Title Ashes of Love Spoiler
I was trying to find some reviews in the comment section but all I see is comparisons :(
Some people dropped this drama early on as it not their cup of tea and I'm sure many of them did not bother to give rating to the drama. My personal opinion is that this drama started well and funny. I liked the first part. But I did not care much when they moved to the human realm (it was not in the novel and indeed looked like they are taking on TMOPB) pleople like that part as it build up romance that did not exist in the novel, but I just did not care much for it. It looked like the secondary story of TMOPB, Yet, people complain that others compared them. It was the writer and production team decision to go that rout. They could have come up with their own unique idea but they did not. However, the main thing why I just have this huge reservation about this drama is the story itself. While it started fun and happy, we get to discover that JM actually lost everything due to XF family. She lost her mom who was killed by XF mother, then she lived her life inside a mirror with unfeeling pill, then she finds her dad to be killed due to conspiracy of XF mother, and we get to know that her mom was raped by both of XF and RY dad, XF mother tried to kill her many times etc etc. so, all this happens to this girl due to this guy family, but yet we should believe in a happy ending for them! That's for me the reason why I still can't give this drama a rating and even if I do it won't be 9 or 10. I understand that this drama is just for entertainment and I watched it because it belong to my favorite kind of dramas ( realms and gods) but the story of a girl just ignoring the misery and distractions of her family to be with the son of family responsible for that does not add up to me. I can't understand even within context of Chinese culture that give the most impotance to a person to be filial to the family. Even the drama itself contradicts that by making XF so filial to his mom and dad that he refuses to even talk about their evil deeds, yet JM just go with this guy with total disregard to her family. This was not just a simple family fued, it included a mother being raped and killed, a dad being killed, a girl who lose any possibility of having a living and loving family etc etc....

She ends up with XF. After stabbing him, she spills the unfeeling pill and feels very bad for what she done. She sacrifices a lot including the color in her eyes (she starts see things black and white after that) to revive him. Then, they have crazy many misunderstandings but end up together.

Yes, actually i felt sorry for JM the most. All her life was destroyed because of that family. She was fed the unfeeling pill and put inside the mirror because XF mother killed her mother. She never knew what family really is. Then, XF mother-the empress conspired to kills her father and tried to hunt her down and destroy her soul many times. And the emperor, the father of both RY and XF, raped her mother. They tried to make XF lovely and nice in the drama. But in the novel he was just an arrogant selfish guy who could not imagine a girl not into him and was definitely like his father. And RY got obsessed with her. I still have a hug moral issue with this drama. While I like dramas about realms and God and the scenery in such dramas, I still can't pass the fact that JM ended up with the son of her parents killer and mother rapist.

The engagement counted because she was the oldest daughter of the Water God. While the engagement was arranged, it was not forced on JM. She was at that time not in love with anybody and she agreed to marry RY in front of XF and other Gods of heavenly realm. We as viewers knew that RY manipulated JM to agree to the engagement. But the only information that XF knew is that JM agreed to marry his brother in front of everyone. But, he still went after her and slept with her. That's was the moral issue for many people. Also RY loved JM very much. The whole thing happened because she was loved by both brothers.
If XF gave up when he knew she was his brother fiancé, JM could have married RY but never would have really knew what love it. If RY gave up in JM, it would have led to her being killed by the empress. The empress would have done anything possible to kill JM and XF would not be able to do anything as the killer is his mother (the empress tried many times to kill JM and she was saved by RY many times)
In a way, in order for JM soul to be saved she has to sacrifice herself to prevent the death of innocents. That would have not happened had any of XF or RY had given up on their love for her early on. What I mean to say, it was meant to be this way for her to be saved. I personally had more troubles getting my head around the fact the JM in being with XF, she is actually with a guy whose dad raped her mother and whose mother killed both her parents. This is to me more troublesome than the idea of arranged marriage. Arranged marriage is still practiced up today in many communities but I can't think were it could be possible for a girl to marry a guy who's family is responsible for the destruction (killing and rap) of her family.
About the actors who played the character, I liked the 3 of them. But for me JM and RY were more emerged in their character than XF. He just seemed less emotionally invested in the character.

