Is huge worldbuilding with a lot of characters + there is a lot to tell like Naksu's past with family and Yul,…
Pacing needs to be consistent. Having 4 episodes at the start of a show that are very fast paced and still include all the things you just mentioned, which they did, then suddenly switching to an episode where the main lead literally just sits around for the whole episode and the rest of the characters do as well while discussing the current events, is not consistent pacing.
The show doesn’t need to have fast pacing compared to other historical dramas. You don’t need to compare it at all. It needs to have consistent pacing within itself. Having an episode like this is exactly how you lose viewers. People get bored really easily. And there’s plenty of other shows to watch.
Ugh the 5th episode fucking dragged. Tbh I don’t think I’ve ever watched a kdrama that DIDN’T have pacing issues. They’re all over the place with it. It’s like they don’t really understand how pacing works…
Oh I have a question if anyone ever reads this… are kdramas not allowed to show actual special effects make up for wounds/cuts/bruises? You know like real fucking wounds? Not the pathetic little scratches and red patches they always have?
I honestly always thought they did this on purpose because the actors can’t possibly not look perfect even if they just got slashed by a sword. But now I kinda think maybe it’s some weird broadcasting rule they have? Anyone know by chance?
It gets a bit weird you know? When someone who’s meant to be like a super strong warrior/hero type gets ‘seriously injured’ and they show the wound and it’s like the fucking scratch I got yesterday from a bed spring poking out of my mattress while I was sleeping… which didn’t even wake me up… but this strong ass warrior dude is like dying because of it XD

They like to use the bait and switch a lot in this show too. I mean it’s kinda an old show so I’ll forgive them for using such a predictable tactic for getting mains out of dangerous situations. But it has the effect of making your mastermind villain look like an idiot ‘coz the guy keeps falling for very obvious bait.
Watching this atm, only on like ep 8. It’s good, I like the older period dramas, they don’t shy away from having overly complicated and involved plots and being super dramatic.
Although there’s a hilarious scene with Cheong Jo at the Gisaeng house, she getting bullied and the older girls bully her by… making her do laundry.
I mean as a grown adult watching that is seriously funny, instead of hating the older girls I find myself not liking Cheong Jo, I mean fucking hell girl do the laundry and shut the fuck up. It’s fucking laundry!
My favourite thing about kdrama is that villains are real villains. You can fucking hate them real good. They have no rational or understandable reasons for doing what they do except wanting power, money and to be superior and play with weaker peoples lives. I mean sure I love me a cool, sexy villain that’s crazy and loves to just kill shit too, but it’s refreshing having one that just disgusts you all the way.
Although the one annoying thing in this drama is the way everyone acts when kang chi defends himself. I mean it’s kinda funny too. It’s like some guy will run at him with a sword, very obviously trying to kill him and Kaeng chi defends himself. And everyone’s like ‘OMG! He’s out of control! He’s trying to kill HUMANS!! Quickly kill him before he hurts anyone!” It’s actually pretty fucking funny. It’s becomes even funnier when you think about how many humans have just killed each other in this show so far XD Kang chi has killed exactly zero ppl so far, but still I mean his nails are long and he’s got green eyes man, that’s just fucked up, he def deserves to die.
This started out pretty good but got fucking messy in the end. You can tell writers had no idea how to actually explain young HaNi being there without getting too supernatural, but apparently someone told them that wasn’t allowed I guess? Because none of it makes any sense.
This of course doesn’t even matter because the show isn’t about why her young self is there. What the show is about, especially towards the end is reminding you that you have family that you really love and have lost at least one person close to you and by association of that knowledge it pulls at the heartstrings.
I found myself crying at the end a lot, not because I gave a fuck about HaNi or her family but because I care about mine. It’s a pretty cheap trick to use for a show that started out well. Considering the amount of characters and random side plots though I guess I don’t blame them for failing to actually make me care about the characters and resorting to laying the family drama/love on so thickly.
Could have been somewhat saved if the romance had actually been acknowledged and shown instead of just mildly insinuating that they’re together….
This show ruined the second lead couple. I really liked them at the start, way more than the main leads. Their relationship wasn’t built on lies and deception, and the reasons used to keep them apart were rational enough. And then they were ruined like literally right away.
