I’ve finally decided to dive into this drama, now that it's halfway, and the first 3 episodes have been really…
Welcome aboard! The first 8 are face-paced. Things do slow down in the middle, but I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Things are definitely picking up again as we head deep into the second half.
Nice back and forth between master-disciple roles. Before it was MQG helping SYS, then SYS helping XRR and protecting her. Now, I get the sense that XRR will help SYS.
If you like xianxia, I think this is a great one. Well-casted and directed with a pleasing production (music, color palette and costumes are not over-the-top). Story is mostly standard xianxia, but it has solid development in terms of characters and themes. With 40 eps, the middle part (ep10-20s) can feel a bit slower, but it's definitely picked up int he past few eps.
I'm all caught up. I'm really not liking SYS and MQG both making decisions and acting like they know better for…
It’s definitely something they both have to learn to move forward from especially in any meaningful relationship with other people. Although, I think there are some distinctions that are consistent with their characters. I think for MQG, she was used to helping the weaker ones and never thought to consult her disciple SYS. It’s one of the things that irks her sister MRW as well. For SYS, he’s operating from a complicated place mixed with guilt, unrequited love (so he thinks or at least he is unsure) and fear (of himself mostly I think). He wants to take sole responsibility for everything to a fault.
I don’t mind watching flawed characters and their turbulent path to growth, but I can understand that it is often not executed to everyone’s liking. Definitely an overused trope (the I’m going to do things or decide for you for your good trope), but I think it makes sense here.
I think with 40 eps, my general critique of c dramas (and in this drama), is that an adaptation of this story may not have needed to be this long or drawn out. Things could have been more succinct and still clear and fully developed in the past 12-14 episodes with half the amount of episodes.
Hope they become buddies - I'm really feeling their bromance energy even with the limited scenes between them so far.