XF mother gives her powers to the SH - birds princess and they agree to kill JM dad to divide JM and XF. So, SH takes the form of XF and use the magic only XF and his mom could use to kill water god. JM askes XF about it and he tells her only he and his mother can do this magic. So in JM mind, one of them is the killer. RY sees through the nightmare beast what happened but predicted that it was SH and not XF who killed water god. He sends the dream to JM and it looked like XF is her father killer. In her wedding day to RY, XF interruptes the wedding wanting JM for himself and trying to stop RY from getting the thrown, he start using the same spell that killed JM father. JM feels so bad and that she has to do something for her family that was killed by XF and his family. So, she takes the knife her dad gave her and stapps XF. When he was dieing, he asked if she ever loved him. She says she never did. He soul starts disappearing, his dad decided to save his soul by sacrificing himself.

I feel really bad for Run Yu. But dude , kissing a sleeping girl is so not right.
They tried to make him a bit creepy in the drama. The novel was totally different. In the novel, JM spends a lot of time with RY and he makes her breakfast everyday. He even made a rainbow for her to find her way to his house (usually, a rainbow appears after rain, but he did that just for her to find her way to his house as she went to his house everyday). Also, the sleeping together seen in the novel with XF was totally different. It was actually XF who was creepy there. He was so angry because JM wanted to marry RY that he pushed her into the water trying to kill her then slept with her when she kinda knew nothing about what going on. She thought he was giving her lingli (divine power) It was wired.

From my observations, I think that younger people (teens and early youth) liked XF better. For younger people the love between a guy and a girl is above everything and they were so emerged in their romance. They saw XF as this perfect guy who do nothing wrong even when he went after his brother fiancé (JM was ok to be engaged to RY that time and she even signed her name on the emeperial decree of thier engagements and agreed to the engagement in front of XF, yet XF persuaded her with all force fully knowing she his brother fiancé and that she did not really like him at that time). But, people who liked him overlooked that claming they both liked each others. RY on the other hand has more colored personality. He has his own demons but has the goodness in him too. He is this gray character that people with more life experience sympathy with more. He represents what most people see in humans around them. People with more life experiences tend to be less judgmental than the idealistic younger ones and they see love differently, Hence, the liked RY more. But of course, there are exceptions too.
Even the writer herself was rooting for RY after he lost his love. She wrote another novel with both Night and phenix as the main guys fighting for the love of a girl. But, she gave the happy ending to night in her newer novel. It's not translated to English yet unfortunately. I hope it get translated as I like the humor in the writer writings and I read the newer novel was very funny.
Regarding the acting of both actors. I personally did not watch anything for them before. But the guy played RY was amazing actor. He was fully emotionally emerged in his character. The actor playing XF has very good acting technique but seemed less emerged with the character. Even when they cried. The actor playing RY looked so sincere kinda of reminded me of Yeha of ten miles of peach blossom. But, the actor playing XF kept his perfect facade.

We r actually a lot more similar than you think and my husband and urs have very similar taste too lol. it's like u discribed my husband with the description of urs. I like watching romantic dramas. So, I watch a lot of Korean and Chinese dramas. I rarely have trouble to engage with the main leads even if their story seems really impossible and illogical . I also liked this drama as i love dramas about Gods, different realms and immortals and I watched every bet of it. But some thought kept lingering in my mind about how it's impossible to find happiness out of the family fued both of the leads were involved in. If it was not about family, I would have been more engaged with them. But because family surpasses any other devotion to me, it was a bit difficult to fully engage with them for that reason. I just thought of clarifying my thought about it. Still, it was very well made drama and I liked it.

Yes, I get what you mean. I felt sorry for her in the last episode when she was the last person staying next to him. But, i thought it seems impossible for him to love her. He would have already, if there was that possibility. I read that the writer wrote another story with both RY and XF as the guys fighting for the love of a girl. But, she gave the happy ending for RY in the other novel. They say it's even funnier than this one (not sure how it's possible). It's not translated yet thought unfortinatly and it's called two ex-husbands on one stage. But I personally like to see a continuation for this one. Start from where it ended here and give us more about XF and JM life after marriage and give RY his hopeless impossible love story that turn true and happy.