If you wanted to have more tension between them then don’t let them become a couple until later on. But to have them start dating, and then having a fight like every time their on screen after that, is just disappointing. I don’t even want them to be a couple now.
And the grandfather was badly written. Characters should be consistent. Having him accept geum hi because Tae Moo loved her but then suddenly changing his mind with Ha Ri makes no sense, because he’s very specifically rejecting her because she’s an employee. Then suddenly wanting to send Tae Moo away for years when he was desperate for him to get married right away? His characters all over the place with that part. Which kinda ruined the last few episodes a bit.
Anyway, apart from that it was ok. Tbh I don’t think it’s as great as everyone is saying. I don’t really get why so many ppl think this show handled cliches and tropes amazingly well. I think it did the same thing with them as I’ve seen before in a number of other rom com dramas. I read some comments before watching it and was expecting it to be way better… but it was just… ok.
While he is most definitely a good actor, Tae In Ho unfortunately suffers from type casting, we can wish all we want but he will also most definitely never be a main or have the opportunity to play better characters. Consider also that the Korean film industry is so much more focussed on age and perfect appearance, I know that the western film industry isn’t much better, but it is still possible for actors who aren’t great looking, have been type cast before or are getting older to become highly successful leads as long as their acting ability is great.
Personally I haven’t seen this happen in Korean tv. I think I’ve seen like exactly one drama with a very old female lead and that’s because she got old while time travelling in the plot.
I’m rambling now, but my point is that he’s good at what he does and if I was in his position I’d just be happy to have so much work available all the time even if it is always supporting or villains ‘coz I’m still getting paid to do something I enjoy…
Guys a question, does the FL ever grow-out her hair in this drama?
Have you ever seen any tv show or movie that only has one season where a lead character suddenly grows their hair out? I mean how long are you thinking? How do you expect the actress to suddenly grow her hair while filming? If she’s wearing a wig to have the short hair and was to suddenly stop wearing it and have long hair how would the show explain it? Hair doesn’t grow that fast man… I’m so confused by this 😂 anyway I’m glad the hair grew on you and you enjoyed the show ^^
Ig its different tastes, for me, I think that the romance aspect helped a lot in character development and helping…
Omg yes you are so right XD! Literally every scene with Dr.Jang and Dr.Cha is just her sitting in his room with a bit of useless dialogue by her then the same 3 or 4 flashbacks that we’ve already seen like 5 times of them in the past, then one of them or both cry a bit…
I’m expecting to be skipping through boring/repetitive scenes the moment I start a new drama. It doesn’t even annoy me anymore it’s just normal.
Also, let’s be honest here, shoehorning romance into any genre isn’t just a kdrama thing, it happens in western shows and movies constantly as well. I think every director and writer out there could learn to stop it with the romance already, but apparently they all still seem to think their show/movie will have more mainstream appeal if they throw some useless romance around…
I like this show, but fuck me man the MC, Young Min he seems to just YELL all of his lines. Every single conversation, every bit of dialogue, he’s SCREAMING at least half of it. I honestly wonder if this was a creative choice made by Rain or by whoever directed this? Either way though it was a bad fucking choice. Every time he starts yelling it’s just completely useless, like why is he yelling? In every situation the yelling makes zero sense man. It’s literally his only personality trait. He yells a lot. I stg if he’d just stop yelling every line this show would be 50% better than it is.
And, it’s not a bad show I really do like it. I have no other complaints about it at all. But seriously I can’t take the yelling man it’s doing my head in.
So I read this manga ages ago and had been meaning to watch the drama just never got around to it.
The atmosphere in the manga is very different to what you get in the drama. The manga just feels a lot lighter while the drama has this heavy feeling. I don’t dislike it or anything and it’s actually the main difference between the two since this is almost a shot for shot adaption.
Honestly I can’t say wether I prefer one or the other they really are almost the same. The only things I can say is that Takezai Terunosuke does a really good fucking job of getting Rio’s character across. When I read the manga I imagined his way of speaking and his general behaviour so closely to the way he portrays it in this drama I really couldn’t take my eyes of him.
Izuka Kenta is pretty good in it too I think. Tbh I didn’t pay as much attention to his acting mostly because Haruhiko’s character is very… not bland so much as just average. While Rio has so much angst it’s hard not to get sucked in by him.
