I were her.
Then again, his wolfish smile while he was teasing her that he was going to get to "it". That felt so natural. I bet XZ's a teaser in real life, it came way too easy to him to act it out.
And then he gave her the "right place, right time, right person" speech. Which I absolutely AGREE with. I mean, it's not like people don't have impulses and needs, but such a thing still should feel special, particularly for a girl - and a man - who are somewhat innocents yet.
That being said, hormones 0, rationality 1. I love seeing responsible people for once in a rom-com.
BTW, a nice sunrise is well, nice, but nothing beats a dramatic sunset. Just my opinion.
AND Yang Zi's cute bedhead OMG she can have such a NICE look, clean and sweet and innocent! I almost fell for her too. She's way too precious. And that with the big bad wolf in her bed too LOL.

Actually, if they're officially together (it's not an one-sided love), I'd confront him/her myself and have a talking-to before telling my friend, if I ever do. Sometimes it's simpler to let them keep the rosy glasses on, particularly if the crush is not actually doing anything sketchy but my friend might take it the wrong way and start being jealous for nothing. There are plenty of people who are insecure in their relationships, if there's no true need, then there's no harm to not inform them of anything that might not be to their help.