I personally think that if RY had given up on JM early on, it would have been really very bad for JM. Had the empress stayed in power, she would have never allowed XF and JM to be together. She would have done anything possible to destroy JM soul and would have succeeded. For example, if RY did not protect JM in the mortal real, her soul would have been destroyed. XF wouldn't be able to do much as he was a human too. RY saved JM many times even when she was attacked by the empress. He took the blow instead of her. If XF mother killed JM, I don't think he would have gone against his mother. I see it as it was meant to be to get us to the the happy ending.

All that angst started because of one single action that was unwarranted - feeding the infant Jin Mi the Unfeeling…
What u said in ur post were the main reasons I could not fully get in this drama. I cannot see it at all that a girl will really forsake her family for her heart even if the family is dead. The fact that XF mother killed both of JM parents, was the main reason for her miserable life and being unable to live normally with a loving family, and the fact that her mother was raped by his dad make it for me unbelievable for them to be together. I know that people like to think that love is above all. But love has different forms and shapes. The highest for me is the one a person has for his family especially love of parents for their child and a child for his parents. I really couldn't fully invest in this drama due that. I had the same trouble with the novel too.
Even the most peaceful families will be shattered and dvasted by the killing of a parent and / or raping of a mother.

Did anyone notice subtle/major changes from the novel? Like in the novel, XF didnt believe JM until when she died…
I think the drama diverted very early on from the novel. In the novel, JM did not love XF until she spelled the unfeeling pill. She even did not feel anything when her dad died and killed XF out of feeling of guilt that she did not have feeling for her dad. My favorite part of the novel was how JM kinda played both brothers. She had a romance with both without her knowing so due to the unfeeling pill. I think have they dicided to make her flirt with both guys in the drama (just like in the novel). Her character will get a lot of back lash from Chinese viewers who don't like to see a main girl playing 2 guys. But, to me that was refreshing and different than the normal love story between a guy and a girl we get in all dramas. However, I think people would not have liked it so much has it followed the novel.
Also, it stood out to me really that the 3 main characters had flaws in the novel. People who read the novel without bias to a certain character could tell that each character is not perfect and made mistakes. The drama changed that a lot. We got more reganve theme with the main guy who is perfect and the other as villain. I, personally, did not care much for that as it make the novel lose its human elemts to me (like the lessons we learn from the novel). I'm still a fan of the novel. But, I was not really invested in the drama due to the changes made early on. I will continue watching as it's already almost done.

My heart is hurting for JM she doesn't deserve all the things that happened to her. I know this will be a happy…
She lost almost everything a person hold dear. She really had to endure so much:
1.she had to spend her life with unfeeling pill hidden in a mirror.
2. Her mom was rapped by the emperor
3. XF mother killed both her parents
4. She was never able to know what is it to be with a loving family.
5. She had to endure constant attacks by XF mother. if it was not for RY getting rid of the empress, the empress would not save any effort to kill JM and would have kept trying until successful. I don't think XF could have been able to protect her all her immortal life. The scheming empress would have found a way to kill her. Even in the mortal realm, if it was not for RY, yan yo and ra ra, JM would have her soul destroyed.
6. XF knew that his mom was implicated in killing water god, yet never told or communicated with JM about it. Had he told her, she would not have stabbed him. Even the worst act she was driven to (the stabbing) was still due to XF's family.
Most girls in her place will run away the opposite direction from both guys honestly.

You are right, in the novel she was like a stone and slept with XF to get "lingli" and she accepted RY and spent…
I agree with u. In the novel, she spends equal time with both RY and XF. She also said she is happy to be engaged to RY as he nice and calm guy unlike XF. She was involved romantically with both of them at the same time without her knowing so. Also, the novel was not about revenge as they turned it be. RY fought to become the emperor in order to protect himself and the people he loves. They totally changed him in the drama and I'm not quite happy with the changes. What was unique in the novel in the 3 way relationship between JM and both of RY and XF. They turned the drama into a normal love story with Revenge etc etc.. like million other Asian dramas out there.

Episode 50 made me realize how shitty everyone lives were in this show from the older generations to the current…
Now, I understand why JM mother gave her the unfeeling pill and wanted her to stay in the mirror for 10 thousand years. She predicted the misery coming. They would have been all better has the first meeting between her and XF did not take place. I'm bad to think so, but I do. At the end, I believe it's a cursed love to love the guy who's mother killed both of someone's parents. I liked the novel very much, but the drama since the started turned into the normal love - revenge story. Since the first several episodes, it looked that they changed everything that made the novel unique to me.
