Sooo....where is the emperor in all of this? His crown prince is running around doing his shenanigans, and the emperor is just conveniently off screen ill? Is there more to this, or is this a plot hole lol?

I've never read the novel, but my take on the drama version of SYS is that yes, in his youth in particular, he did some questionable, vicious things (like how he just killed people - sure, maybe they were "bad" people, but still, it's murder. Or when he set fire to his mother's house). Spirit spring and being the devil's child aside, his temperament and trajectory as a person were heading down a dangerous path until he meets MQG.
After her death, he genuinely tries to atone for his past actions. And so, when we meet him again, he's changed. Still has his issues and temper, as we saw through eps 8 till now, but he's long been on a different path.