Only bad thing, this is a spoiler btw. The sex scene between Rio and Haruhiko at the end is skipped in the drama. Which I don’t get because they include other sex scenes. Just thought it was a weird choice to skip the main one between the main couple…?
This is probably the worst of the short form no coming out of Korea recently. I mean, it’s pretty bad. The acting is like so so Eui Zoo’s character is just annoying and he looks bad in this, his hair and outfits are just no >,< I really don’t like this. And showing of Eui Zoo’s chiseled af abs like every episode isn’t going to make me like it.
Everyone’s raving about light on me but honestly I didn’t think it was that good either. Sure it has enough run time to fit in a good plot yet it still managed to be so vague and wasted like 10 episodes on pretty much nothing. It’s kinda not really cute or romantic when the main lead suddenly changes his mind about who he likes in the space of a few episodes…
Man Jang Eui Soo was so good in this show, I just don’t get why everything else I see him in he’s never as good? I mean WYEL was good, it was sweet and the story was told in a way that had a lot of impact even though it was so short. And his acting in it was just perfect.
Yet everything else he’s in he seems to always be playing the same character? I don’t know. I really don’t like him in My Sweet Dear tbh and he was annoying in nobleman ryu and in next door witch ugh it’s just frustrating XD I don’t get it
XD that scene where shin woo is putting make up on tae kyung just made me laugh so hard coz they’ve already got SO MUCH make up on XD like I can literally see the layers of foundation and primer and lip gloss.
Shin woo’ lips are literally shining in this scene he’s wearing so much high shine gloss XD
Also did they run out of money to pay extras?? Coz there’s literally like 20 people in the audience for that prince contest… And it takes Tae Kyung like a whole minute to find Da On in that audience of 20 fucking people all standing slightly apart…
The production values on this show are so nice too man, it’s such a shame that the plot and script and acting is so below average…
This drama is so hard to watch man. All the characters are so awkward around each other. They don’t act like friends at all, they act like their acquaintances who have been forced to hang out with each other, but none of them actually like each other.
I don’t know if it’s the acting or just the dialogue that gives it this cringey atmosphere…
The scenes where Tae Kyung is staring at Da On just after he’s done something like catching him before he falls are so overdone and don’t look natural in any way. They look like 2 actors are trying very hard to act natural…
I don’t think this is a bad show. It has its charms definitely and sure the cast are all very cute. But it also has like, a lot, of problems that cause it to just be an ok kinda show, when it could have been a much better show. I mean there’s scenes in almost every episode where a bunch of the characters are sitting around and just scrolling through their phones. Like no fucking dialogue, nothing else really going on except like maybe Shin Woo is staring longingly at Tae Kyung while everyone else is fucking reading bl on their phones I’m guessing…
I just don’t get it XD who wrote the script for this?
Also, I will never understand why a genre of media (BL) that’s aimed specifically at women, continues to include these absolutely idiotic female characters that are only there to stop the two cute boys from being with each other?? Can anyone explain this to me?? This only happens in BL dramas. Go read any BL manga or watch an anime and the only characters that get in between the main leads will be another guy who’s caught feelings for the MC. Yet dramas just can’t imagine anyone but a female being the antagonist and spouting shit like ‘Ew your both guys that’s disgusting’
I mean am I the only one that’s offended by this?? Look I identify as NB but this still grosses me out so much I can’t deal with it. And the girl in this drama is just such a disgusting character. Do the people making these shows not realise that having a character like this, regardless of gender, just makes the show harder to watch and to like?? I know your meant to hate the antagonists in these dramas, but not to the point where I stop watching the whole show because I can’t deal with having to listen to some idiotic backwards cardboard cut out of a character….
How i wish for more people to see this masterpiece. Its really a shame that this isn't as famous as Cherry Magic
So because of your glowing review here I went and bought the first volume of this manga. Wanted to read it before watching this and after I read it and loved it I realised the next 3 volumes won’t be available until next year! ;~;
Now I’m just like dying.
I don’t know whether I should just watch the show and read the rest of the manga later, or if I should just be patient and wait…
I watched a trailer for the show and it looks so cute >,< it’s hard to control myself and not watch it…

Anyway, let me know if you know?
